Steve Jobs Tells Mac Users to Turn to YouTube Instead of BluRay for HD Video

It’s a well known fact that Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO, responds to emails sent to him on occasion in a short, concise manner. In his most recent reply, Steve answers a user’s question about the inclusion of Blu-Ray drives in future macs, with his standard short response; telling the user,

“YouTube now supports HD video.”

The email, which was published on 9to5mac is interesting to anyone who has been following the Apple v. Google spat that has been making news for the first half of 2010 and may signal that while the feud makes for good press, it is really just two companies and two powerful men, Jobs and Schmidt, doing what they do best; generating buzz about their companies.

In truth, while I definitely understand the fact that many Mac users want Blu-Ray drives for playback and archival storage, when it comes to sharing most home movies with friends and family YouTube makes an incredible amount of sense. Not only can it be watched on practically any device these days, it also allows the recipients to watch the video on their own time. Unless you want to be looked at in the same light as Uncle Cary, “the guy with the vacation slides”, perhaps YouTube is the best way to share HD video clips with family and friends.

That’s not to say that Macs don’t need Blu-Ray drives and out of the box support. I think they do as it is one of the noticeable differences when you compare similarly spec’d and priced PC notebooks to the current line of MacBook Pros. In the end, I expect that Blu-Ray support will come to Macs when Jobs sees fit, even if that is farther away than Mac owners feel it should be. Until then, you may want to brush off that YouTube login.
