Likely noobish, but an article about how best to adapt a laptop so a person with say a mobilty problem could best move away from a PC to a laptop.

For example, my Father in Law has tremors, most laptops have a touch type ‘mouse’ ‘cursor’ thing. Without spending alot of money, a USB mouse helped alot because the shaking isnt as problematic.

Article for USB mouse types, or ways to make the cursor more user friendly. Maybe which laptops are the easiest to use?

As far-fetched as it must sound to most of you, I am a brand new, first-time notebook owner. In the last couple of weeks, we set up a wireless router for the first time. I really don’t know if I should be doing anything special for security (the wireless network has a password – is that enough?). I don’t really know any of the special things about laptops (like what the function keys do). I know some of this is very specific to model, but of course it didn’t come with a manual. Is it okay that I plug in my laptop every night, even if I didn’t run the battery all the way down? Should I run it down deliberately once in a while? Really basic beginner stuff is what I need.

I know there’s some way to set up hardware profiles to do this kind of thing, but I’ve never really explored it since I’m lazy. Anyway, I’d really like to know how best to get a laptop to automatically sense and respond to a change in environment. For example, when I’m hooked up to an external monitor, automatically change to a higher resolution or switch to dual-monitor mode. When I attach a wired connection, turn off wireless and vice-versa. When I attach a USB mouse, turn off the trackpad. You know, all of those steps required to transition from home to on-the-go to work that are painful to do repetitively.

    Sharing One Laptop

In my family, “downsizing” has meant reducing our stable of computers from six down to just one. As a one computer family, my wife and I share a single laptop from which we both do all of our personal and work-related computing. There are hardware (i.e. adding as much RAM as possible), software (i.e. programs to seek out duplicate files), and behavioral (i.e. closing programs that you’re not actively using) tactics we’ve embraced to make this sharing go as smoothly as possible. It works well enough for us that we’ve decided that, once we can afford a second computer, we’ll probably buy one in an alternative form factor and share that one too.

I’d love to see an article written from the standpoint of how to guide that explores efficient and effective laptop sharing between two or more people. There’s a lot more to doing it well than people might realize.

I think the reality is that the majority of us have no real idea of, nor will ever actual use our laptops to their full potential. I think it would be great to have a series on the basics (backing up data, file storage etc) that includes tools and tips for making using them more effective and making us more efficient.
