Lenovo IdeaPad U510 Ultrabook Brings a 15.6″ Display to the Party

It was only a matter of time before big screens hit the Ultrabook market. We first heard about 15-inch Ultrabooks at CES 2012, and now Lenovo is offering up the IdeaPad U510.

The IdeaPad U510 is an Ultrabook, but it is thicker and heavier than we are used to seeing. For the added size and weight, users gain the larger display and in this case an optical drive.

The U510 features a metal finish in a variety of colors and weighs in at less than 5 pounds. The IdeaPad U510 is 22 mm thick, a little thicker than two iPhones stacked on top of each other.

Users hoping for a MacBook Pro with Retina Display competitor can keep looking, the 15.6-inch display only offers a 1366 x 768 resolution, which cuts into the value of  a larger display.

Lenovo is outfitting the U510 with up to an Intel Core i7 third gen Intel processor, up to 8GB of RAM and packs in a NVIDIA GeForce 625M GPU with 1GB of RAM. This isn’t an Ultrabook that skimps on specs, and should deliver solid performance.

Unlike most Ultrabooks, the IdeaPad U510 includes an optical drive, providing users with the choice of a DVD drive or Blu-Ray drive. For internal storage, users can pick up to 1TB of storage and an express cache of SSD storage for the operating system. This will speed up boots and app responsiveness.

Lenovo claims the U510 will offer 6 hours of battery life, an estimate that will drop with gaming and heavy use.

The IdeaPad U510 starts at $679 and should arrive in September, though we don’t expect Windows 8 models to ship until October.
