Cafe Hotspots Getting Too Hot For Notebooks

San Francisco cafes are becoming prime hunting grounds for laptop thiefs, who turn around and sell them for $200 or so on the streets. Last month a PowerBook user was stabbed in the chest while sipping a latte and spent six days in the hospital. Police say one downside of having so many hotspots in S.F. is that means more people are bringing expensive notebooks out in public. The trend is growing exponetntially- 18 so far this year, but only 18 in all of 2004. Our advice is that if a knife wielding, caffiene deprived crook wants your laptop give it to him.
It’s a good idea to protect your investment in your laptop with a recovery program. If your laptop goes missing, it will send a homing signal to Absolute Software, which works with police to recover it. We’re going to test this system out for ourselves and share the results in the coming weeks.
