Toshiba has torn apart what you think a $900 notebook should look like and delivered the Best Buy exclusive Toshiba Portege z835.

The Portege z835 is an ultrabook, which means it is as thin as can be and lighter than a MacBook Air. Surprisingly, Best Buy and Toshiba are able to sell this ultrabook at a price that is competitive with the MacBook Air and an attractive notebook for students, travelers and anyone who wants a two-pound notebook.

The model I have in for review is the Toshiba Portege Z835-P330, which is available exclusively at Best Buy. This model has enough power for most consumers looking for an affordable light and thin notebook, but those looking to do video editing or processor intensive tasks will be best served by a different notebook with a more powerful processor.

Who is the Toshiba Portege z835 for?

I would recommend the Portege z835 to students and frequently traveling home users, but would be wary of recommending it to a business user or road warrior. The small package means you can take it anywhere around town without feeling any extra weight in your bag, but it has much more power than a netbook. The price is also attractive.

Toshiba Portege z835 Hands On Video

Design

The Portege z835 has a magnesium alloy case which helps provide an incredibly strong base to the notebook. This does more than help with the overall feel of the device, combined with the internal honeycomb support you get a very solid typing experience as well. The case is a dark grey, that looks like brushed metal, but this is just a finish. Unfortunately the rubber foot of another laptop was all it took to rub some of the finish off on the corner of the lid, which makes me worry about what this will look like after a year on the road.

Another concern is the flexibility of the lid, which can be bent to some pretty nasty angles thanks to the super thin frame. After several months of use I am less worried that I will break it, but it is enough of a concern to give me pause. Thankfully the keys are recessed, which should help keep the display from getting small key marks on it over time.

A Magnesium alloy case provides strength without tons of weight.

The Portege z835 weighs in at weighs 2.5 pounds and is just .65 inches thick. That’s lighter and thinner than the MacBook Air 13. Trust me, you’ll notice the light weight of this laptop when you pick it up. The good news is you won’t notice it when you have it in your backpack.

Even though Toshiba made this notebook thin, the company didn’t skimp on port selection. There’s an SD Card slot, headphone and microphone connections as well as USB 3.0 on the sides. On the back of the Portege z835 you’ll find an HDMI port, VGA, Ethernet and two USB 2.0 ports, one which can charge your smartphone or gadget while the notebook is asleep.

A look at the size of the Toshiba Portege z835.

If you want to upgrade any of the internals, you’ll need to take the entire bottom of the notebook off, but Toshiba has left the screws out and open so it won’t be a challenge.

I’m a big fan of the look that Toshiba used on this model. Instead of copying the MacBook Air, you get an attractive looking notebook that has a style of its own.

Keyboard and TouchPad

The Toshiba Portege z835 has one of the nicest keyboards I have used outside of the Lenovo ThinkPad line. The keyboard has great support throughout, which minimizes the mushiness you often find in thin notebooks. Toshiba has also done a good job of spacing the keys and giving them decent travel. I do wish that they keys had a bit more of a curve to them, but overall this is a very nice keyboard, one that earns extra points thanks to the fact that it is backlit for working in dark environments.

The Toshiba Portege z835 has a backlit keyboard.

The only real issue I had with the keyboard is a common one on 13 inch notebooks. Toshiba placed the DEL, Home, PgUp, PgDn and End keys on the far right of the keyboard. This means that you’ll often hit the wrong key if you are trying to touch type fast. Even after extended use I haven’t adjusted to the key placement. You can change the key assignments, but I wish there was no need to change these settings.

The touchpad on the Portege z835 is OK. If you are coming form a larger notebook you will need to adjust to the size of the small trackpad, but users will appreciate the dedicated mouse buttons which offer good tactile feedback. The mouse surface is smooth and offers precise mousing. The two finger scrolling was jerky when I began using this notebook, but Toshiba must have updated the software along the road because it is much smoother now.

Display

Toshiba has a nice 13.3 inch display inside the Portege z835. The screen has a 1366 x 768 resolution, which dictates how much you can see on a screen. The higher the resolution, the more of a webpage or email you can see without scrolling. I would prefer a higher resolution, but most consumers are used to this bare minimum resolution. If you want a high-resolution ultrabook, you’ll actually need to look at the MacBook Air.

The Toshiba Portege z835 has a 13.3 inch display.

The display offers very good viewing angles, which will make it possible to share the display with one or two other users while sharing stats or a presentation at a coffee shop. Colors are rich, though they do take a hit when you get too far to the right or left.

In most cases you’ll be using this notebook by yourself, so that won’t be an issue. The display proved great for watching videos on Hulu Plus and Netflix.

Features

The Portege z835 has a handful of extra features that users will appreciate. These extras are simple to use, though you will need to buy an extra adapter if you want to use Intel WiDi.

EcoBoost – Toshiba includes a button that turns on power saver settings that sill cut down on your power consumption. This can help extend battery life. The fact that this is a simple button push, means you may actually use it on a regular basis.

Webcam – There is a webcam built into the system with a single microphone. The webcam is nothing fancy, but will get the job done for Skype calls and Google Hangouts.

Intel Wireless Display - This free program allows you to stream your display to an HDTV with a $99 adapter.

Performance, Battery Life and Multimedia

The Portege z835 is a consumer specific version of the Portege z835, which is Toshiba’s first ultrabook. Powering the thin and light notebook is a 1.4GHz Intel Core i3 2nd gen processor, 4GB RAM and a 128GB SSD. This configuration provides enough power for most home users, students and business travelers. I would not choose the Portege z835 if I needed to edit a lot of video or if I want to play games.

I commonly used Google Chrome, a browser that Toshiba installs for you, to surf 10-20 websites at once, while using other programs and streaming music without any issues. The system was able to stream video from Hulu and Netflix without any trouble, including full screen.

While I streamed the latest episode of House, the system was a little warm by the end, but not so hot that I couldn’t keep the system on my lap if I wanted to.

The Toshiba Portege z835 has a faint fan noise while on.

One issue I found with the z835 is a faint fan noise that you can hear anytime the machine is powered on, even with no programs running. If you have music or a TV show on you won’t hear the fan, but if you like to work in silence this noise could get annoying pretty quick.

The speakers on the z835 aren’t great, but the small speaker slots on the front of the device deliver sound loud enough to fill a small room or hotel suite. There is no real depth to the music, but at the same time there is no distortion. If you want premium audio you’ll need a pair of speakers for when you are at home.

The battery life on the Portege z835 is rated for over 8 hours, but using the LAPTOP Magazine Battery Test (constant web surfing over Wi-Fi with the screen set at 40%) the notebook lasted just short of 6 hours. All said, 5 hours and 56 minutes of battery life isn’t bad for a notebook this thin and light. If you cut back on the brightness and use eco mode you should be able to stretch longer.

Toshiba Portege z835 vs. The Competition

The Portege Z835 I reviewed has a 1.3Ghz Intel Core i3 processor, 4GB RAM, a 128GB SSD and a 13.3 inch display with 1366 x 768 resolution. The notebook has one USB 3.0 port, to USB 2.0 ports and includes HDMI, Ethernet and VGA connectivity.

Toshiba Portege z835 vs MacBook Air

Toshiba Portege Z835 vs. Lenovo IdeaPad U400

The IdeaPad U400 offers a comparable experience for the same $900 price point. The U400 offers a faster processor, more RAM and dedicated graphics, but it is also heavier and thicker than the Portege Z835. The U400 has similar battery life and for this price is worth considering before you purchase a new notebook. The U400 is not an Ultrabook, but it is still thin and light with good performance.

Toshiba Portege Z835 vs. Lenovo IdeaPad U300s

While we saw a number of Ultrabooks at CES 2012, not many are available for sale yet. Of those that are out, the IdeaPad U300S offers something worth looking at. The IdeaPad U300s also has a faster processor and similar battery life, but it has a much higher price tag. At $1,499, the IdeaPad U300s, users will want to make sure that they need the extra power of the U300s to justify paying nearly double the price.

Toshiba Portege Z835 vs. MacBook Air

Another competitor is the MacBook Air 13 inch. The MacBook Air starts at $1,299 with similar specs, but you also get a much higher screen resolution and slightly longer battery life. The MacBook Air 13 inch has proven much better for multimedia editing thanks to the built in iMovie software.

The Bottom Line

Despite the fan noise and flexible display frame, the Portege z835 is a solid ultrabook offering for the average consumer. If you want a thin and light notebook that won’t break the bank, Toshiba’s first ultrabook is a stellar choice. Thanks to the inclusion of backlit keys, all the ports you need and a super thin package the Portege z835 offers an attractive value for the mainstream consumer.

Toshiba showed off the Toshiba Qosmio F755 Glasses Free 3D at CES 2012 gaming notebook at CES 2012 this week, which is the retail version of a glasses free 3D notebook we saw back at CES 2012.

Unlike the prototype, the Toshiba Qosmio F755 doesn’t have a huge hump on the back to house the technology needed to make glasses free 3D a reality. Switching between 2D and 3D modes is as simple as pushing a button at the top of the device. No glasses to find and charge.

When you flip over to 3D the same webcam you use to Skype will track your face, and adjust the image so that you see 3D. You can take a look at the Qosmio F755 Glasses Free 3D in the video below, but you won’t see the 3D through your screen.

The 3D experience is designed to be used by yourself, so don’t plan your glasses free 3D gaming party just yet.

The Toshiba Qosmio F755 glasses free 3D gaming notebook has an Intel Core i7 processor, 4GB RAM, is powered by an NVIDIA GeForce GT540M GPU and has a Blu-Ray burner.

The Toshiba Qosmio F755 is available now, and retails at a stomach-able $1,499.

It’s tough to deliver a thin and light notebook that doesn’t feel like it will snap apart in your hands.

In order to make the Toshiba Portege Z830 and Z835 strong and thin, Toshibput considerable time and thought into the internal layout of the notebook, the build materials and even the layout of the motherboard and components.

The key to the strength of the Toshiba Portege X830 is a honeycomb structure which Toshiba showed off on the showfloor at CES in a transparent model of the company’s latest Ultrabook. While they didn’t let us take photos of the internals, the layout of the honeycomb pattern was impressive.

In order to stay thin without giving you a mushy keyboard, the honeycomb pattern extends underneath the keyboard, but not in a haphazard way. Toshiba tells us that engineers spent a good deal of time figuring out where to place components on the circuit board so that any raised components bumped up where the honeycomb holes were.

Toshiba wouldn’t allow us to take photos of this demonstration, but if you look at the exploded illustration of the an Ultrabook from Intel, you can get an idea of what goes in to an Ultrabook.

Yesterday at New York Comicon attendees crowded into the DC Booth to play Batman: Arkham City, one of the most hotly anticipated games of the year. A followup to the kick-ass Batman: Arkham Asylum, this time around the gameplay is even more complex, as are the graphics.

3D may not be gaining as much traction with mainstream consumers as companies wish, but PC gamers are all over it. And with the announcement of the new 3D Vision 2 technology from Nvidia, it’s about to get even better.

3D Vision 2 glasses have larger lenses (20% increase in size) and better light blocking than the first generation. They still fit over many prescription glasses, so even those of us who don’t rock the contacts can experience an immersive 3D experience.

Nvidia’s LightBoost technology also brightens things up overall, so you’ll see more detail in the games you play as well as being able to find the keys on your keyboard without having to flip the glasses up.

Overall the glasses are just more comfortable to wear as well. And they still look good. 3D Vision 2 glasses will work with first gen 3D vision devices, so you won’t have to buy a completely new setup.

You may want to, anyway, as the technology is also in new 3D vision panels that allow for full HD 3D and reduced 3D ghosting (which is the cause of headaches when dealing with 3D media). Among the first notebooks to take advantage of 3D Vision 2 are the Toshiba Qosmio X770/X775 and Satellite P770/775 models, which comes bundled with a pair of the new glasses.

Full kits (glasses + emitter) will cost $149 and extra glasses alone are $99.

At Comicon yesterday I watched some con-goers play the Xbox version of Batman: Arkham City, which is still pretty sweet, but it wasn’t as awesome as playing with the 3D glasses on. I got to try this a few weeks ago and was really impressed with the technology. Utilizing the latest Nvidia GeForce GTX GPUs, PCs can take best advantage of DirectX 11 and GPU PhysX for fast, smooth, and detailed gameplay.

Batman is a good game for seeing the difference, as you not only have some incredibly detailed character CGI going on, but they also have to move swiftly and realistically. Plus, the environment has to be top notch as well. Thanks to Nvidia GPUs the CG world has a lot more intricate detail and depth, like Poison Ivy’s vines pulsating with creepy veins and energy.

Aside from that, there are over 500 games compatible with 3D Vision 2, including Portal 2, Duke Nukem Forever, and Fable III. And there are a slew a new games coming up built to work with 3D Vision 2.

If you’re a gamer, you need to try doing it in 3D. And among the current 3D choices for media, Nvidia has the most impressive technology I’ve seen in both the glasses and on the hardware side.

Ultrabooks are everywhere lately, and last night I got the chance to spend a few minutes with Toshiba’s entrant into this new category. The Portege Z830 definitely deserves the label “drool-worthy” if very thin, very light laptops are your thing. The 13-inch system weighs less than 2.5 pounds (lighter than your average 10-inch netbook) but doesn’t feel cheap thanks to the magnesium alloy chassis.

Being ultra thin (0.63-inches) and ultra light may attract the oohs and aahs, but you need more than that to make a successful notebook. I’m glad to see that the Z830 has a backlit keyboard, a feature I find myself wishing for more lately. Even better, Toshiba included plenty of ports: 1 USB 3.0, 2 USB 2.0, SD card slot, and full sized HDMI, VGA, and Ethernet ports. The company cleverly positioned most of these along the back to keep the clean, tapered look on the sides. Given this, the Z830 could potentially work as a person’s primary computer.

Inside the series will come with second generation Core I processors from Intel. Retail models will likely come with Core i3 or i5, but customers will have some configuration options if they order from Toshiba Direct. As of right now, the only storage option is a 128GB SSD.

Toshiba promises speedy boot up and wake times. The demo unit I saw last night delivered, going to sleep in about 5 seconds and waking in about 3. It opened applications in seconds and overall felt really snappy.

The one disappointment I noted was an alarming amount of flex in the lid. With the unit closed, I pressed down on it slightly and it bent inward. Granted, the one I saw was pre-production, thus doesn’t represent the finished product.

Being a netbook person, I couldn’t help but give the side-eye to my NC10 after holding this ultrabook. Here you get a bigger screen, more power, and more portability. Of course, you’ll pay more for it.

Toshiba hasn’t released firm pricing yet – right now they’re saying “under $1,000,” which could mean $999. That’s still less than the 13-inch MacBook Air’s starting price. Expect to see the Portege Z830 in November of this year, just in time for the holiday rush.

With students getting ready for school in the next couple of weeks, here are some suggestions for five hot laptops. Included are a:

budget Windows Notebook,

all around Windows system,

gaming powerhouse computer,

high-end Ultra-portable system,

and a high-end Powerhouse Money-Doesn’t-Matter system

Because your needs are different than the next student, it’s worth spending a decent amount of time to find a good notebook. We’ve covered student needs in a variety of articles, but this list includes a wide range of notebooks in a variety of prices. Returning upper class students may be interested in a more business centric notebook like these selections.

Budget Windows Notebook – Dell Vostro V131 – $499

The new Dell Vostro V131 looks like a really nice, inexpensive system for the budget minded student or parents who want long battery life. The base price is just $499, but for the model you would actually want to use it will cost closer to $700-$800. These are thin and light, with colorful options if you are into flair, or a basic black chassis if $30 is too much to part with for a touch of color.

The chiclet style keyboards often make for easier typing. With 4GB of RAM, 500GB of hard drive space and an optional Intel Core i5 processor, it has enough power for light gaming and creative content editing.

Windows Budget All-Rounder – HP DV6T Series – $599.99

If you need a little more than a budget system because you want more entertainment options, the HP DV6T series is a good all-rounder choice. The budget level starts at a penny under $600, but with some add-ons you will have a fairly powerful system that won’t break the bank.

I have an older version of this laptop and used it for a few years before handing it down to my son, who loves it. The system has the power to run most software, other than hard-core games. If you select some key upgrade options you can put together a really nice system for not a lot of money. We added the following to the base configuration at HP:

Intel Core i5 from an i3 for $50

AMD Radeon 6489M Graphics Card for $100

750GB 7200rpm hard drive from a 500GB 5400 rpm drive for $50

9-cell battery from 6-cell for $21 offering a promised 9.75 hours (6-7 likely)

The total, after the above upgrades, is $820.99. You can also bump the display resolution up to a full HD 1920×1080 and add a Blu-ray drive for a few hundred more.

This is a nice system that can serve as a jack-of-all trades computer that should be future-proof enough to last a student most of their high school or college career.

Windows Power User Gaming and Media System – Toshiba Qosmio F755 3D – $1,699

Do you like to play the latest and greatest games? Do you enjoy 3D Blu-ray movies? Toshiba put gamers and movie/music lovers in their cross hairs with the Qosmio F755 3D. The powerful laptop does glasses-free 3D movies thanks to a cool new face tracking technology making it the “first” glasses-free 3D laptop, according to Toshiba.

The built-in webcam tracks your face as you are viewing a 3D movie or game. The computer adjusts the images so that you can see both 2D and 3D content simultaneously. You can watch your favorite 3D Blu-ray movie, but the computer also transforms other movies into 3D too.

3D is cool, but the F755 offers more than that one trick. The 15.6″ entertainment computer comes with a high-end Intel Core i7 Sandy Bridge processor, which means the processor won’t be your bottleneck for any intense tasks. The 8GB of RAM and a fast 750GB hard drive should tear through games, video encoding and converting or processing huge RAW digital photographs.

The Harmon Kardon speakers should pump out some great Dolby sound. Hook this rig up to your HDTV via the HDMI out port and share the fun with friends. Electronista says it will be ready to chew up your credit card on August 16th. See the company’s Qosmio page after that date to find the system.

High-End Ultra-Portable – Apple MacBook Air 11″ – $999

Some students only want a nice looking laptop to write papers, take notes in class and surf the web with. Throw in a few light casual games, watching fun stuff on YouTube and what you need is the new Apple MacBook Air. The graphics processor on this system isn’t that powerful, but the CPU and flash storage drive make up for that weakness nicely. You can easily throw an 11″ MacBook Air into a book bag and whip it out at a moment’s notice to take notes or work on a group project in the library. The five-hour battery life keeps you going through most of your day. You can buy cheaper systems, but you can’t get a better ultra-portable. Throw in another two hundred bucks to get the one with 4GB of RAM and 128GB SSD and your student will be much happier.

The 13″ model costs more but might satisfy students who want to do more than just type documents or surf the web. I love my 13″ MacBook Air and use it for most of the tasks needed other than hardcore gaming. If you only want an 11″ model, get this one for $1,199. If you want to jump up to the 13″ model, I recommend this model for $1,299.

High-End Power Money Doesn’t Matter – Apple MacBook Pro 17″ – $2,499

For the student who wants to be able to do anything they could on a desktop on their laptop, we recommend the biggest MacBook Pro Apple makes. At 17″ it can serve as an entertainment hub in a dorm room. With the Intel Core i7 processor and 4GB of RAM it is ready for processor intensive tasks like making the next cinematic masterpiece. You can also frag bad guys with the best of them thanks to those specs plus the powerful AMD Radeon HD 6750M graphics processor with 1GB GDDR5 RAM. This screaming powerhouse ain’t cheap, but you won’t feel handcuffed by the specs your senior season if you bring this beast along your freshman year. I wouldn’t recommend this system for everyone, but for the student who wants a desktop replacement system and money is no object, you can’t beat he 17″ MacBook Pro.

A few recommendations: get 8GB of RAM for another $200. Add a $19 Apple Remote for making presentations and controlling it from across the dorm room.

Toshiba just took the cover off of the Qosmio F755, a new 3D notebook aimed at gamers and media junkies that want to watch 3D. Unlike the rest of the 3D notebook crowd, Toshiba was able to ditch the glasses, so you can watch 3D without looking like Bono.

The Qosmio F755 uses face tracking technology to do away with glasses and deliver a 3D experience that doesn’t quit when your glasses batteries die. The Qosmio line of Toshiba notebooks is focused on gamers and entertainment lovers and the F755 is no different.

Toshiba claims that this is the first notebook to display 2D and glasses free 3D at the same time.

Toshiba Qosmio F755 3D Doesn't Need No Stinkin' Glasses.

Glasses Free 3D Notebook Experience

The Qosmio F755 uses the built in webcam to track your face while you watch 3D movies and game, adjusting the images based on your location to provide optimal 3D. This technology means you aren’t restricted to a sweet spot for viewing 3D content.

The 15.6″ display doesn’t stop there. You can actually watch 3D content and see 2D content at the same time. This means you can watch a 3D movie on half the screen while you browse the web in readable 2D.

Toshiba Qosmio F755 3D Notebook

Pop in your favorite movies and the built in Toshiba Blu-Ray player will convert classics into 3D for a new experience.

Toshiba doesn’t specifically state that this is a solo experience, but we would be surprised to see the face tracking technology work with more than one individual at a time.

Toshiba Qosmio F755 Specs

The 15.6″ entertainment notebook comes packed with powerful internals to deliver a glasses free 3D experience.

An Intel Core i7 Sandy Bridge processor does the heavy lifting in combination with an NVIDIA GeForce 540M GPU. The F755 has an undisclosed amount of RAM, we’re guessing 8GB, and a 750GB hard drive.

Toshiba Qosmio F755 3D Overview

There are built in Harmon Kardon speakers which get a bump with software audio solutions from both Dolby and Waves.

If you are looking for low priced notebook without too many sacrifices, you should check out the new Toshiba Satellite L700 and C600 notebooks which are aimed at the average home user and come with an easy to swallow $379 starting price.

The Toshiba Satellite L700 and C600 notebooks come in a variety of sizes and prices designed to meet the varied needs of home users that want a basic computer for $500 or less. While we don’t have the absolute specs for the entry level models it looks like Toshiba will be delivering budget notebooks with a good choice of processors. Typically low end notebooks skimp in the processor choice, which impacts performance for the life of the notebook.

Toshiba Satellite L700 & C600 Quick Specs

The Toshiba Satellite L700 notebooks will feature the latest 2nd Gen Intel Core i family of processors as well as a new AMD A4 Dual Core and A6 Quad Core AMD Fusion A series processors. The Intel Core i family of processors come with a capable Intel integrated GPU and the AMD Fusion A Series comes with a more powerful AMD Radeon 6000 series GPU for better 3D Graphics performance.

The Satellite C600 notebooks are powered with the AMD Fusion C-50 and AMD Fusion E-350 processor choices which were announced back at CES in January. The E-350 dual core processor is more than capable for many home users based on our testing of similar systems. The C 50 processor will do, but it is a single core CPU, which means less power. If you can afford to bump up to the E-350 when you purchase one of these systems you won’t regret it.

Toshiba Satellite L700 & C600 Features

The Toshiba Satellite L700 is a plastic cased notebook with a glossy Fusion finish covering the lids of all four models. The Satellite C600 notebooks also have a plastic finish with a Trax Charcoal finish.

The L700 models will support Sleep & Charge, allowing you to charge up a phone or gadget while the notebook is asleep. Select models will come with a Blu-Ray drive and HDMI port.

The Toshiba Satellite C600 models will be pretty sparse on the extras, but basic users will have a plentiful 4GB of RAM, WiFi and a DVD burner to meet their needs.

Toshiba Satellite L700 & C600 Models

The following base models will be available at launch in a number of sizes. The actual retail models you find in store will be slightly different, reflecting a unique model for that store.
