The Toshiba Satellite L655D-S5164RD is a 15.6″ quad core consumer notebook that is aimed at users with a need for a lot of processor power, but it is limited in its ability to game by a rather meager video card. If you are looking for a notebook that packs some power in the processor department and you aren’t too concerned about all day battery life or the ability to game then this notebook might be a good fit for you.

Toshiba Satellite L655D-S5164RD Quick Specs:

The Toshiba Satellite L655D S5164 notebook we have in for review has a 1.8GHz AMD Athlon II Quad Core mobile processor and an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4250GPU with 256MB RAM. The notebook has 4GB DDR# RAM and a 640GB hard drive as well as a DVD burner. Teh 15.6″ display has a 1366 x 768 resolution and includes a built-in webcam.

Who is the Toshiba Satellite L655D-S5164RD For?

The Satellite L655D-S5164 is a notebook that is designed for a user that needs a quad-core processor to get work done and doesn’t mind the tradeoffs in battery life and a loud fan. This system isn’t going to be a good fit for users who mainly want to surf the web while watching TV as the fan will be too loud to enjoy your show.

Toshiba Satellite L655D-S5164RD Hands On Video:

Toshiba Satellite L655D-S5164RD Build and Design:

Overall the build and design of the Toshiba Satellite L655D-S5164 is pretty nice. We like the look of the red which is striking, but not overpowering. The lid is glossy, which does mean that you will leave behind some fingerprints, but the pattern does a good job of disguising many of them.

The deck and the palmrest are also nice looking with the same red as the lid and the overall build of the notebook feels very sturdy. The lid has a slight flex when you apply pressure, but the base did not have any noticeable flex when we stressed it.

The hinges on the notebook are fairly sturdy in the open position, but when closed the notebook suffers from the common Toshiba loose lid symptom which affects many of the Satellite models we have tested recently. This isn’t a deal breaker, but we wish the lid would stay closed tighter.

Toshiba Satellite L655D-S5164RD Features:

The Toshiba Satellite L655D-S5164 is best defined by the inclusion of a quad-core processor, which isn’t very common in consumer notebooks, but as we found out while using the notebook, the overall performance doesn’t deliver what we would expect from a quad-core processor.

Toshiba Satellite L655D-S5164RD Display:

The L655D has a 15.6″ display that is glossy like almost every consumer notebook. The 1366x 768 resolution is average, but it is sufficient for this notebook, allowing enough usable area for most users and supporting 720P HD video playback,.

Viewing angles are also pretty good side to side and vertical, which is important because the display doesn’t open as much as we would like. This won’t be an issues if you use the notebook on a table or desk, but if you use it on your lap often, you will probably wish for a larger opening angle.

Toshiba Satellite L655D-S5164RD Keyboard and Touchpad:

The keyboard on the Toshiba Satellite L655D-S5164 is pretty decent, though it is an older style keyboard and there is a very small spacebar. The key surface has a nice feel to it and the travel and spacing is also pretty good. We like that Toshiba left most of the keys sizing correct. We do wish that the spacebar was a bit bigger, but we were able to adjust after extended use. There is a dedicated number pad which anyone ho works with numbers will appreciate. We like the extra space between the keyboard and the number pad which means you won’t accidentally hit numbers while trying to press the Enter or Backspace keys.

The mousepad has a somewhat small mousing surface, that is blended into the palmrest area, and is flanked by two large dedicated mouse buttons. The mouse supports multitouch gestures like two finger scroll and pinch to zoom. Overall the trackpad performance was OK with good sensitivity and the responsive multitouch gestures. The two finger scroll was a bit jerky at times, but usable. The pinch to zoom worked better than we have seen on many Windows notebooks. We do wish that the mousepad surface extended to the edges of the buttons, but in the end this is a small issue.

We do like that there is a dedicated mousepad on/off switch right above the mousepad. This is handy for users who have trouble moving the mouse with their palm during long typing sessions. We didn’t have issues with palm movement on this model, but like to see these buttons on notebooks.

Toshiba Satellite L655D-S5164RD Processor and Performance:

With a quad-core processor, you wold expect a notebook that would be hard to keep up with, but in the end it was the L655D that had trouble keeping up with our applications. The processor has enough power mind you, but not what we would expect from a quad-core processor. Thanks to the limiting graphics option, you can’t even draw on the quad-core CPU to handle gaming.

Toshiba Satellite L655D-S5164RD Multimedia and Gaming:

For watching multimedia such as Hulu or Netflix the L655D-S5164 has enough power, but you won’t be playing any games on the ATI Radeon GPU which only has a paltry 256MB of RAM. We tried to play Just Cause 2 which is playable on the new 2nd Gen Intel Core i platform with integrated graphics, but we had to give up after the intro animation couldn’t even render correctly on low settings.

Toshiba Satellite L655D-S5164RD Audio and Speakers

The notebook does deliver a surprisingly good audio experience for watching movies or listening to music even though it has standard stereo speakers. This is thanks to Dolby Advanced Audio which helps to deliver a sound that is loud enough to use without external speakers at a decent quality. We did notice that the mid-range could get a bit muddy at times, but overall it is a decent sound system — and it is loud enough to overpower the fan.

Toshiba Satellite L655D-S5164RD Heat and Noise

The Satellite L655D did get little warm while we used it on our lap, but not enough tat we absolutely needed a laptop cooling pad. The palmrest and the keyboard did not get noticeably warm during standard use.

The cool-ish temperatures are thanks to the heavy duty fan found along the left side of the notebook which runs almost all the time, even when you are just browsing the web. The fan is loud enough to be noticeable while trying to watch TV, even to the person sitting next to you.

Toshiba Satellite L655D-S5164RD Battery Life

The Toshiba Satellite L655D-S5164 has a 6-cell battery which lasted just over 3 hours in our battery test which visits popular websites over WiFi with the screen set at 40% brightness. This is about standard for an AMD Quad Core notebook, but it is low by most of today’s standards and is a factor to consider.

Toshiba Satellite L655D-S5164RD Connectivity:

The Satellite L655D has a pretty standard collection of ports, drives and connectivity options including those pictured below and WiFi b/g/n.

Left side: Vents, Ethernet, VGA, eSATA/USB 2.0, HDMI, Mic, Headphone

Right Side: USB 2.0, USB 2.0, DVD Drive, Power, Kensington

Front: SD Card

Back: Battery

Toshiba Satellite L655D Webcam:

As you can see in our sample image, the L655D’s webcam does deliver a bright image, but we found the colors to be a bit lacking and the 640×480 image also left a bit to be desired. If you only do occasional video chat’s this camera will suffice, but if you use ti everyday to keep in touch with friends or coworkers you will want to look for an external HD webcam.

Toshiba Satellite L655D Software:

The Toshiba L655D-S5164 comes with a decent amount of good software pre-installed including Microsoft Office Starter, Chrome web browser, Skype and some Toshiba items like Toshiba Reel Time which lets you get access toe recent documents, App Place which gives you a place to get software and Toshiba Book Place which gives you access to an eBook store. Another nice touch is the inclusion of facial recognition software.

One tool we didn’t like was the Norton Internet Security app, which asked us to upgrade way too often and as usual does a good job of hiding the close and no options on popups.

Toshiba Satellite L655D-S5164RD Value:

Based on the overall package, the Toshiba Satellite L655D-S5164 isn’t a bad notebook, but the performance and price of $649 don’t line up, resulting in a rather expensive notebook for what you get.

Toshiba Satellite L655D-S5164RD Conclusion:

The Toshiba Satellite has several standout features, but in the end the lackluster performance, loud fan and high price tag leave this notebook as one we would be hard to recommend at $649. The build quality is nice and most of the features are there, but in the end the average performance leaves us with an average notebook at a premium price.

If you like the look of this notebook, you should look for the lower spec’d and better priced versions of the Toshiba Satellite L650 which can be found at Toshiba.com and on Amazon for under $500. These notebooks don’t have quad-core processors, but look to offer a better value.

Pros:

Nice Keyboard

Cons:

Low Performance for Quad Core

Loud Fan

High Price

Small Spacebar

The Toshiba L655D-S5164RD comes with a 1.8GHz AMD Athlon II Quad Core mobile processor, 4GB RAM a 640GB hard drive and a 15.6″ display with 1366×768 resolution. The Satellite L655D-S5614RD also has a webcam, microphone and a DVD burner rounding out the notebook.

So far the L655D, with a quad core processor has handled all the normal tasks we’ve thrown at it like web surfing, working in Office documents (including large linked spreadsheets) and viewing video. We’lll be putting the processor through the paces over the coming weeks to see how it handles video processing and even gaming.

Toshiba Satellite L655D-S5164RD Video Overview and First Impressions:

Initial thoughts on build quality are pretty good, but we did notice that the lid doesn’t stay completely closed on its own when you are carrying it near the hinge. This is a common issue we see on notebooks in this price range, and can be addressed by changing how you hold your notebook, but still worth mentioning. The overall build quality felt pretty good after a few days of use.

The mouse is the highlight of our first impressions, stealing the show in terms of performance. The mousepad is adequately sized and has a nice feel to it, almost invisible like we saw on several Samsung notebooks, but the real reason we like it is that it works. Two finger scrolling is smooth and gestures work without the hesitation we commonly see on Windows notebooks. In short, this is a mousepad we would expect to see on a higher priced notebook, and wish we encountered more often.

We’ll be putting the Toshiba Satellite L655D-S5164RD through its paces over the next few weeks and posting our full review of the latest addition to the Satellite family. If you want us to test a certain application or activity, leave us a note in the comments below.

At CES 2011 Toshiba announced a refresh of many of its higher end laptops including the Satellite A660 and M640 Multimedia systems. The biggest news is the inclusion of the new second generation Intel Core family of processors and Intel WiDi 2.o wireless display technology in these systems from Toshiba.

All of these models are entertainment notebooks designed for people who like to view multimedia content and play games in addition to day-to-day activities. They come with GeForce GT 500 graphics with Optimus technology for adapting to high performance needs but also can power down for longer battery life. There will also be Blu-ray drives on some models.

The Satellite A660 comes with option of the Intel Core i3 or Core i5 dual-core or Core i7 quad-core processors. The displays are 15.6-inch and they come in multiple colors. They will be available in February starting at $684.99.

The Satellite M640 has most of the same features except for a 14-inch display and only comes with the Intel Core i5 dual-core processor. It too will be available in February starting at 749.99.

Best Buy will be selling a 15.6″ Toshiba Satellite C655D-S5089 laptop on Black Friday for just $189.99 This may be the first laptop to sell out on Black Friday as it’s the only full-sized laptop priced at under $200 at Best Buy on Black Friday. This Toshiba Satellite laptop is normally priced at $449.99, which means Black Friday buyers will save $260, or nearly 58%.

Best Buy’s doors will open at 5am on Black Friday, but if you plan on getting a Toshiba Satellite C655D-S5089 you’ll have to line up much, much earlier. According to Best Buy’s ad, there will be a minimum of just three Toshiba C655D-S5089 laptops at each store. While there’s a limit of one Satellite C655D-S5089 per customer, it’s entirely possible that the first three folks in line at Best Buy will snag them. Some Best Buy locations will have many more Toshiba Satellite C655D-S5089′s on hand, but there are no gaurantees that your local Best Buy store will have one waiting for you.

The Toshiba Satellite C655D-S5089 is an entry-level consumer notebook. It’s full sized and has all of the standard features you’d expect on a laptop, including a DVD drive. The display measures 15.6″ (measured diagonally), which is the most common size in consumer laptops. The Toshiba Satellite C655D-S5089 isn’t incredibly heavy, but still not light enough to tote around all day.

If you’re on a very tight budget and looking for a basic laptop this will be your best option on Black Friday at Best Buy. There are several other netbooks and notebooks selling for under $250 on Black Friday, but we haven’t found anything that can beat this Toshiba Satellite from a value perspective. Most PCs priced under $250 on Black Friday are netbooks, which are more portable, but much less powerful. The 15.6″ eMachines eMEs28-2325 from Wal-mart will cost $198, which is on par with the Toshiba Satellite.

Here is a video walkthrough of a version of a Toshiba Satellite C655D series laptop.

Toshiba Satellite C655D-S5089 Specs and Details

The Toshiba Satellite C655D-S5089 is a retail model of the Toshiba Satellite C655D series. You can compare this laptop to any Toshiba C655D series laptop, even those sold by retailers other than Best Buy. This series is not exclusive to Best Buy, but the specific model (Satellite C655D-S5089) may be difficult to find elsewhere.

The Satellite C655D-S5089 comes withan AMD V-series processor that runs at 2.3GHz. While AMD produces some very powerful processors, this is not one of them. This processor is sold with affordable laptops and is designed to handle most common computing tasks.

In the storage department, the Toshiba Satellite C655D-S5089 comes with a 320GB hard drive. That’s plenty of space for dozens of HD videos, hundreds of thousands of photos and all but the larges music collections. Some laptops come with 500GB or larger drives these days and you may want to opt for one of them if you like trucking around all of your multimedia at once.

The Satellite C655D-S5089 comes with 3GB of memory, which is plenty to run Windows 7 and most applications. If you’re going to run several multimedia applications at once you may need more memory, but memory upgrades are relatively affordable these days. The standard 3GB of memory will serve most students and home users just fine.

One red flag that caught our eyes is that the Toshiba Satellite C655D-S5089 does NOT come with a built-in webcam. Webcams are pretty much standard issue these days. You will not be able to make video calls or take pictures with a Satellite C655D-S5089 unless you attach a USB webcam. The lack of a webcam may be a dealbreaker for some Black Friday shoppers.

Another thing Black Friday shoppers should know before buying the Satellite C655D-S5089 is that it is not well-suited for playing the latest video games. It comes with ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4250 graphics, a solution that will be fine for playing back content, but is underwhelming to play graphically intensive video games.

While the Toshiba Satellite C655D-S5089 does have a decent assortment of ports, including a VGA port, it does NOT have an HDMI port. This is yet another deal breaker for many consumers, whom often want the flexibility of displaying content from their PCs onto their HDTVs, all of which come with HDMI ports.

The Toshiba Satellite E205-S1904 features a 2.2GHz Intel Core i5 processor, a 14-inch LED-backlit display, 4GB of DDR3 RAM, a 500GB hard drive, and Intel Wireless Display technology, all coming together to form a solid notebook option for students that are soon heading back to school.

This notebook is considered a premium thin and light notebook because of the inclusion of one of Intel’s latest processors, its slim profile, and its weight of 5.1 pounds. With its powerful Intel Core i5 processor and 4GB of DDR3 RAM, the notebook can handle most tasks and applications students may throw at it. All the basic functionality, such as web surfing, email, and viewing photos and video, will not be an issue. Even task such as photo editing and casual gaming should work just fine. Modern gaming may be a little too much for this notebook, due to its integrated graphics.

Some common complaints about the Toshiba Satellite E205-S1904 include the presence of useless software, poor sound quality, and uncomfortable touch pad and buttons. Most of these issues are fairly minute, and may pale in comparison to the notebook’s many strengths.
The Intel Wireless Display technology that is included allows the laptop’s screen to be wirelessly transmitted to a HDTV. Also, the Toshiba Satellite E205-S1904 is very lightweight and achieves up to 6 hours of battery life. Other positive aspects of the Toshiba Satellite E205-S1904 include a backlit keyboard for late night studying, Toshiba’s Fusion finish for a stylish look with less fingerprints, and AntiVirus + AntiSpyware software.

This Toshiba notebook is a Best Buy Exclusive and part of the Toshiba Satellite line up.

The Toshiba Satellite L505D-GS6000 features a 2.2GHz AMD Turion II Dual-Core processor, a 16-inch Widescreen HD display, 4GB of DDR2 RAM, 320GB hard drive, ATI Radeon 4200 discrete graphics, and a stylish Fusion finish. All of these aspects come together to form a notebook suitable for most college students’ needs. Due to the 16-inch screen, Toshiba was able to include a dedicated numeric keypad, making this notebook great for working in Excel.

This notebook is considered a budget notebook due to its mobile processor. However, don’t let the budget word fool you. This processor is capable of handling most tasks that students would perform. The processor, when paired with its discrete graphics and 4GB of RAM, could handle web surfing, photo editing, modern gaming, and working on Microsoft Office documents. The 320GB hard drive should provide ample space for all of your photos, videos, and music.

Though photo editing should run smoothly on the Toshiba Satellite L505D-GS6000, running multiple Adobe applications at the same time, such as Photoshop and Illustrator, may diminish the notebook’s overall performance due to the DDR2 RAM and mobile processor. But, for a budget notebook, the Toshiba Satellite L505D-GS6000 is definitely on the higher end.

The Toshiba Satellite L505D-GS6000 is quite heavy and large when compared to other thin and light notebooks. At 6 pounds and 1.6″ thick, this notebook is not ultra-portable. If you are willing to spend $100 more, the Toshiba Satellite L645D-S4030 is a little more portable as well as powerful. This 14-inch notebook is 1.5″ thick and weighs 5 pounds.
Some common complaints regarding the Toshiba Satellite L505D-GS6000 include poor speaker and webcam quality, and short 2 hour and 55 minute battery life. Though it does feature Toshiba’s textured Fusion finish, which is designed to resist fingerprints as well as dissipate heat, many customers complain that it actually attracts fingerprints.

For students heading back to school, now’s the time to start looking at new notebooks which have been designed with students in mind. The best part about these offerings from Toshiba is that they aren’t just designed with what students need to do, but also with the price range of students as well.

The Toshiba Satellite T200 series is an ultra-thin notebook that comes in red, white or black and weighs less than 4 pounds. The Satellite T210 is an 11.6 notebook powered by an AMD processor and begins at $469 while the slightly larger Satellite T230 is a 13.3″ notebook with both Intel and AMD processor options and starts at $549.

You can find several configurations at major retailers as well as direct from Toshiba. These options would be good for a student with average computing needs like email, browsing the web and writing papers.

The Toshiba Satellite L600 series notebooks offer a bit more power under the hood to provide a more rich experience that includes multi-tasking and HD video consumption. The Satellite L630 series is a collection of 13.3″ notebooks that start at $619 and can be configured with an Intel Core i5 processor and 4GB of RAM for $779. The Satellite L640 is a 14″ notebook that offers numerous Intel and AMD options starting at $515 and going up to $799 for an AMD Phenom II Triple Core processor model.

The Toshiba Satellite C600 notebooks are the cheapest starting at $449, but they still include everything the average student needs — a big screen and an average processor coupled with enough memory and hard drive space to see the student through a few years before upgrading. The Satellite C650 notebooks are not as powerful as the L600 notebooks, but the price reflects that and for a student on a budget these models are worth a look. The Satellite C640 series is a slightly more expensive 14″ notebook that used a Dual Core AMD Athlon II processor and comes with 3GB of RAM.

Toshiba is announcing a number of new notebooks computers today including the all-new Satellite L600 series of everyday value” notebook computers. This series of Toshiba notebooks will be offered by many major retailers. We expect to see the L600 series of notebooks sold as Back to School and Black Friday specials.

We’re giving consumers the broadest choice ever of mainstream laptops to meet their computing needs and budgets,” said Carl Pinto, vice president of product development for Toshiba.

The Toshiba Satellite L600 is available in four different sizes.

The 13-inch Toshiba Satellite L635 is designed to be a very mobile and lightweight notebook that has more than a netbook for $619.99 in base configuration

Toshiba’s 14-inch Satellite L645 is also aimed at the mobile user needing a light portable notebook starting at $519.99

The 15.6-inch L655 is a more versatile computer for the average user and starts at $569.99

And the 17-inch L675 is a large desktop replacement PC meant for more powerful needs and will be starting at $599.99

The Toshiba Satellite L600 Series will be available June 20 at most major retailers and direct from Toshibadirect.com. The prices listed above are all base configuration costs and do not include optional upgrades or more expensive configurations.

Another choice will be between Intel and AMD processors in this affordable line. Most of the manufacturers are adding AMD choices to their lineups this summer. On the Intel side the computers will come with either a dual-core Intel Core i3 or a Core i5 with TurboBoost. If you choose the models with an AMD processor you can choose from the AMD Athlon II or Turion II dual-core processors or the Phenom II triple or quad-core processors.

Other hardware choices include the hard drives offered (250GB to 500GB) and memory (up to 4GB).

On the outside, Toshiba’s L600 series will be available with their glossy Fusion® Finish with the new Helios pattern in a choice of Steel Grey, Black, Red, White or Brown.

Other features of the L600 include across the series are the following:

Standard LED-backlit HD TruBright widescreen display with native 720p HD resolution and a 16:9 aspect ratio

Built-in webcam

DVD drive

802.11n Wireless networking

Impact sensors in the hard drives to prevent data loss if dropped

DDR3 memory

Premium flat keyboard

Wide mult-touch touchpad

Models with 15.6-inch or larger displays will have a full size keyboard with a separate keypad

Each system meets EnergyStar 5.0 standards. Toshiba was environmentally conscious in their designs. They have power saving features which help reduce energy consumption.

As for software, Toshiba has their Media Controller application which enables users to share files, pictures, music and video over Wi-Fi to other PCs running Windows or to the Xbox 360 via a drag-and-drop interface. ReelTime is a tool for finding files based on when they were last accessed. It also offers previews of files and filters them by date.
