CompUSA is selling the Acer Aspire 3690-2970 notebook for just $299 today and tomorrow only. This pre-Black Friday special is marked down $280 from its original price.
CompUSA's configuration of the Acer Aspire features an Intel Celeron M Processor 520 1.6GHz processor, 512MB RAM, 80GB Hard Drive, 15.4-inch WXGA TFT Display, 8X DVD / 24X24X24 CD-RW Combo Drive and Windows Vista Home Basic. 
Apple updated its Macbook notebook series, which features Intel's Santa Rosa platform. The new MacBooks come with Intel GMA X3100 graphics and either a 2.0GHz or 2.2GHz processor. 
Wal-Mart is getting a jump start on the holidays, teasing customers with a $348 laptop that will be available this Friday. Those of you who've been waiting for Black Friday to get a cheap computer can get a jump start and score a decent notebook early. 
Western Digital announced it's now shipping its new WD Scorpio 320GB 2.5-inch SATA hard drives for notebook computers. That's a 70GB improvement over the 250GB Scorpio the company introduced earlier this year. 
Skype and Logitech are rolling out a new standard to offer smoother and clearer video chat. Using one of Logitech's high-end webcams, such as the QuickCam Pro for Notebooks, Logitech's latest software and Skype 3.6 for Windows yield VGA quality video conferencing at 30fps. 
Apple announced that it sold more than two million copies of Mac OS X Leopard since its Friday release. Leopard is the sixth major release of Mac OS X and is packed with more than 300 new features. 
Lenovo's going after U.S. consumers for the first time with the Lenovo Y410, a 14.1-inch widescreen notebook that's available through retailers like Office Depot and Staples. The Y410 starts at $699 and includeds Veriface (facial recognition security), Dolby Home Theater sound, an integrated sub-woofer and a media shuffle key. 
Sprint and Alcatel-Lucent are rolling out the SprintSecure Laptop Guardian, a PC Card that combines a 3G modem, linux computer and battery to provide comprehensive security. If a SpintSecure-equipped computer is lost or stolen it can be locked down remotely by an admin, who can also wipe the drive's contents if he wants. 
The Wall Street Journal's Walt Mossberg reviewed Leopard, Apple's latest operating system, and says its better than Vista. There are a handful of new features that he finds particularly useful, including Time Machine, an intuitive backup utility that 'just works.' 
Many of those hoping to get their hands on an OLPC XO laptop by Christmas wil have to wait. The One Laptop Per Child Foundation is having some last minute production bugs and production won't start until November 12. 
Staples will start selling Dell notebooks online and in its 1,400 stores in time for the holidays. The Dell Inspiron 1521 and Inspiron 1721 will be the first to hit Staple's shelves. Staples will also sell Dell desktops, printers and monitors starting November. 
Matt Kohut from Lenovo shot some pictures of a ruggedized Lenovo notebook that's only available in China. The rugged Lenovo notebook is designed to stand up to the elements and can operate under extreme conditions, but they don't look as polished as Panasonic's Toughbooks. 
HP announced it will integrate Sprint mobile broadband into several HP business notebooks PCs. The companies will jointly market HP business notebooks. Integrated Sprint EVDO Rev. A. will initially be available on the HP Compaq 2710p Tablet, 6510b, 6910p and the 8510 series. 
Ford is selling a limited edition pink Zune to support breast cancer awareness. The company will donate 100% of the $249 purchase price to Susan G Komen for the Cure. The pink Zune is a first generation 30GB model. It's not the latest tech, but it's for a great cause. 
Toshiba's relaunching the Satellite Pro line with the introduction of the A200 and A210. The Toshiba Tecra and Portege lines are the real deal for pros, but the Satellite Pro line is worth a look if you're on a tight budget. 
Apple announced that Mac OS X Leopard will go on sale Friday, October 26 at 6:00 p.m. Apple says Leopard is packed with more than 300 new features and introduces a brand new desktop with Stacks, a new way to easily access files from the Dock; a redesigned Finder that lets users quickly browse and share files between multiple Macs; Quick Look, a new way to instantly see files without opening an application; Spaces, an intuitive new feature used to create groups of applications and instantly switch between them; and Time Machine, an effortless way to automatically back up everything on a Mac. 
Hitachi announced today its developed the world’s smallest read-head technology for hard disk drives, which is expected to quadruple current storage capacity limits to one terabyte on a notebook hard drive. Researchers at Hitachi have successfully reduced recording heads to the 30-50 nanometer range, which is up to 2,000 times smaller than the width of an average human hair. 
Gateway's introduced two new notebooks in time for the holidays. The P-6301 and P-6822 are moderately priced 17-inch notebooks for home users. 
Sony's selling a pink notebook, pink Walkman and pink portable DVD player to support the Breast Cancer Research Foundation during National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Sony will donate $75 to the foundation for each pink VAIO VGN-CR290EAP it sells through the end of the month.
