Sony VAIO VPCF12AFM/H: $999 Core i3 Notebook with Antivirus Software

Best Buy has the Sony VAIO VPCF12AFM/H Intel Core i3 powered notebook available for the back to school season at $999. This Sony VAIO notebook is a Best Buy exclusive, which is part of the Next Class notebooks and compares to the Sony VAIO F Series notebooks which are available at numerous retailers.

The Sony VAIO VPCF12AFM/H features an Intel Core i3 Processor, a large 16.4-inch display, 4GB of RAM, 500GB hard drive and a Blu-Ray disc-drive, making it a premium notebook for students that are looking for premium features. Due to the large form factor, Sony was able to cram in a full numeric keypad, making entering numbers in Excel a snap.

This notebook is classified as a premium notebook because it utilizes one of the latest Intel processors as well as discrete graphics and a Blu-Ray drive. Additionally, it comes with plenty of RAM and hard drive space, which should be sufficient for most tasks

The Intel Core i3 processor, in cohorts with the NVIDIA GeForce 310M GPU will enable students to tackle pretty much any application. This includes general web surfing, email, working on homework in Word, Excel, and Powerpoint, modern gaming, and even photo and video editing. Plus it has the storage capacity to hold all your favorite photos, music, videos, and more.

Overall, those who purchase this notebook from Best Buy have given it a great rating. User complaints include dismal battery performance, and a useless pre-installed Best Buy software installer.

On the plus side, the notebook comes with a full version of Microsoft Office Home and Student 2010 pre-installed as well as 12 months of Webroot AntiVirus with Spy Sweeper 2010. Additionally, it has Bluetooth 2.1 for connecting all of your wireless peripherals, and a MOTION EYE webcam with microphone and face-tracking technology.

Though this premium notebook has the latest Intel processor, discrete graphics, and Blu-Ray drive, its specs come up a little short in comparison with similarly priced laptops. If you don’t care too much for the Blu-Ray drive and place more importance on performance, there are cheaper notebooks that would outperform the Sony VAIO VPCF12AFM/H.

For example, at $70 less, the Toshiba Satellite A665-S6070 offers a much faster Core i7 processor, an extra 140GB of hard drive space, and a premium Harmon/Kardon sound system; but it lacks a Blu-Ray drive.

Regardless, the Sony VAIO VPCF12AFM/H is a good fit for students looking for a notebook with premium features.
