YouTube Turns Five: 2 Billion Views Per Day

YouTube launched five years ago and is now serving two billion views per day.  YouTube, now owned by Google, put together a timeline of some of its most popular clips.

When YouTube first launched, it was primarily used by amateur videographers, bloggers and others sharing short video clips. YouTube now distributes high-definition videos made by everyone ranging from kids playing with their mobile phones to the largest video production companies in Hollywood.

The first video ever Me at the Zoo was uploaded YouTube co-founder Jawed Karim. The video has been viewed more than two million times. Lady Gaga’s Bad Romance has been viewed more than 200 million times.

Despite the fact that movie studios, music labels and other large companies aggressively promote their videos on YouTube, the most popular YouTube channel is run by a college student and his friends. Ryan Higa’s nigahiga channel has more than two million subscribers and nearly 75 million video views.
