HP USB Media Dock Unboxing and Hands On (Video)

If you use a notebook as your primary PC there are many reasons to have a laptop stand and a USB dock. Having a good laptop stand provides a more ergonomic work area; bringing your screen to the correct height and providing a better typing angle. A USB dock can also be very convenient, allowing you to connect multiple items – monitor included – to your notebook with one cable. Usually you need to purchase these items separately, but the new HP USB Media Dock combines a laptop stand, USB dock that’s powered by DisplayLink for connecting an external monitor and a sound system with a subwoofer to your notebook with one USB cable.

The team at DisplayLink was kind enough to send over one of the brand new consumer oriented HP USB Media Docks for us to test out.  Here’s our unboxing video and first impressions as well as a tour around the HP USB Media Dock.

After a day’s use it’s hard to imagine doing without a good laptop stand. When I have the stand at its highest angle I can see the screen head on instead of looking downward for hours on end. If I tilt the screen on my HP dv6 back all the way in this mode I can also comfortably use it while standing thanks to the fact that I use a hightop table as a desk. Being able to vary my working position is important, given the numerous hours I spend at the computer each day.

In the base of the HP USB Media Docking station there is the USB port replicator with 4 USB 2.0 connectors, Mic, Headphone, Ethernet and VGA as well as a power, USB in and Kensington lock. There are two speakers and a subwoofer as well which provide a big improvement of the standard notebook speakers. More details when we share our full review.

The HP USB Media Dock with DisplayLink technology is available from HP for $179.99. Right now you can get 20% off bringing the price down to $143.99.
