The fastest notebook GPU to date was announced this morning by NVIDIA. According to NVIDIA, the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 480M GPU for notebooks offers many milestones including, “up to 5x more performance than any other GPU.”
The performance boosts come thanks to a dedicated Tessellation engine that takes advantage of new features in Direct X 11. This is one of the new features in Direct X 11 in which, according to evga.com, “you take a polygon and dice it into smaller pieces.” What this translates to in-game is more detail and better graphics. While a bit tricky to explain, the video below shows how tessellation will affect how you see games. It is particularly noticeable when you look at the examples starting after 1 minute.
Tessellation isn’t the only thing the GeForce GTX 480M has going for it. The powerful GPU has more than 3X the NVIDIA CUDA cores than previous notebook GPUs which allow for faster video transcoding and offers quick SD to HD movie upscaling.
Last but not least, the GeForce GTX 480M has, NVIDIA 3D VISION, NVIDIA PhysX technology and is a part of the NVIDIA Verde notebook driver family which just updated to Verde Release 256.
