Can India Build a $10 Notebook?

After rejecting the One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) proposal, India’s aiming to build one-million computers for $10 each. The OLPC $100 price tag was too high and India’s HRD ministry says they can already build laptops for $47, but will push the price down over the next two years. Design details are scarce for the time being, but the two designs by student at Vellore Institute of Technology and a researcher from Indian Institute of Science are based on a single board that is easy to assemble and service.

So far, the cost of one laptop, after factoring in labour charges, is coming to $47 but the ministry feels the price will come down dramatically considering the fact that the demand would be for one million laptops.
