Google Sponsoring Free WiFi on Virgin America Flights

Google announced today that it will sponsor WiFi on all Virgin America flights this holiday season. The promotion will run from November 10 through January 15.

Virgin America’s outfitted all of its planes with WiFi and in-flight entertainment systems on every seat.

I sat next to a Google marketing manager on a flight back in April who was planning Google’s ‘Day in the Cloud’ promotion. Richard Branson was sitting in front of us and it’s pretty clear that Virgin is committed to in-flight entertainment and computing.

In-flight WiFi costs about $10 per device per flight. Unfortunately, Virgin America has pretty limited routes, which means most holiday travelers won’t be able to take advantage of this offer.

I’m flying on Virgin America to New York later this week. While I do enjoy being able to get online, I sometimes miss being able to use the old ‘I’ll have to get back to you tomorrow…I’ve gotta jump on a plane’ excuse.
