HP Elitebook 2740p Tablet PC (video)

The Elitebook 2740p is HP’s latest convertible Tablet PC for business users. The 2740p is the first HP business tablet to come with a multi-touch display, making it easier to use when in slate mode. Another big change is that the 2740p will come with powerful Intel Core i5 and Core i7 processors.

The 2740p’s exterior is nearly identical to the 2730p, which was a relatively minor update to the 2710p. The industrial design was first introduced back in the spring of 2007. This Tablet PC can be used as a standard ultraportable notebook or can be converted into slate mode for note taking, drawing or reading. A thin extended battery can be attached to the base of the notebook. The Tablet PC, along with its extended battery, can be stowed in a docking station.

The HP Elitebook 2740p’s multi-touch display is a key upgrade. While the 2730p had an excellent “inking” experience, its lack of a touch-enabled display meant users had to use a pen to navigate and select items when in slate mode. The Wacom digitizer recognizes up to two fingers at a time. Common gestures such as zoom and rotate are recognized.

Previous HP business tablets used low-voltage (LV) or ultra-low-voltage (ULV) processors to maximize battery life. The 2740p is the first to come with Intel Core i5 and Core i7 processors. While the new processors are more powerful, they won’t be as energy efficient. The benefit is that the 2740p will be more than powerful enough for most business users. Some owners of PCs equiped with ULV and LV processors find them to slow for processor-intensive tasks.

There are a few other minor updates that some users will appreciate. The 2740p’s trackpad buttons are rubberized, making them more comfortable. The keyboard lamp can be opened and closed by pressing it rather than using a latch.

With a starting price of $1,599, the Elitebook 2740p will be available starting in April through HP’s business store and authorized resellers. Since it’s a business product, you won’t find the 2740p at major retailers such as Best Buy.

While the HP Elitebook 2740p is aimed at business users, it has a lot of features that students, artists and others will appreciate. It can last for up to 11 hours (less at full-brightness or with moderate/high usage) on a single charge with the extended battery life, which means it’ll get you through an entire day of school or work without plugging in. The 2740p has gorgeous matte (anti-glare) display that eliminates those annoying reflections you’ll find on glossy displays.
