HP tx1000 Tablet for Consumers

HP Pavilion tx1000 tablet PC

HP officially announced the Pavilion tx1000, its first Tablet PC notebook today at CES 2007. The tablet is the first consumer notebook to feature a touch screen display, a feature that’s been reserved for high-end notebooks until now. HP let us play with the tx1000 and we were impressed overall and excited another mainstream manufacturer will be pushing tablets.

HP’s tx1000 is a sleek tablet that’s been optimized for consumers both in price and features. Its lid has the familiar black imprint design, borrowed from the dv models from last year. The HP tx1000 wills start at $1,099, and top out at about $1,500.

Weighing in at 4.23 pounds, it is easy to carry and operate as a true tablet. The keyboard is responsive, and features full sized alpha-numeric keys, with the function keys shrunken down a bit. The trackpad is textured with little holes and is much easier to use than last year’s Pavillion dv models, which were glossy like the rest of the case.

The 12.1-inch WXGA display, along with its built-in display swivels 180-degrees and folds down flat. The media controls are also built into the display. This is a nice feature when watching movies and something other consumer tablets don’t have.

Tapping on the screen in either notebook or tablet mode allows users to control media controls or anything else a pointer can. The touchscreen feature is nice, but nowhere near as easy to use as the one found on the Thinkpad x60, but then again the Lenovo tablet is about twice the price.

The digital inking system needs some improvement and it is difficult to write legibly on the screen. Current TabletPC users will be sorely disappointed that HP decided to go with a pressure-sensitive stylus that requires the user to apply even force while writing.

It is powered exclusively by AMD processors for the time being, the model we saw was equipped with a Turion 64 X2 TL-56. Graphics are served up by an integrated NVIDIA GeForce Go6150 GPU. The tx1000us (the first model HP will sell) comes with 2 gigs of memory and 160GB hard drive. An 8x double layer DVDRW is also included.

It comfortably runs Vista Home Premium, with all the graphical goodies like Aero working just fine. There is an improved QuickPlay that lets you put music behind slideshows or use it as a Karaoke machine. The QuickPlay utility also provides access to the built-in webcam so you can record pics and video.

Power is provided by a tiny 4-cell battery that will playback DVDs for only two hours, with the display at half brightness. An extended 6-cell battery will be available shortly after launch. The extended battery is pretty much a must-have for the tx1000 if you want a truly mobile experience.

Left Side of the tx1000 features a Verizon wireless antenna

There are plenty of ports for such a small machine, including three USB ports, an ExpressCard slot and dual headphone jacks. There is an external antenna for Verizon wireless broadband, a feature that’s trickled down from HP’s business notebooks. While this is a nice option, Verizon wireless broadband is still too pricey for most students and consumers. This is a nice machine for home users and students that want to experience tablet computing for the first time. The tx1000 will probably be a top seller in the Tablet category this year.
