Toshiba Portege R700 Ultraportable: Floats like a Butterfly Stings Like a Bee

Toshiba has announced the new portable Toshiba Portege R700 13.3″ ultra-portable notebook. This new Portege notebook isn’t just lightweight , it’s powerful too. Weighing in at three pounds, yet sporting full power Intel Core processors, the Toshiba Portege R700 is an impressive looking notebook. Also, this super-light machine claims up to 8.5 hours on the standard 6-cell battery and up to 12.5 with the  9-cell extended battery. Best of all, retail pricing starts at $889.

To pull all of this off Toshiba has introduced a new cooling method in the R700 series , called Airflow Cooling, which “uses directed streams of fresh air to cool the heat-generating components”; according to the press release from Toshiba. The case is a magnesium alloy with a honeycomb rib design that aims to improve the durability of the new R700. To keep the notebook running in the real world there is also a hard drive impact sensor and a spill-resistant keyboard. Unlike many ultra-portable notebooks, the Portege R700 keeps the optical drive which many users still need or use on a regular basis.

Here’s a Video Overview of the new Toshiba R700:

The Toshiba R700 features a 13.3″ widescreen display that has a 1366 x 768 resolution and supports 720P playback. It is powered by new Intel Core i processors, starting with the i3 on the consumer and entry level business model up to the Intel Core i7 on the high-end Portege R700-S1330 which is aimed at the power business user. The notebooks all have 4GB DDR3 RAM and offer hard drive options from 320GB to 500GB or a 128GB SSD on the Portege R700-S1330.

There are two distinct segments that the Portege R700 is aimed at, the Consumer with the Toshiba Portege R705-P25 sold exclusively at Best Buy and Business user with the Portege R700-S1310, Portege R700-S1320 and Portege R700-S1330 which add features like an expresscard, USB 3.0 and docking abilities. The business ready Portege R700 models will be available in July direct from Toshiba for $999, $1,299 and $1,599 respectively.

The consumer model of the Toshiba Portege R705 retails price at $889, but it is currently on sale for $799 at Best Buy with Intel Wireless Display, or WiDi, capability. This allows you to transmit your screen to an HDTV with no wires, though you will need a $99 NetGear Push2TV adapter for most HDTVs.
