Lenovo, throwing its hat into the 3D laptop ring, has just released its new IdeaPad Y560d. However, Lenovo differentiated its new 3D laptop from those being released by Toshiba, Asus, and others. What really sets this 3D laptop apart from the others?

Utilizing TriDef’s 3D technology, the IdeaPad Y560d is able to convert 2D content into 3D. How does it pull that off? The new IdeaPad has a specially coated screen, TriDef software, and unique polarizing glasses. Another plus is that you can create 3D photos using TriDef’s Photo Transformer. This same technology is built into the Acer Aspire 5738DG. The only downfall is that this laptop does not support 3D Blu-ray content, making you choose near-limitless standard definition 3D-content with the IdeaPad, or limited 3D Blu-ray content with other 3D-enabled laptops, such as the Toshiba Satellite 665 3D Edition.

Looking past the 3D capabilities or lack-there-of, let’s dive into the specs of Lenovo’s new IdeaPad Y560d:

15.6-inch HD widescreen

Up to an Intel Core i7 processor featuring Turbo Boost Technology

Up to 8GB of DDR3 RAM

Up to 750GB HDD

ATI Radeon HD5730 1GB graphics card

JBL-designed speakers with Dolby Home Theater Surround Sound

Optional Blu-ray Disc drive

HDMI out

802.11n WiFi

Bluetooth

Ambient Light Sensor – Automatically dims the display based on distance from the display

SlideNav – touch sensitive slide bar application for easy desktop navigation

The Lenovo Y560d will be available by the end of June, with pricing starting at $1199.99.

The upcoming Acer Aspire 5738DG is the first commercial notebook to come equipped with a 3D display which Acer is calling ‘TriDef’ (see what they did there?). The screen is most likely using a stereoscopic screen as it requires the user to wear the included polarized glasses in order to view 3D content using the notebook, but don’t worry, said glasses aren’t your standard cheapo cardboard and plastic red/blue glasses. Acer says that the in spectacles are sporty and stylish”, now all you need to do is decide whether or not you trust Acer’s sense of fashion…. Luckily, used without glasses, the notebook’s screen functions just like one would expected if it lacked a 3D display.

PCMag has gone hands-on with the yet released Aspire 5738DG and let’s us know how the display really functions. PCMag’s article can’t seem to stay away from the work gimmick” which in itself should make you realize that 3D displays are not the wave of the future. Though at least they say that the screen manages to provide a somewhat worthwhile experience, with (supported) games seeming to benefit the most from the 3D feature. Aside from the 3D display, the 5738DG is decidedly ordinary. At least it won’t cost too much. The 5738DG is a budget desktop replacement laptop and should be available for around $700. The following is a brief list of specs, and you can find a more inclusive list on Acer’s 5738DG product page.

2.2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo CPU

4GB of RAM

500GB 5400 RMP HDD

15.6” 1366×768 3D display
