HP Pavilion tx2000 Consumer Tablet Announced (video, specs)

| January 3, 2008 | 69 Comments

HP Pavilion tx2000HP’s announced the Pavilion tx2000, a significant upgrade to its consumer line of tablet PCs. The tx2000 features an active digitizer for improved hand-writing recognition compared to last year’s tx1000 series. Check out the following video of the new tx2000.

The Pavilion tx2000 is a full-featured convertible notebook, with a 12.1-inch display that rotates and folds flat. The display is touch sensitive, which is useful for controlling media applications while in tablet mode. A battery-less digitizer is included for writing and drawing on the screen. When the digitizer is placed near the display to write, the touch-screen functionaity is automatically disabled.

Like the tx1000 series, the tx2000 series is powered by AMD processors. Users will be abe to chose from several AMD Turion 64 X2 dual-core processors. Graphics are provided by an integrated NVIDIA GeForce Go 6150 graphics card that shares up to 128MB of RAM.

While the tx2000 is compact, it is not as slim as many other tablets on the market. The tx2000 will be available nicely equipped for about $1,500. HP’s Kevin Wentzel said they wouldn’t have been able to hit that price point without AMD.

HP will offer a 120GB hard drive in base models, but users will be able to opt for 160GB, 250GB and 320GB upgrades. The tx2000 weighs in at about 4.5 pounds, including an internal DVD burner.

Why oh why did they integrate the NVIDIA GeForce Go 6150 graphics card? For such a fantastic tablet it is sure let down by the graphics card.

I bought this nifty computer to use in the field for my landscaping work. It’s basic features work great, but the video card is a problem. I have display problems with a few programs. Most notable is CorelDraw X4. If I have more than 3 or 4 large pictures on the screen at once it starts locking up and can’t display properly. Would have been great, but they had to skimp…very frustrating.

Mine crashes often too, I think it has something to do with the drivers as well. Catalyst seems to malfunction. I’m really annoyed with this.. If anyone has found the solution, PLEASE post it! I’m quite desperate for a solution.

I got mine on the 29th of january. It stopped crashing after a BIOS update. You can get it via HP’s support website.

There’s a new problem though… Sometimes, when I use the WiFi toggle swith on the body of the body (usually when converted in tablet mode) the keyboard, volume control and the WiFi toggle switch stop working, with exception of the mousepad and it’s two buttons. If someone has a solution to this: PLEEAAASE!?

    • rob says:

I get this problem too and can not work out how to addreass it, have you had any luck

      • Tim says:

        Hey!

No I haven’t been able to solve it just yet, but the problem can be prevented by not putting the laptop in hibernation or shutting it down when it’s in tablet mode. When the keyboard and all freezes, you seem to be able to get it to work again by rebooting and playing around with putting it into tablet mode and putting it back into laptop mode. This seems to do it. I’m waiting for a special tech department of HP to contact me. Maybe they can solve it, because even though it can be prevented and solved temporarily, it will re-occur, and this annoys me. I’m not buying a €969 laptop for it not to work :S

        • Olga says:

I already tried it, i rebooted my note and stuffs, but the keyboard and the others buttons are still freeze =/

          • MBan says:

did you try taking the battery out, waiting a minute, then putting the battery back? it worked for me when my keyboard stopped working

It’s very very frustrating indeed! The blue screens and sudden crashing can be resolved by updating the BIOS firmware. This update is found on the HP website, the support people will be glad to help you. In Holland, where I live, there is even a chat service to help you. I was really satisfied with the results: My tx didn’t crash any more.

    Good luck!

BTW: Still haven’t found a solution for the Keyboard and other keys blocking when switching between tablet mode and normal mode.

My tx2500 is not crashing anymore into a BS, but he really don’t like my docking station… After a while the external keyboard n mouse won’t work anymore – mostly when only audio is playing. This is not really a crash, but a ‘normal’ shutdown is not possible after that.

In my opinion vista n his drivers aren’t working perfectly on this pc. I’m happy when W7 solves my problems – hopefully.

Finally: I really love my tablet – but there must be better pcs out there!

I thought the tx2000 was amazing, Then, I got the blue screen of death MANY time only a few months after purchasing it and became completely non-accessible … I am so disappointed. After many hours of being on the phone with tech support, I sent it in to be fixed… and lo and behold… it's back. SOOOO disappointed! But, I am relieved to know that I am not the only one w/ the BSOD.

So, with that said, I am tired of this and willing to try anything at this point.. How exactly do I get to the BIOS update?

I have had TX2000 for 17 months now. Never had any real issues that I don't have on other computers. Never crashed never blue screened. I use it every day at work with MS Onenote. Travel a bit and use it for everything eg: Music, TV, DVD player, Internet, email, Diary (Onenote). It does everything for me. Admitedly it is not the fastest machine but reliable for me.

  49. Amber says:

I have this computer. It is a piece of *edited*. Ive had it three years, had it fully replaced twice, had major problems with overheating and hard drive has gone down and replaced three seperate times as well. Last week, it got so hot, that the caseing of the laptop actually began to melt. This was a COMPLETE waste of money.

How do you captute video from a camcorder in the 2000TX? What kind of cable can you use when the camcorder uses a 1EEE1394 4-pin? Thanks

  51. Rob T says:

????? can you upgrade to Windows 7 ???? I din't find many support drivers at HP support for 7

  52. Josh_Smith says:

Yes. Most of the drivers are the same as Vista, You should be able to pull down the Touch and Wacom drivers from HP's site.

  53. Traveler says:

Pft.. It over heats so get a fan.

  54. Rlayson says:

Mine just died (2 year old). Searching the web, I found out that the TX2000 has problem with it getting too hot and in the process the built in NVDIA video card get de-soldered. There is a lot of tutorial how to fix it yourself because if you take it to HP they will just ask you to pay $500+ US to replace the whole motherboard. This is not Acceptible since this is a design flaw and they sould fix this for a minimum fee and not almost half the price of the original product.

  55. Diwayami says:

Tx200! Hell yeah, I’m almost done with it. Now it undergoes its 3rd year and several times coming in and out the costumer service. The staffs had even known me better than I knew them as the owner of the often-crashed laptop. My laptop had to change its motherboard because the overheat reason or whatsoever, thank god it’s still in the guaranteed period. The last time, just two/three weeks ago, my keyboard and fan got fixed for $200 i guess if it counted in USD.

What the hell happened with this thing?
