LaCie XtremKey: Waterproof, Drop-proof, Temperature-proof, and 10-Ton Truck Resistant

Today, LaCie announced its new XtremKey flash drive. Claiming to be “the world’s most adventurous USB flash drive”, the XtremKey is able to tackle the many adverse conditions, including being run over by a 10-ton truck.

With a plethora of flash drives on the market, it’s hard to differentiate based on anything other than storage capacity. The LaCie XtremKey sets itself apart from regular flash drives by offering unique protection from pretty much any element.

By any element, we mean that it is:

  • Waterproof – 100m
  • Drop-proof – 5m
  • Temperature-proof – Up to 392°F and down to -58°F (Though you should probably wait until the temperature regulates before plugging it into your computer)
  • 10-ton truck resistant Can withstand being run over by a 10-ton truck

Need proof, check out the video below.

The new XtremKey doesn’t sacrifice speed for protection either; the USB 2.0 flash drive runs at 30 mbps reading and 40 mbps writing.

The LaCie XtremKey will be available in August, with capacity ranging from 8GB to 64GB, starting at $49.99. For more information on the LaCie XtremKey, view the press release.

A similar, though not near as rugged, USB flash drive is the IronKey. This flash drive offers AES hardware encryption and state-of-the-art cryptography. It is waterproof, electromagnetically shielded, and tamper resistant. The IronKey starts at $79.00.
