Taking styling cues from one of the most recognizable sports cars and putting them in a notebook without looking cheesy is a tough thing to do, but with the ASUS Lamborghini VX6 Eee PC, ASUS has succeeded in creating a beautiful looking notebook that carries some of the refinements of the Lamborghini.

The ASUS Lamborghini VX6 Eee PC is a 12.1″ ultraportable notebook powered by a 1.8GHz dual core Intel Atom D525 processor which is supplements with NVIDIA ION 2 Graphics. In addition to the main power the VX6 has 2 GB DDR 3 RAM, USB 3.0, HDMI out and a sound system that has been engineered by Bang & Olufsen.

The 12.1″ display supports a 1366 x 768 resolution, the notebook runs Windows 7 Home Premium and with the 6-cell battery weighs in at 3.31 pounds.

The use of an Atom processor may not scream “Lambo” to you, but we expect that the dual core Atom CPU combined with a NVIDIA ION GPU will yield performance that exceeds a notebook with just an Atom processor. That said, we’ll have to reserve final judgement until we see some reviews coming out.

The ASUS Lamborghini VX6 Eee PC retails for $699 in the U.S. but you can find it as low as $674 with free shipping at B&H, according to Liliputing.

HP has just made the HP Slate 500 Tablet PC official. The HP Slate, shown off in early stages way back in January, has had a long road to becoming an official product but it is indeed real and will be available in the U.S. for $799 including a HP Slate Digital Pen, HP Slate Dock (with HDMI out) and HP Slate Portfolio.

The HP Slate 500 is aimed at corporate users who need to be able to access Windows application ins a more portable form factor. At 1.5 pounds the Intel Atom Z540 (1.86GHz) powered HP Slate 500 fits that bill. The 8.9″ capacitive screen offers a 1024 x 600 (or 1024 x768 for some apps) resolution while the Wifi and Bluetooth connectivity options provide on the go access to important systems.

The included Broadcom Crystal HD video accelerator should provide the power needed to display 1080P HD video on the slate. The HP Slate 500 comes with one built in USB 2.0 port for connecting a printer, keyboard or mouse as well as an SD card slot for easy access to pictures or to supplement the 64GB of built in flash memory. When connected to the HP Slate 500 dock users will gain a HDMI port to connect an external monitor and an additional two USB 2.0 ports.

The HP Slate 500 has two cameras, a front facing VGA webcam for chatting and a 3MP camera on the rear that can be used to capture photo and video. The HP Slate 500 comes with a 2-cell 30WHr battery, but no estimated life was given.

The HP Slate will come with Evernote pre-installed to allow users to use the HP Slate Digital Pen or your finger for taking notes in meetings or inking an email. The Digital Pen uses a Wacom active digitizer for stylus based note taking. According to the experts at GottaBeMobile the HP Slate 500 likely has N-Trig duosense technology which offers the best of both worlds for touchscreen use.

If you’re a fan of sports car themed notebooks you’ll be happy to know that it looks like the Acer Ferarri One mni-notebook, will be getting an update to the latest AMD Ontario processor and the Asus Eee PC Lamborghici VX6 will be powering up with a new dual core Intel Atom processor as well

The Acer news comes from Digitimes which is pointing to an update in Late 2010, but according to Liliputing that may be ambitious since the AMD Ontario processor is publicly set for a debut in early 2011.

The Ontario processor will be part of the Fusion line and use the Bobcat platform which claims to offer 90% of the power of a mainstream processor but with less power and a smaller size.

Intel (INTC) announced this morning that it was purchasing all the outstanding shares of McAfee (MFE) for a total of $7.68 billion in a move to further integrate software and hardware security.

The purchase has been approved by both boards and is expected to be completed after shareholder approval and regulatory clearances.

For consumers this may signal a tighter integration of security integration in notebooks, netbooks and soon mobile phones that will be running Intel processors. In the commercial sector the acquisition will enable Intel to provide enhanced security solutions in embedded devices like TVs, Cars, medical devices and ATMs.

Speaking on the acquisition Paul Otellini, Intel President and CEO said,

With the rapid expansion of growth across a vast array of Internet-connected devices, more and more of the elements of our lives have moved online. In the past, energy-efficient performance and connectivity have defined computing requirements. Looking forward, security will join those as a third pillar of what people demand from all computing experiences.

Adding,

The addition of McAfee products and technologies into the Intel computing portfolio brings us incredibly talented people with a track record of delivering security innovations, products and services that the industry and consumers trust to make connecting to the Internet safer and more secure,”

The Asus Eee PC 1215N which has been getting a lot of attention lately thanks to a spec change which gives the 1215N a 1.8GHz dual-core Atom D525 CPU finally has a release date of late August and a price of, “below $500″ according to Engadget.

The Eee PC 1215N is a very spec’d out netbook packing NVIDIA ION 2 technology, Optimus technology, USB 3.0 and optional Bluetooth 3.0 into a 12.1″ thin netbook package.

The processor used in this netbook is more typically found in a nettop device that doesn’t need to be concerned about battery life, but there is hope that with the intelligent graphics switching of Optimus the Eee PC 1215N will be able to deliver acceptable battery life.

Asus Eee PC 1215 Ships in August for Under $500 is a post by Josh Smith from Notebooks.com.

Digitimes has reported that ASUS and Acer may be waiting until mid-August to release new netbook models.

Acer and ASUS have disclosed that they will be observing market demand before launching any new netbook models. Instead of launching new models, both companies plan on depleting their current entry-level and ultra-thin notebook inventory.

Looking deeper into the matter, Intel plans on releasing the dual-core Atom N550 processor later this year. This processor offers a significant computing power upgrade for a minimal fee above that of the current Atom N455 and N475 processors. This news may be another powerful motive behind Acer and ASUS’s recent decision.

Acer has already revealed plans to integrate this new dual-core Atom N550 processor into is Acer Aspire One D255 and perhaps we will see it in announced as powering more netbooks soon.
