HP has announced the new EliteBook 8460w, the company’s smallest and lightest mobile workstation, which replaces the HP EliteBook 8440w. The new HP EliteBook 8460w is a 14″ notebook which comes with the latest 2nd Generation Intel Core i family of processors and a new “FORGE” design which brings a new look, new enhancements and increased durability. HP also released two larger EliteBook mobile workstations today, the 15.6″ EliteBook 8560w and the 17.3″ HP EliteBook 8760w.
The EliteBook notebooks are mobile workstations, which means they have more power than your typical business notebook and are typically designed to withstand harsher environments. In most cases, these mobile workstations will be used by creative professionals and high demand users running applications that require the horsepower of a high end desktop in a portable form factor.
HP EliteBook 8460w Processor Options
The HP Elitebook 8460w adds the latest 2nd Generation processor options from Intel with Intel Core i7 and Intel Core i5 Sandy Bridge processors. These mobile processors are designed to deliver peak performance, with the ability to speed up when needed with TurboBoost 2.0, yet are mobile processors which are also designed to be battery friendly — well as battery friendly as a Core i7 processor can be.
The EliteBook 8460w supports up to 16GB RAM in two slots to provide supporting power to the system.
HP EliteBook 8460w Graphics Options
When it comes to graphics, the 8460w is no slouch. This 14″ workhorse is ready to tackle demanding graphical tasks with the included AMD FirePro M3900 GPU with 1GB of video RAM.
The EliteBook 8460w graphics support full Open GL and Direct X 11 as well as full ISV Certification to ensure reliability and support for working with 3D textures and demanding applications.
These notebooks also support AMD Eyefinity technology to provide an enhanced experience when connecting up to five additional monitors.

HP EliteBook 8460w Design
The EliteBook 8460w is a part of the new HP “FORGE” design concept which focuses on delivering a, “workstation specific industrial design language.”
This translates into a new look that includes a radial brushed gunmetal finish and a HP DisplaySafe frame which adds to the durability of the 8460w.
The Elitebook notebooks also gain orange accents and a backlit jewel logo on the display.
The hinges are all metal, and the 8460w retains a cast titanium alloy latch to keep the notebook securely closed while not in use.
HP EliteBook 8460w Features
The EliteBook 8640w has a collection of usability features which make it easier for users to get work done. First is the backlit keyboard which allows users to work in dim environments. Second is the new chemically strengthened glass trackpad provides a smooth mousing surface.
The 8460w also comes with SRS premium sound, a recent addition to business notebooks, that is complemented by stereo speakers.
If you need to gain access to your email, contacts or the web, you can boot into HP Quickweb in less time than it would take to boot into Windows for fast access to your important information.
HP EliteBook 8460w Display Options
The HP EliteBook 8460w comes with a 14″ anti-glare display with a 1366 x 768 resolution standard. There is a higher resolution upgrade available, which will bring a 1600 x 900 resolution to the same 14″ sized display.
HP EliteBook 8460w Durability
The EliteBook 8460w, and the rest of the new EliteBook w series, comes with numerous durability features including the MIL-STD 810G rated HP DuraCase which is designed to withstand drop, vibration, dust, altitude and high temps.
Additionally, the notebook has a durable magnesium alloy chassis, aircraft inspired construction and an anodized aluminum surface. The Display also has a latch, to keep the screen closed and protected during transit.
HP EliteBook 8460w Security
The EliteBook 8460w comes with numerous security features included an integrated fingerprint reader, Smartcard reader and a collection of security tools such as HP ProtectTools, HP Disk Sanatizer, Computrace Pro (with subscription) and HP Sparekey.
HP EliteBook 8460w Battery
The EliteBook 8460w has numerous battery options including a 9-cell 100WHr battery, 6-cell 62WHr battery, 6-cell 55WHr battery HP Long Life Battery, optional HP Long Life 73WHr battery and the optional Ultra Extended Life 100WHr notebook battery.
HP has not released the final battery run times for these numerous battery options.
HP EliteBook 8460w Size and Weight
The EliteBook 8460w is the lightest mobile workstation from HP, with a weight of 4.9 pounds without the optical drive and 5.22 pounds with the DVD ROM.
The 8460w is 1.25″ at the front x 13.31″ x 9.11″ in size.
While not as slim or light as some ultraportables, this is still a very portable package considering the power that is inside.
HP EliteBook 8460w Price and Availability
The HP EliteBook 8460w will be available in May, with a starting price of $1,299 from HP.
