Adobe set to launch update system

Adobe is looking to change how they handle updates to Adobe Acrobat and Acrobat Reader with a new type of update system.  The idea is very similar to Microsoft does updates for Windows and how Mozilla updates its Firefox browser. The users will be able to set how they want their updates delivered to their laptops, desktops, etc.

Next week, Adobe will activate its updater technology for all users of Adobe Reader and Acrobat and use it to deliver the updates to resolve critical security issues. The new updates will affect Adobe Reader 9.3.1 for Windows, Mac, and Unix, Acrobat 9.3.1 for Windows and Mac, and Reader 8.2.1 and Acrobat 8.2.1 for Windows and Mac.

Adobe users can set the system to perform an automatic update or a semi-automatic update.  Automatic updates happen without user intervention and are just updated, very much like Windows.  A semi-automatic update requires the user to decide when to apply the updates, like Firefox.  Either method works for updating any type of software package.  For most users, automatic updates are preferable since they just “happen.”

Will this help streamline Adobe updates?  Lets hope so.  The current method has always bothered me because it would pop up whenever I was working in another application.  I would wind up having to dismiss it and then ultimately forget about it. Anything that can help in the update wars is good with me.
