How warm is a ScotteVest? That’s the question I get asked most often when I show off the Revolution Plus Jacket these days and it’s an important one especially with temperatures dipping close to zero here in Ohio.

We didn’t do any scientific tests with thermometers stuffed in pockets and taped to our body, despite how humorous that would have been. Instead we did some A/B testing with a Columbia jacket we purchased last year.

The temperature for most of our testing times hovered around 10 degrees with decennt amount of wind. We used this jacket as we expect most users will, going to and from work, short walks a trip to the mall or around town.

So, how warm did the ScotteVest Revolution Plus jacket keep us? After lots of time observing how we felt while wearing the jacket in winter weather we came to the conclusion that the Revolution Plus is a sufficiently warm jacket for the Ohio winters which drip down to zero on occasion.

One of the nicest things about the Revolution Plus was that the coat did a great job of cutting the wind which played a big role in keeping us warm without ht need for a bulky liner that made us feel like an extra on the The Nutty Professor.

How does the ScotteVest stack up to a Columbia coat? We found that the Revolution Plus was as warm as our Columbia coat that has an outer shell and a removable fleece liner. The Revolution Plus has no liner, just a quilted interior, but it did a heck of a job.

We wouldn’t want to spend all day outside in near zero temps without an additional layer of fleece (perhaps the Fleece 5.0) but we were comfortable during our daily routine of outside jaunts around 15 minutes in length or on the occasional longer walk. If the Revolution Plus did anything it reminded me just how little warmth traditional dress pants provide!

Usefulness:

The ScotteVest Revolution Plus coat echoes the experience we’ve had with other ScotteVest items like the Fleece 5.0 in that all of the pockets have a specific use and even if we aren’t using every pocket all of the time we still enjoy having pockets where we want them that hold specific gadgets just like we would want them to. The real magic of a ScotteVest isn’t that it has so many pockets, it’s that the pockets do what you want them to.

In our use of the PadPocket, we definitely felt that it is best suited for the iPad, not a laptop — even though you can carry a light laptop there in a pinch. One thing worth mentioning is that with the iPad in our pocket and the coat zipped up we had a few odd movements and bulges when walking up stairs due to the way the iPad sits in the jacket. This didn’t detract from the joy we experienced by taking the iPad and papers for class from one building to the other on campus without exposing them to the elements. This left our hands free to stay warm in pockets or check email on our phone.

Warmth and Protection:

We were a bit concerned that we wouldn’t have enough variation in weather to put the Revolution Plus to the test given our warm and mild fall, but this past week has allowed us to wear the jacket in cold rain, snow and windy weather. In all elements we were happy with the results. In the rain moisture beaded up on the outside, keeping our iPad dry and we didn’t have any water seep in at the sleeves.

In the wind and snow, with temps in the 20′s were were just as warm as we were in a Columbia coat which surprised us because the Columbia Jacket has a fleece interior. The Revolution Plus has a quilted interior which adds to the warmth. We will test the jacket out when temps get closer to zero here in Ohio, but we definitely feel that the jacket will keep us warm as we go through our daily activities. If it does get really cold, the XL size we have leaves enough room for a fleece liner for added warmth.

Comfort:

Not only does the Revolution Plus have more than enough pockets, it is also a really comfortable coat that fits well. We especially liked that the sleeves can be snugged up or rolled up when needed. If you are trying to decide what size to get, we recommend trying on a Columbia jacket at a local retailer and ordering a similar size; just make sure you keep in mind the gadgets you want to keep in it.

Value and Conclusions:

Overall the ScotteVest Revolution Plus jacket is a great coat and a great gadget accessory. If you’re looking for the perfect jacket for geeks and gadget lovers you’ve found it. If you’re looking for a great winter coat that can carry your gear and keep you warm this is the jacket for you. Even if you only travel to the office, mall and around town you’ll appreciate the ScotteVest Revolution Plus Jacket.

You may have been too busy preparing for Black Friday to realize that the weather is getting colder (at least in Ohio) and it is time to break out the winter jackets and prepare for a long and brutal winter. We’re a bit odd because ever since we saw the new ScotteVest Revolution Plus Jacket we’ve been actually looking forward to the temperature dropping so we could see how it handles the cold.

Scott Jordan was kind enough to send over a Revolution Plus Jacket for us to review and we wanted to share our first impressions of this new ScotteVest coat.

We’ll have another look at the Jacket and how it can help you handle the extremes of Black Friday late Thanksgiving, and a full review after we use it a bit more, but we couldn’t wait to share our first impressions or mini review of the ScotteVest Revolution Plus Jacket.

If you aren’t familiar with ScotteVest products, they all have a collection of pockets and a personal networking system that allows you to run wires and more throughout your jacket without the need to keep headphones balled up in a pocket or constantly snagging them when you take the coat off. The ScotteVest jackets and vests all have ear bud holders that also stop the earbuds from flopping about and most have a really cool water bottle strap that you won’t know you missed until you’ve used it!

The Revolution Plus Jacket is $200 and has 26 pockets (including two cleartouch pockets) that, like the Fleece 5.0 we used for CES last year, make it a great fit for travelers, but also for anyone who has to head outside in cold weather and likes to have enough pockets to take whatever it is they might need. There’s even a pen/stylus holder or two built in and a screen/glasses cleaning cloth tucked into the inner pocket.

The Revolution Plus Jacket has a quilted interior and is made of waterproof, breathable material for a warm and dry experience. The sleeves and the hood are detachable to fit your needs and the weather.

So far we are really digging the Revolution Plus Jacket. I wore it to a local Geek Lunch last Saturday, allowing my to take my MacBook Air 13.3″ notebook along in the “PadPocket” so that I didn’t need to carry a bag. Needless to say, this is an impressive feat, and one we’ll repeat, but the PadPocket works best when used to carry the iPad.

While you have either of these gadgets in the coat, people looking at you will have a hard time telling that you are packing a portable computer in your pocket. You can tell you have something in your pocket, but thanks to the weight management system it’s not a burden. The biggest issue we had with carrying a 13.3″ MacBook air had more to do with our girth rather than a fault of the jacket; we didn’t have the same issue with the iPad.

It’s finally getting chilly here in Ohio after a long warm fall. Today the “realfeel” temp was 26 degrees and the Revolution Plus Jacket was more than warm enough. We’ll be testing it out against a Columbia winter jacket as soon as it gets colder and reporting in our full review of the Revolution Plus jacket.

Our favorite thing about the pockets on the Revolution Plus isn’t that we can carry a laptop or the iPad, it’s that even if you only use 20% of the pockets on a day to day basis you’re still getting a better experience that you’ll find with most jackets. We’ll be showing you what we carry in our ScotteVest Revolution Plus soon and giving you a full review in early December.

Our closing thought in this first impression is that the Revolution Plus does so many little things well that you won’t notice until you have one. Want your coat to stay shut for a short hop between buildings, but it’s not with zipping up or buttoning? No worries the magnets on the front will hold them closed. It’s small touches like this that really make the ScotteVest a joy to wear.

The new items, which also include  jackets dubbed the Revolution and the Revolution Plus are part of a new product launch that is expected to happen later this year and no pricing or clear exterior shots of the new items are yet available.

Jordan has long teased ScotteVest fans with a trenchcoat style ScotteVest coat on Twitter and other outlets so the announcement of the Carry-On Coat isn’t a surprise, but you may be shocked at everything you can fit in this coat. With 33 pockets, it may be able to live up to the ScotteVest’s claim that it “can replace a carry-on.” Amongst other things the coat, which is made of a breathable waterproof Teflon, can hold your  iPad, iPhone, passport, TSA liquid bag, 2 changes of clothes and a pair of shoes. Thanks to the built-in weight management system and personal area network you shouldn’t feel the weight of these items as you would in a normal jacket and you’ll have easy access to your items. Fly a few times without paying for extra luggage and you’ll have your Carry On coat paid for in no time.

Also, in a style James Bond would be jealous of is the SeV Sport Coat. This 24 pocket sport coat has enough pockets to carry your iPad, iPhone and travel documents making it easy to glide from plane to the boardroom and back out. Or, infiltrate an evil headquarters, steal the plans to save the world and get the girl without showing any unsightly gadget bulge. No word on pricing, but for someone like me who needs a sports coat very rarely, this could be just the right jacket for the job.
