How to upgrade to Ubuntu 10.04 LTS Lucid Lynx

Ubuntu 10.04 LTS (long term support) Lucid has been released recently which includes the new Ubuntu music store and many other enhancements. This tutorial will show you how to upgrade to Ubuntu 10.04 from Ubuntu 9.10. Although this tutorial shows how to upgrade from 9.10, upgrading from other versions should be similar.

There are mainly two ways to upgrade to latest version of Ubuntu. You can upgrade using the Internet or you can use a CD or DVD which you have downloaded or ordered online. Upgrading Ubuntu from the Internet is pretty straight forward and very easy. It downloads the latest version from internet and installs it automatically.

Please note that upgrading through Internet might take a long time depending on your download speed. If you don’t have a very fast connection, you might want to download the Ubuntu ISO file or order a free installation CD from Ubuntu free of charge.

How to upgrade from Ubuntu latest version from alternate installation CD or ISO image:

I recommend using a CD or DVD to upgrade as it will make the upgrade process go much faster. Web instructions are further down the page.

Step 1: Download the Ubuntu alternate installation ISO image from Ubuntu site or order free CD from Ubuntu ShipIt.

Step 2: Burn the ISO image to CD.

Step 3: You can also avoid creating CD by mounting ISO image to existing version of Ubuntu to upgrade.  You can mount the ISO image with the following command,

‘sudo mount -o loop ~/Desktop/ubuntu-10.04-alternate-i386.iso /media/cdrom0′

Step 4: If you insert the CD it should be mounted automatically. If not, press alt + F2 and type below command.

gksu “sh /cdrom/cdromupgrade”

Step 5: A window will appear asking you to upgrade to the latest version as shown below.

Step 6: Enter the root password and press OK.

Step 7: A window dialog will be displayed offering an option to include latest updates from the internet. If you don’t have network cable plugged in or don’t want to use latest updates from internet then select ‘No’.

Also note that if you select the ‘YES’ option it will take longer to upgrade your system depending on your internet speed. If you selected ‘No’, you can always download the latest updates later.

Step 8: The “Distribution Upgrade” window will be displayed and your Ubuntu upgrade will start.

Step 9: You may see a warning that third party sources are disabled. If you do, click ‘Close’. You can enable third party sources after installation completes.

Step 10: You may also receive a warning that support for some applications has ended. If you do, click close.

Step 11: Another window will pop up to start the upgrade.

Step 12: The opened window will tell you the number of packages that will be removed and installed. You can see this information in more detail as shown below.

Step 13: The upgrade process will start. The following screenshots will walk you through the process as you follow the on-screen instructions.

Step 14: Once installation is successful a window will pop up asking your permission to delete the old packages. You can remove the old packages as it will free up the space on hard drive.

Step 15: Restart the system to complete the upgrade.
