24 Illegal Songs Cost Woman $220,000

The music industry is serious about stopping illegal music downloads. In the first trial to challenge illegal music downloads, a single mother from Minnesota was ordered $220,000 dollars for sharing 24 songs via Kazaa.

Jammie Thomas, along with thousands of others, were sued by the Recording Industry Industry of America and six music labels. She was the first to refuse to settle and paid $60,000 in legal fees to fight the charges. She could have paid a few thousands dollars in fines. Thomas claims she never downloaded or shared the songs.

I don’t recommend illegally sharing music for several reasons, but I think it’s impossible for the industry to put an end to it.
