Lenovo is making waves at CES 2011 with the introduction of many new ThinkPad Edge notebooks including the new ultraportable ThinkPad X120e 11.6″ laptop that’s not just ultraportable, it’s also affordable with prices starting at under $400! The slim ThinkPad Edge X120e is the first commercial laptop running new AMD Fusion processors which will be fully announced at CES later this week.

The ThinkPad Edge X120e will come with the option of the AMD Fusion E240 or AMD Fusion E-350 processors which Lenovo is claiming will deliver 65% faster graphics for accelerated web and business applications.

Despite its small size the X120e comes with a full size standard ThinkPad keyboard and the much loved pointing nub that ThinkPad diehards will enjoy. The 11.6″ display is anti-glare and offers a 1366×768 resolution which should deliver a wonderful experience outdoors, especially when compared to a glossy display like those found on most consumer laptops. Other inclusions such as a low light sensitive webcam and an HDMI port round out the machine.

“Multimedia elements like audio and video have become important parts of our world, and businesses are embracing this trend in digital content,” said Dilip Bhatia, vice president, ThinkPad Marketing and Product Operations, Lenovo in a press release announcing the new series. “We’ve optimized the ThinkPad X120e to not only give businesses an excellent experience creating and consuming multimedia content, but we’ve also made key improvements to an area that has plagued laptops: battery life.”

Speaking of battery life, the ThinkPad Edge X120e claims to deliver 6.6 hours of battery life to give users a fairly long battery life given the size of the machine. If it holds true, the X120e will have a longer battery life than the 11.6″ MacBook Air.

We look forward to getting hands on time with the Edge X120e at CES 2011 to see how the machine feels in our hands and if it can deliver a business-worthy performance. If it lives up the specs on paper it could give many netbooks a run for their money — especially with a ThinkPad keyboard.

The Lenovo ThinkPad Edge X120e will be available in February with prices starting under $400.

Netbooks and Laptops under 12″

HP Mini 210 – Starts at $329, $419 for dual core

The HP Mini 210 is one of our top picks for a netbook this holiday season because it offers a very portable package with numerous refinements over the last generation model including a screen that can tilt all the way back and the option for a dual core atom processor. The Mini 210 comes in five different color options that will allow you to personalize the netbook to your recipient’s favorite colors. We recommend upgrading to the 250GB 7200RPM hard drive for an extra $10.

Specs: Intel Atom N455 1.66 GHz, 1GB RAM, 160GB hard drive, 10.1″ display

The Samsung NF310 is a new addition to the Samsung line of netbooks which brings a new fin-like design and a dual core atom processor. You may want to vet this one with your gift recipient as not everyone will be a fan of the new design. With the dual core processor the NF310 will be able to handle flash video like Hulu and Netflix out of the box.

Specs: Intel Atom N550 1.5GHz, 1GB RAM, 250GB hard drive 10.1″ display with 1366 x 768 resolution.

Specs: AMD Neo II 1.7GHz processor, 2GB RAM, 250GB hard drive, ATI Radeon GPU with 384MB dedicated video RAM

Looking for an Ultraportable with enough power to get your work done and a price that’s on the nice list? Well, the R705 is exactly what you’re looking for. This laptop earned our Editor’s Choice award for delivering an incredible user experience for around $800. It also comes with a battery that lasts around 5 hours and Intel WiDi which allows you to wirelessly stream HD content to your HDTV with a $99 NetGear Adapter.

Specs: 2.26GHz Intel Core i3 processor, 4GB RAm, 500GB hard drive, 13.3″ 1366 x 768 display and a 6 cell battery.

Looking for an entry level Apple notebook, try out the 13″ MacBook which is powerful enough to meet the needs of home users and students alike. The built in iLife apps like iPhoto, iMovie and Garageband add to the value and will have you sharing your memories or creating music right out of the box.

The latest Apple laptop is the incredibly thin MacBook Air which is a site to behold and perfect for your always on the move gift recipient, though you will need to dig deep to get this as a gift. The High-Res 13.3″ display offers a lot of room to work and the system is ready to go almost as fast as you can turn it on. We recommend bumping up to 4GB of RAM for an extra $100 if you can manage it since you can’t upgrade that later. Here’s our review of the MacBook Air 13.

Specs: 1.86GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, 128GB SSD, 2GB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce 320M graphics and a 7 hour battery

Laptops Between 14-15.6″

Sony VAIO EB Series – $599

The Sony VAIO EB is a real steal at this price and offers a stellar user experience in a stylish package. When we reviewed the VAIO EB VPC-EB33FM/BJ recently we were surprised that it came with a Intel Core i processor and the Sony style for $600. It also has WiMax if that is something your gift recipient is interested in.

Specs: Intel Dual Core P6100 2.0 GHz processor, 320GB hard drive, 2GB RAM and a 15.5″ display

HP dv6 – from $549

The HP dv6 was refreshed earlier this year with a new metal alloy lid and a focus on the look and feel of the device. This has led to a notebook that provides a more durable experience than you’ll typically find on a consumer grade laptop. The dv6 is one of our favorite 15″ laptops. Check out our review of the AMD quad core powered HP dv6z.

Specs: 2.4GHz Intel Core i3 processor, 4GB RAM, 500GB hard drive and a 15.6″ display

Lenovo ThinkPad Edge 14 - $623

The Lenovo Edge 14 may be designed with a small business user in mind, but the laptop is also a great fit for a student or mobile home user. The 14″ form factor provides a nice size screen for working on without bulking up to the full 15.5″ display that comes on many consumer laptops and adds to their weight. Key features like a spill resistant keyboard and other durability enhancements add to the value. You can check out our review of the Edge 14 as well as the Edge 13 and Edge 15 laptops.

Specs: 2.4Ghz Intel Core i3 processor, 4GB RAM, 500GB hard drive, fingerprint reader and 14″ display.

MacBook Pro 15 – $1,705 ($1699 with student discount)

The 15″ MacBook Pro is another expensive laptop, but if you are trying to find a gift for a budding multimedia enthusiast or as a gift to the creative freelancer on your list the MacBook Pro has enough power to meet their needs. We recommend finding out where they will be doing their work to see if they want the optional anti-glare screen.

Specs: 2.4GHz Intel Core i5 processor, 4GB RAM, 320GB hard drive and a 15.4″ display

Laptops 16″ or Larger:

Dell Inspiron 17R – $549

For users who won’t be mobile often and want a large screen at an attractive price, look at the Inspiron 17R from Dell which provides a 17.3″ display and a Core i3 processor for under $550. This large display offers a higher resolution screen that is great for watching movies or working on two documents at the same time.

Specs: 2.4Ghz Intel Core i3 processor, 3GB RAM, 320GB hard drive and a 17.3″ display

HP ENVY 17 3D – $1,599

If you have a gamer on your list that wouldn’t want the small screen of the Alienware M11x, take a gander at this 17.3″ 3D display that cames all wrapped up in a stylish package. The ENVY 173D is ready for gaming or working on multimedia files and the built in 3D technology means you can relax and watch the latest 3D movies or game in 3D.

Specs: 1.6Ghz Quad Core Intel Core i7 processor, 1GB ATI Mobility Radeon(TM) HD 5850 Graphics, 6GB RAM, 500GB Hard drive and a 17.3″ diagonal Full HD HP 3D Ultra BrightView Infinity LED Display (1920×1080)

The Sony VAIO EC series laptop is a desktop replacement computer that weighs in around 8 pounds, but it has a nice look, comfortable keyboard and a 1600 x 900 17.3″display that is great for work and play. We recently reviewed the dual core VAIO EC and found it to be capable for your average home user. If you are getting this for a power user we recommend bumping up to the Core i3 or Core i5 processor.

Specs: Intel Dual Core P6100 2.0 GHz processor, 320GB hard drive, 2GB RAM and a 17.3″ display

The price and inclusion of many features normally reserved for an enterprise level notebook is what makes the Lenovo Edge 14 stand out.

Lenovo Edge 14 Quick Specs:

The Lenovo Edge 14 we tested is the baseline model from Lenovo that includes an Intel Core i3 processor (2.13GHz), 2GB RAM, Windows & professional, a 14″ 1366×768 display and numerous ports. The Edge 14 also includes the UltraNav trackpad and pointerstick which is good news for users who can’t live without their home-row pointer. The Lenovo Edge 14 as tested retails for $649 (with Windows 7 Home) and can be configured with a HeatWave Red lid, more RAM, a larger hard drive and Bluetooth for up to $879.

Who is this Notebook for?

As I mentioned, the Edge 14 is designed with the small business person in mind. Its biggest strength is that it feels and acts much like higher priced corporate machines at half the cost. The Edge may not be the lightest laptop, at 4.9 pounds, but it is easy to take on the occasional trip or just to carry around town to meetings or wherever your office happens to be on a given day. If mobility is a factor the Lenovo Edge 13, with a smaller form and longer battery life may a better fit.

Lenovo Edge 14 Video Overview: Take a tour around the Edge 14 in our unboxing video.

Display:

The display on the Lenovo Edge is an average display. By that I mean that while it isn’t going to blow you away like that of an entertainment notebook; it does a perfect job for getting work done. The display is a glossy display, but it is much less reflective than glossy screens found on many other notebooks, which means overhead lights and the sun are less of an issue. I also really like that you can tilt the display completely back to 180 degrees so you are almost assured a workable viewing angle. The 1366×768 resolution allows for good use of the Windows 7 snap feature and it is bright enough that you can comfortably work at “12″ and bump all the way up to “15″ for watching a movie or reviewing a PowerPoint.

Keyboard and mouse:

The keyboard on the Lenovo Edge 14 is, like all Lenovo Edge keyboards, a joy to type on. The keys have great spacing, wonderful feedback and an audible thwack that is just loud enough to be satisfying without annoying neighbors in a coffeeshop. The key placement is optimal for typing and Lenovo has done a good job of keeping keys like PgUp and PgDn, out of the way so that you don’t accidentally hit them. Heavy ‘Ctrl’ users will also enjoy the ability to swap the ‘Ctrl’ and ‘Fn’ key in the notebook’s BIOS to fit their preference.

The mouse itself offers a large enough surface that isn’t prone to resistance during extended mousing sessions and two separate mouse buttons at the bottom. The touchpad allows for gestures such as two finger scrolling through long documents and webpages. There is also a Pointerstick and accompanying left, right and middle mouse buttons for users who don’t want to leave the home row. Personally, I don’t use the Pointerstick, but it performed as well as any pointerstick I have ever used.

Battery:

The battery life of the Edge 14 was perhaps the most disappointing part of using it. With the display at “12″ and normal usage – Office 2010, Web surfing, Tweetdeck and a random Youtube clip – I could only get a little over 2 hours of life; 2 hours and 4 minutes to be exact. This isn’t the worst battery life I have seen, but given the weight of the device and the ~6 hours I experienced on the Lenovo Edge 13 I was really hoping for a bit more.

Video and Audio:

For thin speakers that are built right into the base of the display, the Edge 14 produces decent sound. You can certainly fill up a room with music or an audio presentation without distortion. What you won’t get is any bass or low end, but this is a business notebook so we don’t expect to be blown away by the audio.

As far as video goes, again the Edge 14 performs well. I could easily watch a 720P trailer from Big Buck Bunny without any stutters, though there was one brief pause while watching a 720p trailer for Iron Man 2.

Processing:

The Edge 14 is powered by an Intel Core i3 processor which is a practical choice and one that works well for the machine overall. Even with just 2GB of RAM I never found myself waiting for the machine to catch up with me when jumping between programs. I was able to do some light video editing in Windows Live Movie Maker without bringing the system to a standstill and completed the movie publishing in a reasonable 7-10 minutes depending on the file size. This notebook should easily handle the needs of most small business owners, so long as HD video editing isn’t a daily task.

Connectivity:

The Lenovo Edge has plenty of ports to keep you connected.

Left (left to right) Fan, VGA, eSATA/USB, Ethernet, HDMI, ExpressCard 34, Microphone/Headphone combo port

Right (left to right) USB, USB, DVD drive, PSU, Kensington

There is also a 7-in-1 card reader on the front of the Edge an additional USB port on the rear.

Conclusion:

Like its fellow Edge notebooks, the Edge 14 is a good buy for Small Business users. In an ideal world the battery life would be better, but for small business employees and owners who want a durable machine with many of the ThinkPad features the Edge 14 offers significant value at $649. If portability and battery life is an issue then you should check out the Lenovo Edge 13 review and if you want a bigger screen then the Lenovo Edge 15 might be a better fit; even though it has similarly poor battery life.

The Lenovo Edge 14 not only adds a bigger screen; it also includes a new Intel Core i3 Processor, spill resistant keyboard and the option for a matte black lid, which is on the unit we received for review. We’ll be putting it through its paces and sharing our first impressions soon, but until then you can watch us unbox the new Lenovo Edge 14.

Demand for constant, fast wireless technology has become an expectation, and it’s now mission critical for doing business today,” said Dilip Bhatia, executive director of Lenovo ThinkPad product marketing.

Because Sprint has upgraded its network, these ThinkPad laptops will be able to connect at 4G speeds in Atlanta, Chicago, Philadelphia and Seattle. This year they will be adding support in Cincinnati, Cleveland, Los Angeles, Miami, Pittsburgh, Salt Lake City and St. Louis. This is in addition to Boston, Denver, Kansas City, Houston, Minneapolis, New York, San Francisco and Washington, D.C., which were already announced earlier this year. So support for Lenovo’s ThinkPad laptops with 4G may be coming to your neighborhood soon.

For the past 2 months I’ve been putting the Lenovo Edge 13 Notebook to the test in a tour de force that covered the normal home to office beat as well a roundtrip high intensity trip to CES and back that really tested the power — and the portability– of the 13″ notebook.

The ThinkPad Edge 13 is a break from the old for Lenovo in terms of style and design but in the transition they kept many of the ThinkPad favorites such as the famous TrackPoint which helps this notebook look new without providing too much of a shock to users who want the same ThinkPad experience they are used to.

Oh, there’s also a glowing LED dotting the “i” in the ThinkPad logo that looks adds a little pizzazz to the otherwise blank lid and palmrest.

Along with the new design the Ultra-Portable Edge comes with a lower price than the traditional ThinkPad series starting at $799 for an AMD powered version and climbing to $1,199 for the WiMax equipped model which we are reviewing. The good news, for shoppers on a budget, is that the AMD model is routinely on sale for below $600 and the Intel Core 2 Duo model can be had for $799-$899 on a regular basis.

Hardware Tour

Left to Right: SD card reader, Mic/headphone jack, USB, USB, Power connector

Specifications

The Lenovo ThinkPad Edge 13 unit that we reviewed comes with the following specifications:

Intel Core 2 Duo SU7300 Processor ( 1.30GHz 800MHz 3MB )

Windows 7

Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 4500MHD

4 GB PC3-8500 DDR3 SDRAM 1066MHz

13.3 ” HD Glare with integrated camera 1366×768

Industry Standard 2 button touchpad with TrackPoint

320GB 5400 RPM hard drive

6 Cell Lithium Ion

Intel Centrino Advanced-N + WiMAX 6250

Bluetooth 2.1 EDR

One year warranty covering parts and labor

Design

Not as svelte and swirly as many notebooks on the market today but for a ThinkPad it is a little flashy. The Edge trades in the matte black that has long been the hallmark of ThinkPad notebooks for a glossier finish available in black and red which looks very elegant without appearing looking like you borrowed your tween’s notebook to make a boardroom pitch.

Keyboard and Mouse

My first impression of the Lenovo Edge 13′s keyboard came with a few key placement gripes, but I was able to fix them in a matter of minutes and have been happily typing every since. In a given day I can easily type close to 1,000 words, and that’s just what I track on Notebooks and WalletPop, so I am as picky about keyboards as golfers are about their clubs.

These keys will spoil you for any other notebook

If you’ve read any of my other reviews you’ll remember that I typically settle for a keyboard but with the Edge there’s no settling, this is one of the best keyboards I’ve used on an ultra-portable notebook; and perhaps on any notebook in recent history. The keys on the Edge are of the new chiclet style which translates into perfect spacing, great feedback and an incredibly enjoyable typing experience. The Edge’s keyboard even gets the little things right with a giant right shift key and recessed page up and page down keys that round out the great typing experience. My fingers are already aching at the thought of typing on any other notebook and especially at the prospect of picking up more of my mobile writing on a netbook.

Both the trackpad and the TrackPoint nub provide an enjoyable mousing experience including the ability to use gestures. Personally I can’t understand how users can make do with the TrackPoint nub on an extended basis as it drives me crazy but from what I gather you’re either nub user or you aren’t so I’ll keep my comments on the TrackPoint to the fact that it performed just as every other ThinkPad pointer stick has. The mousepad is on par with the keyboard when it comes to usability thanks to a large size and two separate mouse buttons.

Performance and Screen

During my use, the Edge did everything from web browsing and writing to editing movies with Windows Live Movie Maker and handled it all without complaint. The only issue I had during my 2 months of use in terms of performance came from having Firefox open for a few days and putting the computer to sleep multiple times per day; but this problem was fixed by restarting and switching to Chrome so it isn’t so much an Edge issue as an observation of how Firefox handles on it in an on-the-go setting.

The Edge’s 13.3″ screen performs well providing ample workroom thanks to a 1366 x 768 resolution and minimal glare, even outside, despite the glossy finish on the screen. The brightness settings were sufficient, though there were a few opportunities where I would have preferred the screen to go just a little brighter.

Battery

While Battery Eater wouldn’t run for me to give you a benchmark battery life my real world experience with the ThinkPad Edge has been one of 5-6 hours, with 5 hours occurring while using Wifi with the screen set at a usable “12″ out of “15 on the brightness scale. I didn’t use the Edge to watch much video, not because it wasn’t capable, but it should be able to get your though a downloaded movie with no trouble. When you need to recharge, the Edge can fill up quick — from 3% to 99.1% in an hour and 15 minutes — which will turn this 5-6 hour battery into an all day one assuming you can find a half hour at a outlet over lunch.

Heat and Noise

When it comes to heat and noise the Edge scores well on both fronts. While you can hear the fan humming along slightly at times the Edge is overall a very quiet machine and it wasn’t too hot to use on my lap. The fact that the Edge didn’t scorch my lap like my HP Mini 1000 and HP tx2000 do is a welcome change.

Conclusion

The Lenovo ThinkPad Edge is a very capable notebook and using it for the past two months has brought me to a conclusion similar to the one Matthew Dillon had when he abandoned his various sized netbooks in favor of a Macbook; a powerful 13″ notebook is the perfect compromise between size and use. Thanks to solid performance, good battery life and light weight the Lenovo Edge 13 is a great notebook for professionals or students and provides a glimpse of what ThinkPad’s can look like when they loosen the corporate tie a little.

Lenovo has lent us a new Lenovo Edge 13″ notebook, for review. The Edge is a new series from Lenovo aimed at small business professionals who are on the go and in order to give it a fair shake I will be taking it with me to CES to see how it handles on the road. In fact, I am working on it in the terminal right now.

Before I left for the airport I’ve worked the 13″ notebook into my daily routine; using it to blog and to prepare a syllabus for my upcoming class on e-commerce so that I could get used to it and tweak anything that didn’t fit my workflow.

So far, I have been pretty pleased with the Lenovo Edge. My biggest gripes where with the keyboard; but I have been able to solve them all with built in changes and SharpKeys which let me swap the Delete and End keys. I was able to change swap the function and ctrl keys in the Edge’s Bios which was a major help and I am pretty impressed that Lenovo offers this functionality out of the box. When I received the Edge the spacebar was a bit sticky; but after playing with it for a few minutes it is now operating as normal, and provides nice tactile feedback and an audible click. The rest of the keys provide a similar tactile feel but thankfully, no audible click.

As far as size and weight go the Edge is compact and portable to go with me almost anywhere and I really enjoy the 13″ screen ad full size keyboard when compared to my netbook. Battery life has been good so far with 5 hours being easily achieved; I haven’t strained the machine yet but I expect that I will do so at CES this week.

One of the things about the Edge that loyal ThinkPad users will appreciate is the Thumbstick and mouse buttons that come over from the traditional ThinkPad line and accompany the multi-touch trackpad on the Edge. Personally, I wish they had discarded the extra mouse buttons for a bigger trackpad; but the existing size still works.

That’s all for now, more details after I put the Edge to the test on the road and at CES.

Right before the big show kicks off in Vegas this week Lenovo has announced two new notebooks, the Lenovo Edge and the Lenovo X100e; both of which break from the standard Lenovo tradition of Intel only notebooks to offer an AMD processor option to consumers. The Lenovo Edge will come in 13″, 14″ and 15″ models with the 13″ Lenovo Edge currently available from Lenovo for $549 and the 14″ expected to hit Best Buy later this year.

The Edge is aimed at small to medium sized business users and it is a break from the traditional matte black Lenovo ThinkPad’s it brings along some of the Lenovo touches that many users can’t do without including the mouse pointer which is accompanied by a multi-touch touchpad and Windows 7 Optimization. I have been using a Lenovo Edge for the past 2 weeks and I will be posting my initial impressions of the light notebook this week.

The Lenovo X100e is a smaller 11.6″ notebook that can also be configured with either an Intel or AMD processor and prices start at $449. The Lenovo X100e is being called an entry level ultraportable; but like the Edge it still has the thumbstick and a touchpad so you won’t have to give up too much; though you will definitely want to upgrade to a 6-cell battery as the standard 3 cell is rated at a last-decade-worthy 2-hours.
