Websigns could prove to be the ultimate local search advertising system because the it will be able to determine exactly what users are doing out in the real world. It's an innovative way to search for information with minimum user input. If a user pointed at a restaurant he could instantly read reviews, book reservations or an ad could invite him in to try today's specials.Users pointing at a gas station could receive info about nearby locations with cheaper prices. McKiney showed us a demo that pulls local info from Yahoo! mobile search, but this technology could be integrated with any web service. Web Signs is being developed by HP Labs.[brightcove 900482218]

We will be launching a Linux based OS (Ubuntu) on the E520, 1505 and XPS 410 starting next Thursday, 5/24. We expect these systems to be less than 1% of our OS mix for the entire year which is ~20,000 systems annually. Please cover the huddle deck below with your team by EOB Sunday. If any questions come up, please let me know so I can address them before launch. The goal of launching Linux is to continue to give our customers more choices to customize their new Dell. Providing more options to our Linux Enthusiast customer group will hopefully create even more Raving Fans!!

Stan Sigman heads up AT&T's wireless division and was recently interviewed by USA Today:
"I'm glad we have (the iPhone) in our bag," he says. "Others will try to match it, but for a period of time, they're going to be playing catch-up."
Hardball is nothing new in the cellphone industry. But as white-hot growth finally begins to slow, it's getting downright desperate out there.
Many users who would be glad to pony up $600 for an iPhone will not switch from competitors service plans for various reasons, especially if they are under contract for the next couple of years. But if the iPhone garners the same kind of cult following as the iPod, AT&T will be sitting pretty.

]]>Because of a data entry error, the bezel – the frame that surrounds the LCD panel – was omitted from the bill of materials for certain T61 & R61 14.1†widescreen orders which is sent to our factories to specify how to build the products. This omission caused a majority of the orders taken between May 9th and May 24th to “hang†or get rejected by the manufacturing process. The missing part problem was discovered and we began to work with manufacturing to fix the rejected orders and get them fulfilled ASAP. To say we are sorry is not enough. We intend to conduct a thorough post-mortem of this incident to ensure it does not happen again. Thank you for whatever patience you have left.Lenovo's offered a choice of a free batter, AC adapter or carrying case to some customers as a consolation for waiting so long. Customers are not impressed and are sounding off at Lenovo Blogs, with about 400 comments. I canceled my order for a T61, which I think is a superb notebook. I placed my order on May 30 and was told it would ship on June 18. This estimated ship date did not change, but after two weeks of hearing about others' experiences I canceled my order to avoid any possible delay. Waiting three weeks for a computer is bad enough, but I shouldn't have to stress and continually check in on order status Hopefully someone who ordered before me will receive the T61 I configured.]]>

Here's what the inside of the new ThinkPads look like. The system contains of a personal computer you take with you during the day, several context-oriented docking stations (for example a home entertainment station for your living room), a "senstylus pen" to control the computer and a leather etui. The computer itself has an OLED touchscreen, where you can directly work on, much like with a umpc or pda. The whole screen is a slider, it can be moved forward to reveal a second OLED touchscreen underneath, where you can display a keyboard or working controls, similar to a setup with 2 monitors. Because of its interactivity you can place exactly the controls there that you need at the moment or have individual styles and themes to fit your taste. It is also possible to either have a keyboard diplayed there or to write directly on it with the pen. The pen has 2 dedicated areas: in the front there is a groove that devides the 2 actionbuttons when you are holding it as a normal stylus pen. In the rear, you have a thumb-sensor field so that you can use the pen as a remote control if you turn it around. One of the stations is designed for your living room. It is spezialized on home entertainment character. The computer has a laser projector embedded at its bottom side. With it, you can project the image to the wall and use the computer with the pen in remote control mode, while sitting on your couch, to watch a movie, for example.Check out these detailed drawings of the Compenion

The iPhone's 4GB or 8GB of storage capacity is tiny compared to 30GB or larger Video iPods. If you have a large video and music library this will be frustrating since you'll have to pick and chose what to load onto your iPhone. Videos are much sharper and fun to watch on the iPhone than any previous iPod. The camera works well, but I really wish it recorded videos. Apple really needs to address this since even free mobile phones can record video. The virtual touchscreen keyboard will take some getting used to, especially for users that are used to physical keyboards found on most other devices. The most important part of any camera is the lens and webcams are no exception. Logitech's teamed up with Carl Zeiss to deliver a glass lens, capable of delivering 2MP images and 1.3 megapixel video. Users can record high-def video for computer playback or capture 8MP (interpolated) still images. The photo of the crayons below is an example of the potential of this camera. The Logitech QuickCam Pro for Notebooks comes with a carrying case and headset so you can keep your video chats private when you're out and about. There's also a stand to elevate the camera to face level and so users have more flexibility in where they position the camera. There are lots of fun things you can do with Fun Filters and Avatars (see video above), but one of the best features is RightLight. Logitech's RightLight technology improves image quality in low-light environments or when there's strong backlighting. This is something that built-in webcams don't have and one reason to take a look at this camera even if you already have a buil-in webcam on your notebook. Logitech packs a lot of features, accessories and quality into this package. The QuickCam Pro for Notebooks will retail for $99 at most major electronics retailers.]]>

When we launched Windows Vista in January 2007, we identified Windows Ultimate Extras as a unique series of add-ons that would be available to Windows Vista Ultimate customers. To date, we have released four sets of Extras – Windows Hold’Em, 16 Language Packs for the Windows multi-language user interface, Secure Online Key Backup, and Windows BitLocker Drive Preparation Tool. We want to let our Windows Vista Ultimate customers know that we are actively working to deliver the remaining Extras that we identified in January. Our goal is to provide the highest-quality, most secure and reliable offerings, and as a result we are continuing our work on these offerings. We apologize for taking so long to provide a status update to customers. We intend to ship Windows DreamScene and the remaining 20 Language Packs by the end of the summer. We will not ship the last two Extras showcased in January (Windows DreamScene and the remaining 20 Language Packs) until they meet the high quality bar required by our enthusiastic customersâ€â€Âand we believe that we can achieve that bar by the end of this summer. We also intend to deliver additional Extras in the future. In addition to Windows DreamScene and the remaining Language Packs, we plan to ship a collection of additional Windows Ultimate Extras over the next couple years that we are confident will delight our passionate Windows Vista Ultimate customers. We cannot identify dates or provide details at this timeâ€â€Âbut once we ship Windows DreamScene and the remaining Language Packs, we will provide more information about the next Extras. “More and more laptop users are abandoning the touch pad in favor of a cordless notebook mouse,†said Rory Dooley, Logitech senior vice president and general manager of the Control Devices business unit. “However, with most notebook mice, the size of the receiver forces people to plug and unplug the receiver each time they use the laptop. Because we were able to make the nano-receiver so small, it can remain plugged into the laptop at all times so on-the-go notebook users save valuable time and never have to worry about where the receiver is.†The VX Nano mouse features the MicroGear Precision Scroll Wheel, which Logitech introduced last fall. This makes it possible to scroll through up to 10,000 rows in an Excel spreadsheet in 10 seconds. There are also several shortcut buttons on the VX Nano to make it easier to quickly navigate web sites and even search the Internet. A laser engine ensures smooth cursor control and precision tracking on virtually any surface, and Logitech’s 2.4 GHz digital cordless technology provides a robust wireless connection. The Logitech VX Nano Cordless Laser Mouse for Notebooks is expected to be available in the U.S. and Europe in late August for a suggested retail price of $69.99.
Since last week's update and my subsequent correction, there are lots of customers like Ed, George Pharell, Francois and others who are asking me for updates on the status of the XPS M1330 notebook. I can confirm that we have started shipping systems. However, the process to ramp production has taken a bit longer than we expected. The reality is that due to the unique nature of some features of the notebook, we've had to work through some additional manufacturing processes. The important point is that we are now building orders to ship to customers worldwide, and we will keep working to ship these notebooks as quickly as we can. I'll provide another update by mid-next week to give you a better idea for where we are in working through the backlog. At this point, estimated ship dates for new orders is about four weeks. Like I mentioned in my previous post, some specific components like the thinner WLED display will add time to those estimated ship dates. I know many of you have been waiting eagerly for your XPS M1330 notebooks, and we appreciate your business. We are working through details in real time and will look to provide updates when we have more details to share. Thanks again for your patience, and stay tuned for a status update by mid-next week.via Direct2Dell]]>

Well as you may have guessed by now these are all charges for using the edge network while roaming internationally (in England). No phone calls mind you just data. According to AT&T that's at a rate of $2cents per K!.... That's like charging you $2cents per molecule of gas for you car! Those prices are certainl off the charts. One line on the bill shows a $103.92 charge for 5329KB of data transdfer alone. If you're worried about racking up International data roaming fees you should do one of the following things. 1) Switch of the radios in your iPhone or Smartphone. The iPhone's "airplane mode" shuts off the phone and Internet functions, but lets users access the iPod, calendar, photos, contacts and other applications. 2) DON'T USE YOUR PHONE.

The stand has three non-powered USB 2.0 ports, turning it into somewhat of a docking solution. This makes it more convenient to connect to your peripherals, but if any of them require a powered USB port, you'll have to opt for a $20 AC adapter. Additional offers may vary by]]>I have received hundreds of emails from iPhone customers who are upset about Apple dropping the price of iPhone by $200 two months after it went on sale. After reading every one of these emails, I have some observations and conclusions.First, I am sure that we are making the correct decision to lower the price of the 8GB iPhone from $599 to $399, and that now is the right time to do it. iPhone is a breakthrough product, and we have the chance to 'go for it' this holiday season. iPhone is so far ahead of the competition, and now it will be affordable by even more customers. It benefits both Apple and every iPhone user to get as many new customers as possible in the iPhone 'tent'. We strongly believe the $399 price will help us do just that this holiday season. Second, being in technology for 30+ years I can attest to the fact that the technology road is bumpy. There is always change and improvement, and there is always someone who bought a product before a particular cutoff date and misses the new price or the new operating system or the new whatever. This is life in the technology lane. If you always wait for the next price cut or to buy the new improved model, you'll never buy any technology product because there is always something better and less expensive on the horizon. The good news is that if you buy products from companies that support them well, like Apple tries to do, you will receive years of useful and satisfying service from them even as newer models are introduced. Third, even though we are making the right decision to lower the price of iPhone, and even though the technology road is bumpy, we need to do a better job taking care of our early iPhone customers as we aggressively go after new ones with a lower price. Our early customers trusted us, and we must live up to that trust with our actions in moments like these. Therefore, we have decided to offer every iPhone customer who purchased an iPhone from either Apple or AT&T, and who is not receiving a rebate or any other consideration, a $100 store credit towards the purchase of any product at an Apple Retail Store or the Apple Online Store. Details are still being worked out and will be posted on Apple's website next week. Stay tuned. We want to do the right thing for our valued iPhone customers. We apologize for disappointing some of you, and we are doing our best to live up to your high expectations of Apple. Steve Jobs Apple CEO]]>
To date, color options are the main source of delay on Inspiron notebooks. Basic colors like black are easier to produce. Premium colors and finishes like we use on the Inspiron models introduce complexity into the process, and that's holding things up. Just as Alex mentioned in his post about colors on the M1330, producing smaller quantities is not the issueâ€â€Âit's mainly an issue of scale. We'll continue to work directly with suppliers to ultimately increase our production on color notebooks. Besides scale, we are also focused on maintaining the levels of quality we established when we designed these notebooks. In other words, we're not going to relax our quality standards to ship more products. If you're waiting on an Inspiron and want to share your frustration, head over to Direct2Dell and leave a comment. There's been more than a thousand comments posted so far. Here's what some Dell customers are saying:
Harry said: Black isn't any better. I ordered my black Inspiron 1520 on 8/14/07. Estimated ship date was 8/30/07. When I checked status a few days later, I saw a link indicating "Why is my order delayed?". This freaked me out, so I called Dell, and was assured that my order had not been delayed, and that the link was there just in case it did get delayed at some point (hmmm). At 4:00 on the day it was supposed to ship, I got an email indicating that the ship date had been moved out to 9/14/07. What really angers me is knowing that they knew all along that the order was going to be delayed, but waited til the last possible minute to tell me. They're just stringing customers along trying not to lose orders.
This was supposed to be a computer for a college student. I have no choice, but to cancel my order. I'm purchasing an HP dv6563cl from Costco. My first non-Dell computer in over 10 years.
John N. said: Well, I called again after my Sept. 5th ship date was AGAIN pushed back...this is the FIFTH push back to the ship date! I originally ordered a Spring Green 1520, 9 cell battery, webcam, etc, on July 17th! That's Forty-Four days and counting!!! When I called customer service, I was told that there is already an "expedite" flag on the order...for all the good that seems to be doing. I asked them if I could expect the order to be filled this fiscal quarter! :)Maybe Dell should outsource the painting process to these guys. They don't seem to have any problem painting a Dell notebook black...

Thank you again for using your American Express Card! Sincerely, Your Purchase Protection Plan Claims ExaminerI'm more than satisfied with how AMEX handled this, but what about those customers that had their claims denied? I'm guesing that AMEX really is looking at iPhone owners' claims on a case-by-case basis as I was told when I filed my claim. I have both business and personal AMEX cards and put virtually everything I purchase on one of the two cards, making this $108.50 a drop in the bucket compared to the fees AMEX collects from merchants. I'm guessing that AMEX is probably denying claims from customers who don't spend a whole lot on their cards. The credit from Apple and American Express mean that it cost me just over $399 to buy my iPhone on June 29. This sure eases the pain of spending $599 on a phone without getting approval from my wife.]]>
Thank you for your interest in One Laptop Per Child. Our mission is to provide a means for learning, self-expression and exploration to the nearly two billion children of the developing world with little or no access to education. While children are by nature eager for knowledge, many countries have little resources to devote to educationâ€â€Âsometimes less than $20 a year per child. Imagine the potential that could be unlocked by giving every child in the world the tools they need to learn, no matter who they are, no matter where they live, no matter how little they may have. If you'd like to donate an XO laptop today, simply click the donation button on the right, above the photo. A donation of $200 will pay for and deliver one XO laptop to a child in a developing nation, $400 will pay for and deliver two XO laptops, and so on. Starting November 12, One Laptop Per Child will be offering a Give 1 Get 1 Program for a brief window of time. For $399, you will be purchasing two XO laptopsâ€â€Âone that will be sent to empower a child to learn in a developing nation, and one that will be sent to your child at home. If you're interested in Give 1 Get 1, we'll be happy to send you a reminder email. Just sign up in the box to the left and you'll receive your reminder prior to the November 12 launch date. Once again, thank you. We sincerely hope you'll join our growing community of people working to create a connected, educated, enlightened future for the world's most essential resourceâ€â€Âits children. Apple has discovered that many of the unauthorized iPhone unlocking programs available on the Internet cause irreparable damage to the iPhone's software, which will likely result in the modified iPhone becoming permanently inoperable when a future Apple-supplied iPhone software update is installed. Apple plans to release the next iPhone software update, containing many new features including the iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store (www.itunes.com), later this week. Apple strongly discourages users from installing unauthorized unlocking programs on their iPhones. Users who make unauthorized modifications to the software on their iPhone violate their iPhone software license agreement and void their warranty. The permanent inability to use an iPhone due to installing unlocking software is not covered under the iPhone's warranty. There's going to be a lot of disappointed iPhone users out there. If you've already modified your iPhone, take a look at this TUAW guide and relock your iPhone before updating this week's iPhone update.]]>

]]>This has been done a lot. Some of them are just clumsy, look bad, or can’t be applied to Apple laptops because of the limited bending-angle of their screens. I’m suprised nobody looked at the obvious, and constructed a stand from a ring-binder. Its very cheap, easy to build, portable, and in addition contains most of the clutter i need on my desk (post-its, pen, my two external drives). You can even bundle any cables through the metal hole present in most binders. And most important: It perfectly fits the color of my laptop!

]]>I was walking along the displays in the Innovation Center and did a triple take when I saw this machine. It is a true drop it in the mud, run over it with your car, flush it down the toilet, ruggedized machine. AND it has a handle. If you are not familiar with the ruggedized space, what is different about rugged notebooks as compared to standard notebooks is that ruggedization is the primary design focus. Other considerations, such as weight, thickness, and battery life are secondary. The outer casing is thick magnesium. The corners are reinforced with thick rubber pads. The outside is completely sealed so that it can be used under running water. To do this is a significant piece of thermal, acoustic, electrical, and computing engineering and not just putting a couple of protective plastic parts on the system. This machine is only available in China, and is so new that the team there didn’t have any details on it.

Product PageA broad alliance of leading technology and wireless companies today joined forces to announce the development of Android, the first truly open and comprehensive platform for mobile devices. Google Inc., T-Mobile, HTC, Qualcomm, Motorola and others have collaborated on the development of Android through the Open Handset Alliance, a multinational alliance of technology and mobile industry leaders. This alliance shares a common goal of fostering innovation on mobile devices and giving consumers a far better user experience than much of what is available on today's mobile platforms. By providing developers a new level of openness that enables them to work more collaboratively, Android will accelerate the pace at which new and compelling mobile services are made available to consumers. With nearly 3 billion users worldwide, the mobile phone has become the most personal and ubiquitous communications device. However, the lack of a collaborative effort has made it a challenge for developers, wireless operators and handset manufacturers to respond as quickly as possible to the ever-changing needs of savvy mobile consumers. Through Android, developers, wireless operators and handset manufacturers will be better positioned to bring to market innovative new products faster and at a much lower cost. The end result will be an unprecedented mobile platform that will enable wireless operators and manufacturers to give their customers better, more personal and more flexible mobile experiences. Thirty-four companies have formed the Open Handset Alliance, which aims to develop technologies that will significantly lower the cost of developing and distributing mobile devices and services. The Android platform is the first step in this direction -- a fully integrated mobile "software stack" that consists of an operating system, middleware, user-friendly interface and applications. Consumers should expect the first phones based on Android to be available in the second half of 2008. The Android platform will be made available under one of the most progressive, developer-friendly open-source licenses, which gives mobile operators and device manufacturers significant freedom and flexibility to design products. Next week the Alliance will release an early access software development kit to provide developers with the tools necessary to create innovative and compelling applications for the platform. Android holds the promise of unprecedented benefits for consumers, developers and manufacturers of mobile services and devices. Handset manufacturers and wireless operators will be free to customize Android in order to bring to market innovative new products faster and at a much lower cost. Developers will have complete access to handset capabilities and tools that will enable them to build more compelling and user-friendly services, bringing the Internet developer model to the mobile space. And consumers worldwide will have access to less expensive mobile devices that feature more compelling services, rich Internet applications and easier-to-use interfaces -- ultimately creating a superior mobile experience. Open Software, Open Device, Open Ecosystem "This partnership will help unleash the potential of mobile technology for billions of users around the world. A fresh approach to fostering innovation in the mobile industry will help shape a new computing environment that will change the way people access and share information in the future," said Google Chairman and CEO Eric Schmidt. "Today's announcement is more ambitious than any single 'Google Phone' that the press has been speculating about over the past few weeks. Our vision is that the powerful platform we're unveiling will power thousands of different phone models." "As a founding member of the Open Handset Alliance, T-Mobile is committed to innovation and fostering an open platform for wireless services to meet the rapidly evolving and emerging needs of wireless customers," said René Obermann, Chief Executive Officer, Deutsche Telekom, parent company of T-Mobile. "Google has been an established partner for T-Mobile’s groundbreaking approach to bring the mobile open Internet to the mass market. We see the Android platform as an exciting opportunity to launch robust wireless Internet and Web 2.0 services for T-Mobile customers in the US and Europe in 2008." "HTC's trademark on the mobile industry has been its ability to drive cutting-edge innovation into a wide variety of mobile devices to create the perfect match for individuals," said Peter Chou, Chief Executive Officer, HTC Corp. "Our participation in the Open Handset Alliance and integration of the Android platform in the second half of 2008 enables us to expand our device portfolio into a new category of connected mobile phones that will change the complexion of the mobile industry and re-create user expectations of the mobile phone experience." "The convergence of the wireless and Internet industries is creating new partnerships, evolving business models and driving innovation," said Dr. Paul E. Jacobs, Chief Executive Officer of Qualcomm. "We are extremely pleased to be participating in the Open Handset Alliance, whose mission is to help build the leading open-source application platform for 3G networks. The proliferation of open-standards-based handsets will provide an exciting new opportunity to create compelling services and devices. As a result, we are committing research and development resources to enable the Android platform and to create the best always-connected consumer experience on our chipsets." "Motorola has long been an advocate of open software for mobile platforms. Today, we're excited to continue this support by joining Google and others in the announcement of the Open Handset Alliance and Android platform.
