How to Update to Windows 10 Right Now

The Windows 10 Update came out as expected and some people want to update to Windows 10 right now without waiting for Microsoft to push out the update to their computer. Others will want to control how and when they update, like to install using a flash drive to do a clean install. We’ll give you the links to update to Windows 10.

Download the Update to Windows 10 Tool

Microsoft offers a tool that users can download and it gives them an option to install without waiting. Get the update tool on the Windows update site over at Microsoft. Download the tool for your kind of Windows installation. It offers two tools, one for 32-bit installs and one for 64-bit. Find out which one a computer has installed by opening the computer’s Properties screen. Do this by going to the Start Screen in Windows 8 and typing This PC. Rick-click on This PC in the list and choose Properties.

For Windows 7 users click on the Start button and then right-click on Computer and choose Properties. Under the System section look for the System Type section. It reads either 32-bit or 64-bit.

Once you know which kind of update tool to choose on the paged linked above, download it.

Update to Windows 10 Using the Tool

Run the update tool. If there are any errors after running the tool, then run it as an Administrator instead. To do that, right-click on the tool and choose Run as administrator. Enter the system’s administrator password.

The above screen appears with two options. Upgrade this PC now will do an upgrade of the PC that’s running the setup too. This won’t work if the user’s computer doesn’t have enough free storage available. It needs at least 10GB, but you really need more to run it well. I tried it on a computer with that much space and it took hours to update.

To free up space, first empty the Recycle Bin. Right-click it on the Windows Desktop or open File Explorer and right-click on the C: drive and choose Properties. Then pick Disk Cleanup and check all that you want to erase. Now click on OK.

Run the Setup tool again. Remember to run it as an Administrator if you get the “Something happened” error. Choose Upgrade this PC now and click Next

For those who can’t free up enough space, get a blank 16GB USB flash drive or a fast 16GB or larger SD or micro-SD card and insert it. Then run the tool. Follow the onscreen steps and let it update. The computer will restart.

Create Installation Media to Update to Windows 10 Later

The other option in the Windows 10 Setup tool says Create installation media for another PC. Choose this and click Next. Again, this requires a 16GB USB flash drive. Select the options on the next screen. Choose language, edition and architecture using the drop down menus.

Choose the Edition that’s already installed on the computer you own. For example, Windows 8 Home users should pick Home. Pro users should select Pro. Find the architecture using the instructions above and choose it here. If you have room on your USB drive, select both under Architecture and it will put the installation files for both 32 and 64-bit.

For those not sure which kind of Windows to pick on the above screen, head over to the page on Microsoft’s site which explains which version of Windows people should use to update to Windows 10 based on which version they have installed on their computer now.

Now click on Next. For those using a USB drive, select USB flash drive on the next screen. People who want to create a DVD with the Installation files on it, choose ISO file and then later burn the ISO to a disk. Click next and choose the Flash drive or the place to save the ISO file on the computer’s storage drive.

The update tool will copy the files to the USB drive or create the ISO file. When it’s finished, boot with the USB flash drive to install Windows 10. For those who created an ISO file, burn it to a DVD and then boot with the DVD.

How to Boot the Flash Drive or DVD

How do you boot with the flash drive or DVD? That varies depending on the computer. Some computers include a message on boot that asks the user to press a key to enter a boot menu. Others force the user to open their computer’s BIOS settings using a key on their keyboard when the computer boots.

Some machines need the user to go into the Recovery section of Windows 8 settings. In this last situation swipe in from the right side of the screen on a touch screen device or move the mouse the lower right corner. In either case, this brings up the Charms bar. Click or tap on Settings and then Change PC Settings. Select Update and recover and then Recovery. Choose Restart now and then choose Use a device. Select the USB drive and let the computer restart from the drive. Then follow the on-screen instructions to update.
