Random Notebook Searches Legal at Borders

Notebooks Subject To SearchAlmost everyone has something on their notebooks theyâ€â„¢d rather not hand over to Uncle Sam for inspection, but you’re out of luck if youâ€â„¢re passing through border patrol. According to a New York Times article today, any one who entering the United States from abroad may have their notebook searched and seized without probable cause. One such person had her computer seized more than a year ago and is still waiting to get it, and her data back. The scary part is nobody knows exactly what happens to the information on seized notebooks. Is the private info copied? Yet another reason for businesses to limit the amount of sensitive material individuals carry, and for users to backup files.
