iTunes Offers Up HD ABC, CBS, FOX & NBC TV Shows

Apple announced that you can now buy high definition primetime shows form the four major TV networks for $2.99 per episode. The high definition shows can be viewed on your notebook or Apple TV. A standard definition version is included in the purchase price so you can watch them on your iPod or iPhone.

Now that Fox, NBC, CBS and ABC are all on board you can buy your favorite shows in HD all from one online store and watch them wherever you. Apple’s featuring shows like Lost, 30 Rock and CSI.

You can buy season passes for shows like House, Heroes and The Office for about $60. Be prepared to set aside some serious hard drive space on your notebook if you plan on buying a lot of HD episodes. I bought a single HD episode of Heroes and it ate up about 1.8GB of space (1.37GB for the HD version, 441MB for the standard definition version). If you want to save space and plan on watching your shows on your iPhone or iPod skip the HD downloads and just buy the standard def shows for $1.99 a pop.

Apple also announced that it has sold over 200 million TV episodes since it started selling shows. Only one million of those have been HD so far.

“We’ve got an incredible Fall 2008 TV lineup with over 70 primetime comedies and dramas, including many of the most popular shows on TV in stunning HD,” said Eddy Cue, Apple’s vice president of Internet Services. “With over 200 million episodes sold, iTunes customers have proven they love watching television on their computer, iPod, iPhone and TV with Apple TV.”
