Want 1 GB/s internet speed at your Home? Ask Google to Wire Your Town

google fiber -2Do you want 1 GB/s internet speed at your home?  This might be possible if Google’s current fiber internet plan comes to life.

A few years back when Google was working on a fiber optics cable project, there were lots of rumors that Google was going to be a high speed internet provider; but nothing ever came of it.

Until today that is. After much of anticipation, Google announced they are planning to launch high speed fiber internet connections for at least 50,000 and potentially up to 500,000 people. Google is also planning to keep the costs competitive for this high speed internet connection so that it isn’t restricted to businesses.

They are looking for people from different areas to nominate their hometowns and communities for this new fiber internet service. From now until March 26th you can tell Google why your hometown should take part in the program, and at this stage it doesn’t matter where you live in the states. You, and your local government leaders, can submit feedback to Google and plead your case for a 1 GB / second internet connection.

From Google’s blog

We plan to test ultra-high speed broadband networks in one or more trial locations across the country. Our networks will deliver Internet speeds more than 100 times faster than what most Americans have access to today over 1 gigabit per second, fiber-to-the-home connections. We’ll offer service at a competitive price to at least 50,000 and potentially up to 500,000 people.
