Vizio threw a curveball right ahead of CES 2012, when it leaked out that the company best known for HDTVs was going to enter the computer market with three notebooks.

According to Vizio’s CTO Matt McRae, we will see a 15.6″ notebook as well as two “ultra-thin” models with 14″ and 15″ screens.

The notebooks, a 15 inch notebook and two ultra-thin notebooks take design cues from the MacBook Air and other Ultrabooks, and will be targets towards price conscious shoppers.

There’s no word on what will be powering these models, but you can see a HDMI port and a USB 3.0 connection in the image above, as well as a tightly packed keyboard. The notebooks may be thin and light, but I would be very surprised to see SSDs inside if Vizio is committed to low pricing.

Vizio has let slip that the notebooks will be able to stream to Vizio Smart HDTVs so that you can watch on the big screen or use it as a second display without the need for wires.

We have seen a number of manufacturers deliver Ultrabook looking notebooks for 2012, but with standard hard drives to keep costs down. I wouldn’t be surprised to see the thin 14 inch Vizio notebook on the shelf of Walmart in the $599 price range when Vizio starts shipping notebooks in June.

3 Reasons Vizio Notebooks Stand a Chance

The company will face an uphill battle in many regards, but Vizio notebooks stand a chance of catching on in 2012 with price sensitive consumers who want something new.

Price

Consumers are as conscious as ever about the price of their notebooks, and if Vizio can deliver a good feature set at the $500 price range, the company could grab marketshare form shoppers at Walmart and Amazon.

Shoppers who are sick of HP and Dell laptops packed with 5-year-old technology, which tend to show up on the shelves at Walmart.

Distribution

Speaking of Walmart, Vizio already has inroads to millions of price sensitive shoppers, many of which have already purchased, or thought of purchasing something with the Vizio name.

Walmart has over 9,000 stores across the world, which gives Vizio a great distribution channel to leverage.

Brand Recognition

Vizio is new to notebooks, which will prove a challenge, but it means that they don’t have to deal with decade old customer service experiences which have led some shoppers to swear off brands like Dell, which my wife won’t touch.

Vizio can take advantage of the shoppers who have had good experiences with a Vizio HDTV or sound accessory and lure them in with the promise of connectivity and a good priced notebook.

Panasonic Viera 46″ 720p Plasma HDTV (Model # TC-P46C2) $499 at Best Buy

This HDTV isn’t 1080P, but then again neither are the shows coming from your cable provider. If you don’t buy a lot of digital content or watch Blu-Ray this is a good deal.

Acer ASPIRE AS5742-7653 – $499 at Office Max

The Acer ASPIRE AS5742-7653 is one of the most fully loaded laptops we have seen for Black Friday 2010 at this price point. If you wait in line for anything, this would be worth it.

HP G72-B66US – $499 at Staples

With the G72 from Staples, you get a large 17.3″ screen fast Intel Core i3 processor and a good helping of RAM and hard drive space to round out the offering.

HP Pavilion DV6-3127dx – $499 at Best Buy

The DV6 laptops from HP are a step up form many of the Black Friday notebooks, even those with almost identical specs thanks to their metal lid which adds to the durability and overall quality of the device.

Epson Moviemate Portable Projector – $499 at Best Buy

This is not an HD projector, but for shoppers who are looking to add a large (up to 300″) screen in the house this is one to check out.

This 14″ notebook comes packed with an Intel Core i5 processor, 4GB RAM and a 500GB hard drive. It also has an metal finish that makes it more durable than most notebooks in this price range, especially on Black Friday.

The Loser:

As far as bad Black Friday deals go in the $600 laptop range, we have to pick the Dell Studio 15 from Costco because it doesn’t offer anything extra over the cheaper notebooks in this price range. If you are already a Costco member and shopping there on Black Friday it’s still an OK deal, but otherwise look at the Dell Inspiron 15R straight from Dell for a bit cheaper or go to OfficeMax for the Toshiba Satellite L655-S5103 that’s only $529.

The Best:

We chose the Acer ASPIRE AS5742-7653 because it comes with an incredibly fast Intel Core i5 processor with TurboBoost, 4GB RAM, a large 500GB hard drive and a full complement of ports and items like a webcam and HDMI port this is an incredible deal. This notebook will keep up with the needs of most home users for several years and thanks to the specs, you won’t spend all that time waiting for programs to launch.

Runner Up:

A close runner up for those looking for a larger screen is the HP G72-B66US from Staples which brings a 17.3″ screen an Intel Core i3 processor to the mix for $499. If you can’t snag the Acer from Office Max, Best Buy also has a 15.6″ Black Friday laptop deal on the HP Pavilion DV6-3127dx which comes with an Intel Core i3 processor and is just $499.

In every category there’s a best and a worst. In the case of laptops under $500 the Toshiba Satellite C655D-S5088 is the worst deal for Black Friday 2010 because it doesn’t offer much more than similar models available under $400.

The Lenovo G550 wins out because even the low end Lenovo laptops are known for a decent build quality and for $20 less than the competition you’re getting the same thing. Essentially, in this price range, you could drop down to the Best Black Friday Laptop under $250 to get a similar Black Friday computer.

If you you can manage to spend the extra $50 jump up to the Black Friday Laptops under $400 category which contains the HP G62-340US dual core notebook for $329 from Office Depot.

In this category there isn’t much to separate the winners from the losers, but the value for the HP G56-141us isn’t enough to make it a good buy. Again, you’re better off bumping up to $329 for a dual core machine.

When it comes to Black Friday, there are always crazy cheap laptops, and Black Friday 2010 is no different. This year we are seeing netbooks under $100 and even laptops under $200. While we still think you’ll get a better value for your money bumping up to a dual core notebook for around $329, we recognize that many users are looking for the cheapest laptop they can find. In that spirit we rounded up the Black Friday netbooks and laptops under $250 and chose the best.

Of all these Black Friday Laptop Deals, the best Black Friday Laptop as chosen by Notebooks.com is the Compaq CQ10-405DX from Best Buy.

We chose the Compaq CQ10-405DX as the best Black Friday Netbook under $250 because it offers a relatively modern Intel Atom processor, 1GB of RAM and a full complement of netbook ports for $149, which is the cheapest actual netbook we have seen on Black Friday. It may not have the chops for handling all types of web video like you would find on a newer netbook with a dual core processor or a Broadcom HD accelerator, but it will be perfect as a secondary computer for most users and as a primary machine for users who only need it for email, web surfing and editing office documents.

This even beats out the $198 eMachines eMEs28-2325 Black Friday laptop from Walmart which doesn’t offer much more power. If you really want a bigger screen and netbook performance you can try for the $198 Walmart laptop, but you’ll be better off picking up a dual core laptop that can handle the needs of most modern computer users better.

At the other end of the spectrum, the 7″ Sylvania Netbook from CVS is the worst deal we have seen for many reasons, but mostly because it is not really a netbook in terms of what consumers are looking for. Spend the extra $50 to get the Compaq from Best Buy and you will have an immeasurably better experience!

Virgin Mobile is partnering with Walmart to extend the reach and the value of the company’s BroadBand2Go mobile broadband offering. Starting today Virgin Mobile users who purchase a Virgin Mobile Mifi or Virgin Mobile Ovation USB modem from Walmart will have the option of using an affordable $10 a month data plan that offers 1 GB of data.

Users will be able to top up their MiFi using speciaal $20 data plan cards sold at Walmart and made available online through Virgin Mobile. According to the announcement if you already have a Virgin Mobile Broadband2GO MiFi or USB Modem you can take advantage of the offer too.

The plan is a Walmart exclusive. That means unless you purchased your Virgin Mobile Device from Walmart you cannot use it with this new, more affordable, data plan. This is a big letdown for anyone who already has a Virgin Mobile device, depending on your usage you may be better off selling your old device and picking up a new one from Walmart.

As always Virgin Mobile’s BroadBand2Go mobile data plan does not require a contract. You can check coverage online, which is based on Sprint’s network.
