Apple Announces iPhone 4S with Siri and Faster Processor is a post by Kevin Purcell from Notebooks.com.

Today Apple announced a new iPhone. In a less than revolutionary move it will be dubbed the iPhone 4S and looks almost identical to the iPhone 4 on the outside with just a few exceptions. The primary new features include a faster A5 processor and a feature that takes full advantage of the extra speed and some added memory capacity: Siri will help you interact with your iPhone in a new way – via speech instead of just typing.

Our sister site, GottaBeMobile.com has provided stellar coverage of the update. Here are some of the highlights that you can check out to get all the details on Apple’s new flagship smartphone, now on Sprint in addition to Verizon and AT&T starting October 12.

As we said, Siri stole the show taking the prime spot in Apple’s presentation today. With only minor hardware changes this press event focused on the software changes being added. Siri lets you control the iPhone by speaking to the phone with natural language. For example you can say, “Do I need a raincoat?” and it will check the weather and let you know if you it’s going to be sunny or rainy. It speaks back with a very natural sounding computer-generated voice. If it behaves as smoothly as the demo made it look, this will be a nice advancement for voice control.

In addition to the Siri Assistant, the iPhone 4S will add AirPlay mirroring to the iPhone. This should help people like teachers, business people who make presentations, gamers and those who love carrying a video library on their phone. Use either an Apple TV or the Dock to VGA or HDMI adapters to plug your iPhone 4S into an external display.

In a somewhat anti-climactic move the presentation today started off with the typical bragging about Apple numbers (sales figures, market share, etc) and then went on to show a new app. Cards will let you send cards via snail mail to your friends and family. This one feels like a gift to the post office rather than a revolutionary new product.

Another new feature of the software will be Find My Friends which can assist iPhone 4S users in locating people much like the Google Latitude app. Users can control when the feature shows their location. I know that if my kids had this on their phones, I’d be stoked. We’ll see who useful it will be when we can play with it.

To learn when the new phones will be available and where check out the post at GBM on availability. They share that you can get one on Sprint, AT&T and Verizon Wireless. Three iterations provide 16GB, 32GB or 64GB of storage for $199, $299 or $399 respectively. Both a white and black phone will be available. You can begin pre-ordering the phone starting October 7. No time was given.

Below is a video from BBC demoing the new phone:

If you already have an iPhone and don’t want the new Siri Assistant feature, you can get most of the new features via an iOS upgrade to iOS 5 which should drop October 12. And the new iCloud, Apple’s cloud storage, backup and sync service, will also be available then too with 5GB being free and additional storage for a price. Hit the link above for details.

However, if the cool new features don’t sway you, a great comparison between the iPhone and some popular alternatives will give all the details. Included in the comparison post are the following:

Samsung Galaxy S II with Android

BlackBerry Bold 9900

HTC Titan Windows Phone

HP Pre 3 with PalmOS

Of those, I’m eying the Samsung Galaxy S II. The new iPhone 4S was just not enough to make me switch back … I think!

Instead of a free iPod Touch, Apple is including a $100 iTunes gift card with the purchase of a new Mac. The gift card isn’t as good as a $200 iPod Touch, but it still offers a great extra on top of the traditional student discounts.

The Back to School iTunes gift card is worth $100 with no strings attached and you can use it in the Mac App Store to pick up some new back to school software or you can use it in the App Store to pick up some new iPhone and iPad apps. If you don’t need apps, the credit will also work in iTunes for music and movies or in iBooks.

To get a Mac with a free $100 App Store gift card you need to be accepted to a college, a current college student, a parent buying for a college student or a Faculty or Staff member teaching at any grade level. When you purchase a new Mac, you should shop in the online Apple Education store, bring proof that you are a student to an Apple Retail location or pick up your Mac at an authorized Campus Store.

In addition to the $100 worth of apps and media you get $50 to $100 off the most popular Macs including all of the Apple notebooks. Below you’ll find the student discount pricing on Apple notebooks.

MacBook – $899 – $100 off

MacBook Pro – $1,099 – $200 off

MacBook Air – $949 – $100 off

While we imagine that most students will find a way to use the $100 App credit, you can subsidize the cost of your MacBook purchase by selling the code on eBay or Craigslist for a $5 to $10 discount. This is an excellent way to drop the price of your new MacBook down to $800 — which is an amazing deal for a brand new MacBook.

The Apple Back to School deal runs from June 16th through September 20th and is valid on qualifying Mac models including the MacBook, MacBook Pro, MacBook Air and iMac notebooks purchased direct form Apple or from an Apple Authorized Campus Store.

Is Apple Dumping Intel for ARM? is a post by Kevin Purcell from Notebooks.com.

At our sister site Chuong Ngyen posted that Apple may be dumping Intel to switch their entire Mac lineup over to ARM processors. If true it would be the second time Apple has made such a switch, jumping from RISC to Intel in the last decade. Citing a rumor from SemiAccurate, a site the properly predicted the switch to ATI graphics, Chuong said that this would unify the Apple lineup of devices on the same platform. They already use an ARM based processor (the Apple A4 and A5 chips) in their iOS devices.

Imagine if all of those iOS devices and all Mac OS X computers ran on the same platform. The coming OS X Lion update is shifting towards a more iOS-like interface. Apple may want to take that a step further in the next couple of years so they can develop just one operating system.

If Apple had a custom ARM processor as their foundation, then they could maintain tighter control. Apple could prevent third-party manufacturers from making fake Macs called “Hackintoshes” where a user or company loads OS X on another Intel based computer.

Speaking of tight control, if Apple moves further in the direction of iOS, then every piece of software installed would come through an App store, like it does now on all iOS devices so long as they are not jailbroken. Apple would get an even bigger pool of money from which to innovate and dominate since they take 30% of all app profit from their app store.

The problem with this rumor is twofold, at the least. First, as Chuong points out, developers would not be happy. The number of developers who would have to shift in a totally new direction to support the change is far larger than it was years ago when Apple made the RISC to Intel jump. Developers are an important lifeline for any computing platform. Making them unhappy is not something you want to do.

Proponents of this shift, however, would say that OS X and iOS are not so far apart that developers could not port their apps. Look how many apps have been ported between the two. iOS would have to developer into a more powerful operating system to sustain some of the very advanced software that can run on OS X, but that is not an impossible evolution. Also, the huge number of iOS apps would be able to sustain the new computing platform. I spoke to one iOS developer who creates a Bible app that I use and he said he would be interested in that possibility.

The biggest issue is the current close partnership with Intel and Apple. They worked together to develop the Thunderbolt port and Apple was given early access to Intel’s new Z68 chipset. No other company has this in their computers, yet you can buy an Apple with it now. Apple is cut throat enough to take with one hand while preparing to stab Intel in the back with the other, but will they?

Based on past history it is not impossible to think of this happening. Until Apple officially responds or makes an announcement about the shift, this is all just a rumor and not a very strong rumor at that. As Chuong said at the end of his post, the folks at SemiAccurate seem to have an anti-Intel bias.

The latest version of OS X Lion was delivered to developers last Friday and included the ability to uninstall apps form your Mac just like you do on your iPhone.

The new method of uninstalling Mac Apps is just like you would find on your iPhone, and is apparently called up when using the new App Launchpad which provides easy access to your Mac Apps, much like the pages on your iPhone or iPad.

According to AppleiGuide, the feature can be accessed by clicking and holding on an app until the small “X” appears in the upper left corner. Users can click to delete the app from their Mac. Unfortunately this will only work with apps purchased from the Mac App Store.

Mac OS X Lion, OS X 10.7, is expected to be announced at WWDC in June and we expect to see many new features that deliver a more OS-like user experience. This move to a more iPhone style user interface has left some users wary, but it is likely a move by Apple to create a more seamless user experience across devices. This would make MacBooks and MacBook Pros more appealing to the average iPhone owner that has been contemplating a switch to Mac.

Apple Updates iTunes to 10.2.2 with Minor Bug Fixes is a post by Kevin Purcell from Notebooks.com.

Apple issued an update to iTunes bringing the release version number to 10.2.2. This update is not a major one. It has some minor bug fixes relating to syncing, iTunes store previews and stability. iTunes updates often come around the same time as an iOS release. The latest version of iOS 4.3.2 was recently released. One might guess that the iOS update was an anti-jailbreaking release since the previous version of iOS has already been jailbroken.

Here is the list of what Apple is saying is in this latest iTunes release.

iTunes 10.2.2 provides a number of important bug fixes, including:

• Addresses an issue where iTunes may become unresponsive when syncing an iPad.

• Resolves an issue which may cause syncing photos with iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch to take longer than necessary.

• Fixes a problem where video previews on the iTunes Store may skip while playing.

• Addresses other issues that improve stability and performance.

As always, to get the update on a Mac, go to the Apple menu and select the software update item. In Windows use the Help menu in iTunes where you will find the update menu item. The details about the security updates in this release are at the Apple website. Apple doesn’t say much about security fixes in order to protect those who do not update in a timely fashion.

If you haven’t already, be sure to get the latest updates for Safari (on both Windows and Mac) as well as the update for OS X which is a security update. We recommend getting all security updates on both Windows and Mac as soon as you can. Once the manufacturers release these updates nefarious people may try to exploit systems that don’t apply the patches in order to gain control of your system or do harm to your system. You un-patched system could be used to do harm to others through the Internet without you knowing it.

The new dock uses the same 30 pin design found on the standard iPhone and iPad cables, but with the inclusion of all these connectivity options, a single cable could pull data transfer duty on a wide array of devices.

The upgraded dock could be just a patent issued to protect an idea, but it is quite likely that Apple will actually bring this one to market. Patently Apple, a blog dedicated to Apple patents, feels that a hybrid dock connector could come into use this year, or sometime in 2012.

The ability to use one cable, to connect to speedy Thunderbolt connections on Macs and high end notebooks, as well as USB 3.0 which will eventually be standard on entry level Windows notebooks.

Right now, this doesn’t mean much to you the end consumer, other than to let you know that yes, Apple is committed to the dock connector, even if what’s at the other end of the cable changes.

Apple May be Working on MacBook and iPhone Battery Pack is a post by Josh Smith from Notebooks.com.

A recent Apple patent reveals that Apple may be working on their own external battery pack for Apple notebooks, like the MacBook Pro and MacBook Air and the iPhone.

If Apple does make an external battery pack for the MacBook Pro, don’t expect a bulky battery pack, the patent points to a battery that would be integrated into the charging cable. Obviously this would limit the power for a MacBook, but there are already numerous iPhone charging battery packs that are quite small and can double the battery life of your iPhone.

External Macbook Battery Patent

The patent also points to the possibility of wireless charging, allowing you to keep your MacBook Air charged up without even pluggin in.

While Apple notebooks get relatively good battery life, HyperJuice is well known for selling extended batteries that can keep your MacBook going for hours and hours longer than the standard battery.

When it comes to the iPhone, it’s hard to find a hardcore user without a Mophie Juice pack strapped to the back of the power hungry iPhone.

Apple has been battling HyperJuice for some time, on the argument that the Apple owns patents on the MagSafe adapter. HyperJuice has since changed the extended MacBook Pro batteries to use the Apple Airline adapter and is working on offering a kit to make your own connection.

It plays the music in a browser streamed from the Internet. Your music is available on any computer with an Internet browser and a decent Internet connection. mSpot also has mobile apps for playing your stored music.

When Amazon announced its Amazon Cloud Drive and Amazon Cloud Player music service, the world took note. mSpot has had this service for a while. mSpot was limited to 2GB of free storage. When Amazon offered 5GB, mSpot chose to match the offer.

mSpot works on both iOS and Android devices

Unlike Amazon, mSpot does not offer music for sale. To get more than 5GB with mSpot you will have to pay $3.99/month. Amazon will increase the free storage limit to 20GB if you buy an album from Amazon.

mSpot offers two storage options

mSpot does claim to do a good job of caching your music so that it won’t stop playing even when wireless data signals get week on a smartphone. They also offer a movie service. Some Internet enabled TVs have mSpot’s player built-in as well.
