TSA Agent Steal $200k+ of Mobile Tech Gear…Yet Another Reason it Sucks to Fly

I’m sure most TSA agents dutifully go about their jobs, but it’s guys like the TSA agent who stole more than $200,000 of mobile tech gear and sold it on eBay that make flying more and more miserable.

Pythias Brown, a TSA agent Newark Liberty Airport was arrested for stealing $200,000 worth of travelers’ tech gear, including 66 digital camera, 31 laptops and a $50,000 video camera. Brown went undetected until CNN found one of its stolen cameras for sale on eBay, where he built up quite a good reputation.

Brown stole the items from checked luggage, which is subject to inspection in the bowels of airports and out of passengers’ sight. I’m not into consipracy theories, but I find it hard to believe that none of his coworkers noticed him carting away broadcast cameras and notebooks.

I’ve never had anything stolen from my luggage, but several of my friends and family members have complained about gadgets mysteriously disappearing from checked baggage.

The moral of the story? Keep your gadgets in your carry-on luggage or FedEx them to your destination.
