Verizon’s First LTE Notebook Launches; No Reason To Buy is a post by K. T. Bradford from Notebooks.com.

Starting today, the first LTE-enabled laptop goes on sale on the Verizon Wireless website. The lucky machine is the HP Pavilion dm1, the darling of the low-cost, AMD Fusion ultraportable set. Customers can order a dm1 from Verizon for $599 with or without contract. But my question upon seeing this news was: why would they? Seriously, why would anyone buy a notebook with mobile broadband built in these days? It doesn’t make practical or financial sense.

Back when carriers started selling netbooks with 3G in 2008 I understood why some consumers would go for it. Mobile broadband dongles weren’t as prevalent, personal hotspots were new in town, and smartphone tethering was a confusing process (if you even knew it was possible). Plus, the netbooks were often subsidized and, at the outset, cost less than the models one could buy in a store.

Even at that, buying a carrier netbook wasn’t a great deal. The 2-year contract meant the devices would cost you over $1,000 in that time and most of them came with small 3-cell batteries to boot.

Today, buying a notebook with built-in broadband makes much less sense. And the Pavilion dm1 doesn’t even have the benefit of a tempting subsidized price. You can get a dm1 from HP with 3GB of RAM and a 320GB hard drive for $429. The Verizon version has only 2GB of RAM and costs $599.

And since carriers still haven’t seen fit to offer wireless data plans that span across multiple devices, it doesn’t make sense to pay for data that’s limited to just a laptop. It’s a much better deal to activate the mobile hotspot function on your phone, tether, or invest in a personal hotspot. At least with those options you can share the connection with multiple devices. In the case of hotspots, you’ll not only have Internet for your laptop, but also your tablet, eReader, and other web-enabled gadgets.

Perhaps there are good reasons for having 4G embedded in your notebook. If you come up with any, I’d love to hear them in the comments. Otherwise, if you’re tempted by the Pavilion dm1 with sweet 4G, might I suggest you buy the MiFi 4510L hotspot ($29.99 currently) from Verizon and the notebook from HP?

With its nascent–but rapidly growing–4G LTE network, Verizon Wireless had introduced users in major metropolitan areas in the U.S. to mobile broadband speeds that rivaled or even exceeded wired broadband speeds. To take advantage of its 4G network, the carrier had introduced two LTE USB modems for laptops in December–the LG VL600 and the Pantech UML290. At the devices’ unveiling, Verizon only offered Windows PC support, but now the appropriate Mac drivers are available for OS X users to experience 4G network with the Pantech UML290 modem.

Support for Mac is still not available for the LG modem, but will be forthcoming according to the carrier.

Users of Pantech’s 4G modem can head on over to Verizon Wireless’s support page to download the appropriate drivers for official Mac support.

In the past, users have found unofficial workarounds to get Pantech’s modem to work on a Mac. Now, Mac users, including those who sport the MacBook Air, MacBook, and MacBook Pro, can enjoy faster mobile broadband speeds, and as Verizon says, “rule the air.”

Verizon promises speeds of 10 times faster than 3G speeds on its next-generation mobile broadband network. The carrier is promising download speeds of between 5-10 Mbps and upload speeds of 2-5 Mbps. In reality, I found that Verizon had under-promised and over-delivered on its 4G speeds; in real-life testing, I find that download speeds were hovering on average of 7-15 Mbps and upload speeds were regularly in excess of 5 Mbps.

Verizon iPhone 4 to Double as Mobile Hotspot is a post by Kevin Purcell from Notebooks.com.

Verizon and Apple announced that the iPhone 4 is coming to the carrier February 10 with one feature that trumps what AT&T is offering – a mobile hotspot built-in. A mobile hotspot is a device that shares a wireless broadband Internet signal with, in this case up to 5 other devices. This means that while the iPhone 4 has a signal from Verizon’s 3G (also called EVDO) network, it can share that connection with a laptop via Wi-Fi, an iPad and three other devices while still being able to get a connection itself. The new high speed (4G) hotspots announced at CES 2011 from Sprint and Verizon were given our Best of CES award in the notebook accessory category. This iPhone will have similar functionality, but with the older 3G network.

After the announcement, Andy Inatko of the Chicago Sun Times and MacBreak Weekly asked a Verizon representative on hand during Twit.tv‘s live coverage of the event if the data package would be truly unlimited, framing it by asking if he could stream Netflix for 3 days straight without incurring other costs and the rep said he could. He also learned, and Tweeted, that it works via Bluetooth and USB. This makes sharing the iPhone 4′s Internet connection truly valuable. Unfortunately we also learned that the iPhone on Verizon will not work on LTE

LTE is a higher speed network offering speeds potentially up to ten times faster than Verizon’s 3G or EVDO network.

Having the hotspot feature on the iPhone 4 will make getting the most out of the data plan you’re already paying for much more convenient. One problem is that it could also deplete the phone’s battery faster. We will have to wait to see how much the iPhone 4′s battery will last with the feature turned on when it finally ships in February.

Best Buy recently offered a free Mi-Fi with the purchase of an iPad. People who took advantage will likely wish they hadn’t.

Will there be an iPhone on Verizon?

The first rumor is the phone coming to Verizon in the first place. There has been absolutely no confirmation from either Verizon or Apple up to this point. There has however been a lot of evidence promoting this rumor and we feel fairly certain that it will be coming. And if anyone is still wavering, would the official Verizon Twitter account sending out Tweets with an iPhone do it for you? TechCrunch revealed that a recent Tweet from @Verizon has the identifier for “Twitter for iPhone” as its source on a January 8th message.

Will Steve Jobs help with the announcement?

What is also interesting is that All Things Digital believes that Steve Jobs might be on hand to announce the new Verizon iPhone tomorrow. We love their graphic of Jobs head superimposed on the “can you hear me now” guy.

Will a white iPhone be part of the Verizon release?

A dramatic turn would be if, after all the details are given, Jobs shows up with a Verizon Wireless version of the Steve Jobs patented “one more thing” ends up being the announcement of the white iPhone that has heretofore been impossible. ZDNet has a post speculating that such an option might show up as part of the Verizon announcement.

Will the Verizon iPhone be a whole new piece of hardware or only slightly different?

There is some debate as to what form the new phone will take. But we are confident that it will be the same phone with the minor change that it is compatible with Verizon’s network. Some convincing reasoning for this view comes from this statement at Gizmodo:

The odds of Apple giving Verizon anything other than a CDMA version of the same iPhone 4 AT&T has are extremely low. If a new Apple product—say, the iPhone 5—were about to be loosed on us, you better believe it’d be Apple doing the unveiling, not Verizon.

They are not the only ones to say it and may not be the first, but that succinctly states a very reasonable position.

An AT&T customer service rep that we talked to implied that the Verizon version will be “an iPhone lite”. The person was vague about what they meant saying it would not have all the same features as the AT&T version.

Will the Verizon iPhone support LTE?

The real question is will it be LTE or just 3G with LTE to come. Our friend Sumocat at GottaBeMobiel says “Of course the Verizon iPhone will be LTE.” With all due respect to our friend who is usually right more often than not, there are a few good reasons to doubt an LTE iPhone on Verizon. First, Apple doesn’t seem to be jumping on the “latest greatest technology” bandwagon these days. Their refresh of the MacBook Air did not include the most up to date Intel chips and none of their computers have USB 3.0 yet. Second, LTE is very limited at this point geographically. Third, Apple likes to hold things back from customers to get them excited about the next iteration. It is possible this time around. That way, in a year or so when LTE is more ubiquitous, Jobs can say at an Apple event, “And now with LTE” to uproarious applause. Finally, LTE is harder on the battery according to some.

With two schools of thought about an LTE version, observers can judge for themselves after tomorrow’s announcement which prognosticators are more accurate.

Will the Verizon iPhone data plan have a cap?

A rumor that might make people who are not currently planning to jump ship to Verizon change their tune is an unlimited data plan. Wall Street Journal’s Spencer Ante is reporting that this is exactly what Verizon is going to do according to “a person familiar with the matter.” If the Verizon iPhone is exactly like the current iPhone 4 but with a CDMA or even LTE radio, an unlimited data plan for a similar price as AT&T’s capped plan could make it special enough to persuade even big AT&T fans into switching. The rumor’s sources is sufficiently vague enough for wriggle room, but the Wall Street Journal has a track record of not reporting things without some validation.

AT&T is playing a little hardball with Verizon. After the reports of an unlimited data cap came out, the AT&T PR director Larry Solomon said, “I’m not sure iPhone users are ready for life in the slow lane,” talking about Verizon’s CDMA network speed, which is slower than AT&T’s 3G. However, if the new phone is an LTE model, this will make Solomon’s statement sound foolish.

When will the Verizon iPhone come out?

The rumored release date ranges from late this month to early February. The original Wall Street Journal report said it would come by the end of January while Boy Genius reported that Apple has frozen vacation times during the period of Feb. 3-6, a good indicator of a big product release during that time. There is lots of talk of iPad 2 being announced soon as well, so that could also be the reason. However, Apple likes to follow yearly release date patterns for updated or refreshed products. The iPad’s original date was nearly two months later than this date. So if the vacation freeze is true, it is likely a result of the an iPhone being released for Verizon instead of the iPad 2.

How Much Does Verizon 4G Cost?

Verizon 4G LTE will be available in two plans, $50 for 5GB and $80 for 10GB with additional usage available at $10 for 1GB. Users will receive a notification when they reach 50%, 75% and 90% alerting them to their usage.

What Do I Need to Use Verizon 4G LTE?

Verizon 4G will make use of two modems, the Pantech UML290 and the LG VL600. Both of these modems will deliver 4G speeds in the 4G coverage areas and 3G connections in other areas with 3G coverage. The modems will be available for purchase on December 5th and will cost $99.

The only piece of information that was divulged was the company’s latest Galaxy S branded phone, the Samsung Continuum.

The Samsung Continuum has been rumored for quite some time now. There was even a hands-on video from Android Central a little less than a month ago. Finally, the phone is official and is quite unique, especially from the rest of Samsung’s Galaxy S lineup, thanks to a second display.

Essentially, the big features with this phone are the 1.8-inch Super AMOLED “ticker” secondary display and the grip sensors that are used to activate it.

The Ticker display can be used to show time, control your music, see status updates and more. For now there are a limited number of apps that can interact with the Ticker, but if it catches on we may see more Android Apps making use of the Samsung Continuum’s ticker to deliver info.

That is the term Verizon uses for a device they cannot name but is expected to cause a lot of demand at their retail locations.

The post linked above speculates that because Apple likes to announce new products on Tuesdays and they often do so with very short notice, that this could be the much anticipated and yet to be confirmed Verizon iPhone. However, an update said that one of their readers reminded them that the Motorola Droid Pro is supposed to be available for preorder on the same day, which seems much more likely. And now a leaked internal memo shows pricing for the Droid Pro ($179) and the Samsung Continuum ($199) makes it even more likely that the “Iconic Device” is not the iPhone but likely the Droid Pro.

If you are planning to buy an iPhone this week but really wish you could get one for use with Verizon, it would be wise to at least wait till next Tuesday and if you can hold off till January, that might be wise as well, since there are plenty of rumors that it will become reality at that time.

Samsung Galaxy Tab for $600 on November 11 from Verizon is a post by Kevin Purcell from Notebooks.com.

There has been a lot of anticipation over the Samsung Galaxy Tab, an Android tablet with a 7-inch touch screen display and 1GHz processor. We now finally have a date and initial price information from Samsung and Verizon Wireless.

November 11 the Tab will be available for $599 without a contract making it $100 more than the Apple iPad which is its biggest competitor. For a 1GB data plan from Verizon customers will have to also pay an extra $20/month.

The Tab will come pre-installed with typical Verizon mobile apps like V CAST Music, Song ID, VZ Navigator as well as other Android apps like the Kindle app and the game Let’s Golf. For more info go to their coming soon” page at VZW.

The $100 price premium over the iPad might be justified since the Tab does have a camera on both the front and back and also plays Flash content.

If you are stoked about reading more about the Tab, a user guide for the device was leaked and can be downloaded now.
