Upgrading the new Apple MacBook Pros

The new Apple MacBook Pro notebooks were just released this week, and already there is a company offering storage and memory modifications.

A company called Other World Computing has announced DDR3 1066Mhz memory upgrades for up to 8GB and 2.5″ internal hard drive upgrades to 1TB.  According to the press release, ” OWC Memory and internal drive upgrades offer owners of the newest MacBook Pro models (13, 15 and 17″ models) saving of up to 46% versus factory installed options as well as upgrade options not available from the factory.”

So what is the pricing like for these upgrades?  While its not super expensive (hey you already bought the MacBook Pro), its not cheap either.

  • The OWC 4GB RAM upgrade is $159.99.  This added to 2GB RAM still left gives the MacBook Pro owner 6GB of RAM.
  • The OWC  8GB RAM upgrade is $315.99.  This is two 4 GB RAM modules.
  • The hard drive options are for SATA and ATA drives, with a starting price of $49.99 for 160GB drive and going upward based on type, speed (5400 vs 7200) and  capacity.

Another important note on OWC is that there are additional saving to be had, if you trade in your memory and hard drive.  From the press release:

Additional savings are also available for customers who take advantage of OWC’s trade-in programs, which provides up to $30.00 cash back per 2GB Apple factory standard MacBook Pro memory module and up to $50.00 cash back for the Apple factory standard hard drive. With the trade-in, the final cost of OWC’s 8GB MacBook Pro Upgrade Kit is $315.99…a savings of $84.00 compared to the factory installed upgrade cost.
