Starting this week Best Buy stores will be carrying the Fall 2010 iPod line as well as the iPad and plenty of accessories for each.

When I visited my local Best Buy tonight I was able to play around with the new iPod Touch fourth gen, the small and cool iPod Nano with a touchscreen and feel the new iPod Shuffle. After a few minutes of hands on I definitely want to get an iPod Nano. It’s small enough to take anywhere and the screen gives me more options than the small Sandisk Sansa Clip I used to use.

My local Best Buy also had the iPad in stock and a demo unit available to test out which should cut down on the amount of time I have to spend demoing the iPad when I use it in public. I was excited to see a large collection of iPad cases from inCase, Targus, Belkin and others available in store and had high hopes that the iPad Stylus sold at some Best Buy locations had finally made it to my local store.

Specifically I was hoping to see the Boxwave iPad Stylus or Targus iPad Stylus, but after one employee asked a team leader I was promptly told that there is no such thing as a stylus for the iPad, with the explanation that the iPad uses “heat or something” so it won’t work with a stylus.

Not an iPad Stylus

It was at this point that he took out his keys and, to prove a point, began tapping the demo iPad’s screen! Not one to witness this type of tablet violence I gave up and went home, tweeting about the experience.

A real iPad Stylus

Shortly after I got home I found out through Milo that my local Best Buy did indeed have the stylus in stock and thanks to @Coral_BestBuy, Best Buy’s Corporate Community Connector, and the dedication of the local employees I was able to purchase the Targus iPad Stylus on a second trip.

You should be able to find demo units in most Best Buy locations, but if you want to make sure that your local store has the iPad or new iPod you want in stock hit up Milo.com where you can check the local iPod and iPad stock in real time.

Oh, and, “One more thing!”, Apple also announced the second generation of Apple TV complete with 99 cent TV show rentals.

Steve Jobs kicked off the Fall 2010 Apple Music Event by announcing iOS 4.1 which will be available next week for the iPhone and iPod touch as a free update and will include a fix for the proximity sensor. Jobs also announced iOS 4.2 which will arrive in November as a free update for the iPad as well as the iPhone and iPod Touch. iOS 4.2 catches the uPod up to the features iPhone users have been enjoying such as multi-tasking and threaded email. iOS 4.2 also adds the ability to print wirelessly and stream music local content from AirPlay, formerly known as AirTunes.

Game Center – Another part of the iOS 4.1 update is the kickoff of Game Center which makes it easy for developers to allow users to play against eachother in games on iDevices.

Being a music event it’s no surprise that Apple also announced updates to all of the iPods, shaving sizes, adding features and more power. All of the new iPods are available for pre-order today and will begin shipping next week.

One of the most impressive updates of the day came in the form of a new slimmer and more powerful iPod Touch. The new iPod Touch packs the same A4 processor as the iPhone and promises 40 hours of music playback. It also is packing a 3 axis gyroscope for gaming and a front facing camera for Facetime chatting. There is also a camera on the back capable of recording HD Video which users can edit with iMovie.

The new iPod Touch comes in three models:

64GB for $399

Available today, iTunes 10 ditches the CD logo it has had for a decade and adds many new features including Ping, a social music discovery tool that connects you to your friends and artists to help you find new music. Both iTunes 10 and Ping are available today for Mac and PC.

Apple TV

The final announcement was, in true Apple fashion, a whopper — the newer, smaller and cheaper Apple TV device that streams 99 cent HD TV shows, $4.99 HD first run movies, Netflix, content from your local Mac or PC as well as many other sources. The silent and slim Apple TV has no local storage, instead it connects over Ethernet or built in Wifi and connects to your TV over HDMI.

The Apple TV is available for pre-order today at $99 and will begin shipping in 4 weeks.

The smallest and the cheapest of the new models is the new iPod Shuffle.

The new iPod Shuffle enlists many new features. Due to many complaints about the lack of buttons on the past model, Apple has brought back the buttons. It still has a built-in clip, making it easy to wear. Apple managed to get 15 hours of battery life out of the tiny device.

In addition to the revival of the buttons, Apple included VoiceOver, just like on the previous iPod shuffle. VoiceOver enables users to browse playlists and genius mixes. It also announces the current song being played and when the battery needs charged.

The new iPod Shuffle will cost $49 and will be available next week in 5 different colors. Pre-order starts today.

A Closer Look at the New iPods is a post by Josh Smith from Notebooks.com.

Today at Apple’s “It’s only Rock and Roll” event the company announced several changes to the popular iPod line of mp3 players. While the event didn’t lead to a camera for the iPod Touch, like many had suspected, the upgrades and price cuts keep Apple competitive with the forthcoming Zune HD.

Keep reading to find out more about the iPod Nano 5G, iPod Touch 3G and updates to the iPod Classic and iPod shuffle lines.

iPod Nano:

It makes sense to start out with a closer look at the iPod Nano since it certainly has one of the most fundamental changes to the new iPods announced today. That change is the addition of a video camera which shoots in 640×480 at up to 30 frames per second and offers 15 different real-time special effects. Your movies will come complete with AAC audio which is captured by the microphone that has also been added to the Nano 5g.

Here’s a hands on video with the iPod Nano 5G from SlashGear showing off the new camera and video features.

Apple’s introduction of the Nano at today’s event pitted it against the Flip camcorder but given the limited resolution even a good performance will likely leave the Nano as handy camera for capturing on the go movies an impromptu scenes rather than a true camcorder replacement. Nano users will be able to view their movies the 5G Nano’s larger 2.2” screen and listen in on the newly included speaker or move them to a computer for easy uploading to YouTube.

Other notable additions to the iPod Nano include an FM Tuner which comes complete with iTunes tagging and the ability to pause a radio program and a pedometer with Nike support to track your steps and calories burned.

Price: 8GB – $149 and 16GB – $179

iPod Classic:

The iPod classic retains its classic status, garnering a size bump and nothing else at today’s event but for an iPod that some were predicting to be put out to pasture an increase to 160 GBs and no price jump makes for a decent update.

iPod Shuffle:

The shuffle also saw a price cut today and got new colors and a special stainless steel edition. During the event Apple announced that new headphones would be available which could control the tiny player from manufacturers such as Sony, V-Moda and others. For more info on the iPod Shuffle special edition be sure to check out SlashGear’s hands on.

Prices:

While I was disappointed by the lack of a camera on the new iPod Touch, or iPod Touch 3g as some are calling the 3rd generation device all was not lost. Apple bumped up the capacity of the iPod Touch to a whopping 64 GB’s of flash memory!

The cost for a new iPod Touch has also been lowered to $199 in order to make it more accessible to consumers. According to an interview given to the San Francisco Chronicle this magical” price point was one of the major reasons why there is no camera in the new iPod Touch.

Costs are as follows:

8 GB – $199

32 GB – $299

64GB – $399

Aside from Memory the new iPod Touch has some big improvements, noticeably that it’s faster. The new power is there to support the inclusion of Open GL which provides a better gaming platform pitting the device against the likes of the Sony PSP and the Nintendo DS when it comes to gaming. At the event several games were demo’d which showcased the new power including a FPS called Nova from Gameloft which Engadget called “Impressive” comparing it to Halo and noting a solid” frame rate in their liveblog of the event.

All of these new iPods are available right now from the Apple Store.
