Vodafone Offers up Free Dell Mini 9 w/ 3G Subscription

The age of free notebooks is upon us as Vodafone’s announced it will offer a complimentary Dell Inspiron Mini 9 to anyone willing to pay £25 ($45) per month for 1GB data transfer via the wireless carrier’s 3G network.

There is a two-year contract term and the bundle doesn’t make all that much sense since a 3GB 3G service with a USB modem is available for just £15 per month. As Chris from Slashgear points out, it makes sense to buy the Mini 9 separately if you plan on actually using your 3G connection.

I believe it’s just a matter of time before Dell, HP and others team up with Sprint, AT&T and/or Verizon to offer “free” or subsidized computers. The challenge is that relatively few notebook users in the U.S. pay for a 3G connection. Those that do pay the $60+ per month are typically business users who won’t be satisfied with a “netbook” such as the Dell Inspiron Mini 9 and can afford a full-fledged notebook.
