One of the drawbacks of the ultrabook category is the lack of robust power under the hood. Since these notebooks are meant to be super slim they feature ultra low voltage processors to keep them from getting too hot. That also results in lower performance than non-ULV chips.

Intel’s ULV chips have come a long way in the past couple of years and made it possible for ultrabooks to deliver performance beyond good enough for mainstream users.

However, those of us who want a really portable machine that can also kick butt when it comes to processing video and images or maybe even playing a game or two have to look beyond ultra at the moment.

That won’t true for much longer. According to Fudzilla, Nvidia’s Kepler class of GPUs will be in some of the second generation ultrabooks.

This means users will get the benefit of a discrete graphics card but won’t have to sacrifice long battery life. This new class of GPUs will come with Optimus technology, which switches between integrated and discrete graphics automatically when needed.

Fudzilla’s sources say that Acer and ASUS will be in on this deliciousness, and Liliputing points out that the IdeaPad U410, coming in May, is supposed to have GMA 610 graphics.

If this does happen, ultrabooks will get a nice boost in performance. It’s not likely to be so great that you’ll be zooming through Batman: Arkham City at 100fps. However, if you’re a mobile professional who does some graphics work, it may mean the difference between going with an ultrabook or going with a heavier, bulkier system.

The Kepler class of chips will begin shipping in April, so we won’t see ultrabooks with switchable graphics until the spring or summer.

Acer has announced a refresh of their thin Aspire TimelineX series that is designed to be an “ultra-slender notebook” at just an inch thick, but this time with Sandy Bridge processors and a promised eight to ten hours of battery life (depending on configuration), making all-day computing possible on these new models. With optional NVIDIA Optimus graphics technology and Dolby sound, these new models offer some attractive extras.

Sandy Bridge with Long Battery Life

The new Acer Aspire TimelineX notebooks all have options for an Intel Core i3 or i5 Sandy Bridge processor. This is Intel’s latest generation of mobile processor that offers a balance between speed/power and longer battery life. That is why Acer is promising the incredible 9 hours of battery life with those models featuring integrated graphics and 8 hours for the computers with dedicated graphics. Even if you get just three-fourths of that, which is the typical real-word expectation when dealing with manufacturer’s battery life claims, 6 to 7 hours will still get you through most of the business or school day before having to get more juice. If you run these machines full-on while playing games you can still expect a nice 3-4 hours of fragging, racing or strategizing.

Multimedia with Dolby Sound

In addition to using these for basic day-to-day tasks, the new Acer Aspire TimelineX series computers will serve as multimedia hubs for those on the go thanks to Dolby Home Theater v4 Audio and the two 3DSonic Stereo speakers. The HDMI output means you can plug into an external display and watch 1080p HD movies or you could just use the laptop itself and get good sound and 720p video with the built-in 1366×768 resolution.

The displays will be 16:9 widescreen HD display and powered by either Intel HD3000 integrated graphics on the lower end models and NVIDIA GeForce 540M or 520M discrete graphics with Optimus technology on the higher end machines. The latter models will make for a powerful system that could handle some gaming and more advanced multimedia content creation tasks. Some models with the higher end graphics cards will have a shorter battery life as a result.

Three Sizes Available

The Acer Aspire TimelineX 3830T is the smallest and most mobile of the three new models with a 13″ display and weighing 4.2 pounds. At the thinner front edge it is only .87″ thick and 1.15 at the back edge. This model does not have an integrated DVD drive. For those who like the form-factor of the Apple MacBook Air, this would be an option for a cheaper Windows PC even if it is not nearly as thin and light.

A 14″ display is available in the 4.88 pound 4830T model. With the larger 5830T you get a 15.6″ display. The larger computer is 5.6 pounds. These two larger models also have a built-in DVD drive and a dedicated numeric keypads. All three will have Acer’s multi-gesture trackpad.

Other Specs

The one USB 3.0 port on all three systems is great for faster transfer speeds, but can also charge things like your cell phone or MP3 player while the computer is off so long as it is plugged in.

A 1280×1024 webcam comes built-in and a mic with digital sound for noise canceling sound while you are recording video or using it for video chat.

To get online or on the company, home or school network there is 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi and Gigabit Ethernet LAN. Some models will also have Bluetooth 3.0 available.

Pricing and Availability

These models will be available today with a starting price of $599.99. The initial release includes the following models:

Compared to the NVIDIA GT 540M, the new GTX 560M promises playable framerates at maximum detail on games like Battlefield Bad Company 2, Call of Duty: Black Ops, Far Cry 2, Final Fantasy XIV, Mafia 2, Aliens vs Predator, Bulletstorm and Stalker COP.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560M Technologies

NVIDIA Optimus – The new GeForce GTX 560M GpU packs in a lot of NVIDIA Technology, but one of the most exciting additions, especially for notebooks that aren’t dedicated totally to gaming, is NVIDIA Optimus.

NVIDIA Optimus will automatically switch between the NVIDIA GPU and the integrated Intel GPU based on your needs so that your battery will last as long as possible. In practice this means that while you play Duke Nukem Forever you will enjoy high FPS and full details at the cost of battery life, but when you are taking notes in class or checking Facebook you’ll enjoy the battery life of a notebook with an integrated GPU.

NVIDIA 3D Vision – The new GeForce GTX 560M equipped notebooks will support NVIDIA 3D Vision, which allows users to connect wired or wireless glasses to their gaming notebook to enjoy up over 500 games in 3D. This same technology can also be used to view movies and photos in stereoscopic 3D.

DirectX 11 – The GeForce 560M GPU supports DirectX 11, but NVIDIA is claiming that if you have a GeForece GTX 560M GPU you won’t just get Direct X11, you’ll get, “DX 11 done right.” How so? NVIDIA tested the GeForece GTX 560M against the AMD Radeon HD 6780 GPU and found a 5 to 20% increase in FPS while playing Direct X 11 games.

PhysX - Rather than being limited to predetermined animations, PhysX allows games to deliver more realistic actions and animations based on, you guessed it, physics. To see how PhysX changes gameplay, watch the video above which shows a splitscreen view of PhysX off and PhysX on in Mafia 2.

Verde Drivers – The NVIDIA Verde Driver program delivers monthly drivers for Verde GPUs so that users get the most up to date drivers possible, so that they are ready to play new games when they arrive.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560M Notebooks

The new NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560M GPU will soon be found in many notebooks, but the first notebooks to deliver a GTX 560M GPU solution are the MSI GT683 and the MSI GT780, which are available immediately. Coming soon, we expect to see the following models sporting NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560M GPUs in June.

MSI GT683

The new Samsung QX410 is an extremely thin notebook with a 14-inch display and a chassis that is less than an inch thick. But the most interesting specs are the Optimus graphics and the long battery life.

The 14-inch display fills the lid with a small bezel around it for what Samsung calls edge-to-edge”. It also has a resolution of 1366 x 768 for 720p HD video powered by NVIDIA’s Optimus graphics engine, which switches off when not in need. The dedicated GeForce 310M graphics chip with 512MB of dedicated RAM is perfect for those demanding activities like editing video or picture files and playing the latest games. The lower powered integrated Intel graphics system is for when all that power is not needed, like document creation, reading web pages or email, etc. It’s like having two video cards in one PC.

While watching DVDs, streaming video, or listening to music, owners of the 410 will enjoy Samsung’s True2Surround sound system. It promises to deliver very natural and realistic sound from the round speakers. The larger acoustic chambers provide a rich bass and clear spoken word through the SRS Premium Sound processing.

The battery in the QX410 is one of Samsung’s new lithium polymer batteries. Sure it can last up to an average of 7 hours on a single charge, but the company also claims that it will last for 1,000 charging cycles. A cycle is from full charge to fully depleted. The average battery begins to degrade after a year and half of use. Samsung claims that the QX410′s battery will last around 3 years — double the average.

Along with the usual network connectivity like Wi-Fi and Ethernet, the QX410 will come with built-in WiMax for wireless Internet connectivity while away from home or the office.

The underpinnings of this system is an Intel Core i5-460M processor. Samsung adds to the QX410 4GB of DDR3 RAM and up to 640GB of hard drive space.

The QX410 has an attractive brushed aluminum case with black island or chicklet style black keys. In front of that keyboard is a unique buttonless easily configurable multi-function gesture pad” for input. Users will be able to use gestures to control the machine. The front of the pad has two areas for right and left mouse clicks in lieu of buttons.

Samsung will bundle their Easy File Share feature, which is a peer-to-peer file sharing tool. It allows users to trade files including pictures, video and music files over Wi-Fi. This works in tandem with any wireless computer. It also incorporates Samsung AllShare Technology, a tool for sending multimedia content over Wi-Fi to a Digital Living Network Alliance or DLNA enabled HDTV or mobile phone. With it users can watch videos, listen to music, or view slideshows from the computer on the DLNA device.

Fast Start is a Samsung exclusive feature which puts the notebook into a kind of sleep mode that saves power but allows users to load their previous work session on the QX410 in just a few seconds.

Samsung’s QX410 will start at $899 when available.

Staying true to their new bamboo persona, Asus recently released the U33Jc-A1. This bamboo-clad notebook features a classy look with the strong performance to back it up. However, the Asus U33Jc-A1 is not without shortcomings. Graphics performance, as well as a few other features seem to be lacking.

Asus U33Jc-A1 Specifications:

HDMI

USB 3.0

5-1 card reader

Windows 7 Home Premium

Asus included Intel’s Wireless Display technology in the U33Jc-A1, which can only run on Intel’s integrated graphics processor. This explains the need for two different graphics processors. Using NVIDIA Optimus technology, the notebook automatically switches between the discrete NVIDIA graphics and the integrated Intel graphics.

The Asus U33Jc-A1 is currently available for pre-order on Amazon for $999.

Review Roundup

Generally, those who have reviewed the Asus U33Jc-A1 have found it to be a pretty solid notebook. Most reviewers liked the bamboo and aluminum construction. However, many reviewers noted that the GPU is a little underpowered. Another major complaint is the lack of an optical drive, which is found on notebooks that are even thinner than the U33Jc-A1. Additional complaints include excessive heat as well as a non-backlit, “mushy” keyboard.

Laptop MAGAZINE – ASUS U33Jc Review: ”Not since the introduction of the unibody MacBook Pro have we been this excited about a notebook’s design. Sure, we’ve seen our fair share of cool patterns, textures, and lighting effects during the past couple of years, but the ASUS U33Jc is different.

And the U33Jc is much more than a pretty face. This $999 machine ($949 street) combines a Core i3 processor with Nvidia Optimus graphics to give users a good one-two punch of performance and long battery life. The notebook can’t handle the latest games as well as its predecessor, and it generates a little more heat than we’d like, but overall it’s a winner.” – Mark Spoonauer

Engadget – ASUS U33Jc-A1 Bamboo series review: “The U33Jc may be on the bamboo list now, but it’s much more than a bamboo laptop. The wood certainly makes you feel like you’re buying a unique device, but the draw of the machine for most will be its superior blend of graphics, performance and battery life. We still have to knock the U33Jc for its lack of an optical drive, the cheap feeling keyboard quality, and it’s thicker chassis — if you’re in the market for a really light 13-inch machine we have to recommend Toshiba’s $899 Portege R705 — however, for $999 the ASUS U33Jc is an incredibly strong choice, just like the material that covers it.” – Joanna Stern

PC Magazine - Asus U33Jc-A1 – Full Review: “The Asus U33Jc-A1′s craftmanship deserves every design accolade imaginable, but it’s hard not to draw comparisons to the similarly configured U30Jc-A1, the current Editors’ Choice. You’re basically paying a $100 premium for the bamboo design and trading in the optical drive for a minor bump in processor speed and hard drive capacity. Omitting an optical drive, having an under-clocked GPU, and running hot at the base are signs of insufficient cooling, you can only wonder, is the use of bamboo to blame? Who knows. What I do know is that the U33Jc-A1 is a beautifully made laptop, but the U30Jc-A1 is the better overall machine.” – Cisco Cheng

CNET – Asus U33Jc-A1: Ackerman found the notebook to have a lot of great pluses. He especially liked the overall design of the notebook and says that it is a nice break from the glossy plastic notebooks that have recently been released. However, he noted that the absence of an optical drive could be an issue, but he can’t remember the last time he actually used one. - Video Review by Dan Ackerman

Yesterday, Laptop MAGAZINE reviewed Toshiba’s new notebook, the Satellite M645. The 14-inch thin-and-light notebook provided the best sound quality for its class.

The Satellite M645 features a stylish design, composed of a classy black exterior, and a Fusion X2 matte-finish covered interior. Toshiba’s Fusion X2 finish resists fingerprints that plague many other laptops.

Laptop MAGAZINE noted that the keyboard has just the right amount of spacing between the keys, making typing a breeze. The touchpad, which features Toshiba’s Fusion X2 finish, offers smooth and accurate desktop navigation.

The thing that sets the Satellite M645 apart from other thin-and-light notebooks is the premium sound quality, courtesy of the integrated Harmon / Kardon speakers which are powered by Dolby Advanced Audio. Laptop MAGAZINE goes so far as to say that the Satellite M645 “produced the best audio we’ve ever heard from a mainstream notebook.” Even at maximum volume, there was no distortion or tininess.

However, these strengths don’t change the fact that the Satellite M645 is mildly expensive, starting at around $980. Also, images taken using the built-in webcam were “murky” and the notebook experienced relatively short battery life, when compared to the category average.

Toshiba Satellite M645 Specs:

2.4 GHz Intel Core i5-450M processor

Gateway just announced the new Gateway ID series of notebooks. The Gateway ID notebooks will bring a new sense of style to the Gateway brand and according to the press release, “… is designed to deliver the latest in mobile technology in a thin and lightweight design that is modern, chic and eye-catching.”

The new notebook series from Gateway isn’t a fashion statement like the Gateway LT23 series, but it looks great. Unlike the LT23, the new ID line is wrapped in a silver casing, made out of aluminum allow, that looks very professional and the devices are thin at just an inch thick. There are currently two sizes, the Gateway ID49 which is a 14″ notebook that weighs 5.07 pounds and the Gateway ID59 which is a 15.6″ notebook that weighs 5.5 pounds.

The ID series also includes a multi-touch trackpad that is aqua blue and glows when used. The touchpad will allow users to scroll through documents, pinch to zoom and perform other common gesture based commands. The keypad appears to be an island style design with some separation between keys and the larger ID59 comes with a dedicated number pad.

Both of the notebooks offer the choice of an Intel Core i3 or Intel Core i5 processor and configurations begin with 4GB of DDR3 RAM and hard drive choices up to 500GB. The displays offer a 1366×768 resolution and the ID49 line can be configured with an NVIDIA GeForce GT330M GPU and NVIDIA Optimus technology for inteligent graphics switching which will deliver power when needed but scale back to save battery life when not. Both notebooks claim an estimated 6 hours of battery life . The notebooks are also equipped with Dolby Home Theater v3 audio enhancements which will provide superior sound.

The Gateway ID series will also have a social networking button that provides fast access to numerous popular social networking sites. The 1.3MP webcam with two digital microphones should make video-chatting an easy affair.

NVIDIA has announced that it will be converging future NVIDIA Verde GPU drivers across the desktop, notebook and Optimus optimized computers and will be releasing a notebook that is ready to be connected directly to a 3DTV.

Beginning with release v256 the NVIDIA Verde drivers, notebook users with NVIDIA Verde compatible GPUs will be able to enjoy the same benefits at the same time as desktop users which will make for many happy mobile gamers. Especially since the NVIDIA Verde drivers already deliver up to a 30% boost in game performance, higher playable frame rates (>30FPS) on many games and unlock up to 5x GPU Acceleration on multimedia applications.

The Verde drivers also already extend 3D VISION support to Notebooks thanks to the latest NVIDIA Verde v197 release and now NVIDIA is planning a NVIDIA 3DTV Play-Ready PC.

This NVIDIA 3DTV Play-Ready PC will be a Notebook PC with a GeForce GPU that will be able to connect directly to a 3DTV via an HDMI connector for 3D multimedia and gaming. These notebooks will not need a 3D Vision Kit, but will make use of NVIDIA 3DTV Play Software to support gaming on all 3DTVs that support HDMI 1.4a/1.4 including both active shutter and passive polarized sets.

It is exciting to see the proliferation of 3D gaming in the PC gaming arena and while 3DTVs remain out of many consumer’s price range, this new technology from NVIDIA is already making the case for 3D displays in the home. I can’t wait to see where NVIDIA takes 3D entertainment.

We were all so excited that Apple FINALLY released a refresh to its line of MacBook Pro notebooks. Finally a new processor, some improved graphics, better battery life (on the 13″ model) and some other finesses made it into the refresh.

Now, one of the speculations on the new notebooks was that with the advent of the new Nvidia Optimus system for video, it would be included into the notebooks. Well unfortunately, its not. Instead, Apple uses multiplexer (mux) hardware to switch the output to the screen between the processor-integrated graphics core and the discrete Nvidia GPU, according to an article at The Register. Like Nvidia Optimus, the switch is triggered in software by Mac OS X which monitors when frameworks that require GPU acceleration come in to play. At that point, it powers down the IGP and powers up the GPU.

Why did Apple make this decision? Its unknown at this time. Using the multiplexer is fine, but can cause screen flicker when changing between the integrated video and the Nvidia video. Users have commented on this on and off as an “annoyance” of theirs. Hopefully this decision won’t come back and bite Apple. With the economy being the way it is, consumers arent upgrading their computer systems with every hardware refresh.
