Looks like HP isn’t abandoning the netbook form factor completely, though it’s no surprise that the latest 10-inch offering from the company is aimed at the education market.

The $399 HP Mini 1104 is pretty standard netbook fare — 2.8 pounds, dual core 1.6-GHz Intel Atom N2600 CPU, 2GB RAM, 1024 x 600 display, 320GB hard drive — and about the same as last year’s Mini 1103, just with appropriately updated specs. It’s also $100 more.

The outside appears unchanged, which is not a bad thing. The Mini 1100 series can boast comfortable keyboards, usable touchpads, and long battery life. HP claims that the 1104 will last 9 hours.

The basic design isn’t unattractive, but highlights that this isn’t a netbook built for the consumer market. Students and business professionals will appreciate having TPM chips embedded, Computrace Pro, and available mobile broadband.

Still, consumers shouldn’t write this off just because it’s not flashy. Solid, dependable netbooks are getting harder to come by these days. The fact that the Mini 1104 can take a few bumps and has a spill-resistant keyboard is a big plus.

Corporations and institutions have a few configuration options for the Mini 1104, but if you’re buying individual units from HP.com you only have two choices. The $399 model includes the specs listed above, the $469 model has the mobile broadband module.

HP has updated the HP Mini 210 netbook with a new design and look as well as the addition of Beats Audio, a first in an HP netbook. The new HP Mini 210 will be available starting on June 15th with a new lower $299 starting price tag.

HP Mini 210 Quick Specs

The new HP mini 210, updated for summer 2011, will use the Intel Atom N455 processor (expect Intel Atom N570 options soon), come standard with 1GB RAM and include a 250GB hard drive. The Mini 210 keeps the same 10.1″ display with a 1024 x 600 resolution. The Mini 210 also includes wireless networking and a built in webcam.

The HP Mini 210 comes with a spill resistant 93% full size keyboard and a mousepad with built in buttons. Also included is the new HP QuickWeb 3.0 which allows you to quickly hop online to check email or social networks in less time than it would take Windows to boot.

HP Mini 210 Hands On Video

HP Mini 210 Design Changes

The new HP Mini 210 keeps much of what we liked on the last version, included a 6 cell battery that fits into the body without jutting out the rear, a fold flat display and a collection of colors. New to the updated Mini 210 is a wrap around color, that starts on the lid and continues over to the palmrest for a more unified look.

The new HP Mini will come in charcoal, crimson red, luminous rose, ocean drive and sweet purple.

HP Mini 210 Beats Audio

The HP Mini 210 comes, for the first time, with Beats Audio. Beats is an audio technology exclusive to HP that delivers a higher quality audio experience, with music that sounds like how the artiste intended it.

On a netbook, you obviously won’t be experiencing music exactly how the artist meant it to be experienced, but HP has taken steps to ensure that the line out, or headphone jack, is optimized to deliver the best audio possible. You should be able to notice this with a decent pair of headphones or when connected to a stereo system. The speakers in the Mini 210 won’t knock your socks off, but HP claims that they are optimized to deliver the best sound possible in a small netbook form factor.

HP Mini 210 Battery Life

The standard 6 cell battery is rated for 9.5 hours of battery life. Based on past models, this will likely be less in real life, but the netbook should last most of the day.

HP Mini 210 Pricing and Availability

The HP Mini 210 will be available on June 15, 2011 with a starting price of $299.

The HP Mini 5103 netbook is the latest business class netbook from HP, continuing on the style and design of the HP Mini 5102 (review), offering users a very portable package with more durability and extra features than we typically see in a netbook. The price is a bit higher for these extra features, but well worth it for netbook purchasers who plan to use the small device for business,

For a look at how the Mini 5103 is different from consumer netbooks, take a look at our 10 Ways Business Netbooks are different than Consumer Netbooks.

HP Mini 5103 Quick Specs:

The HP Mini 5103 we tested has an Intel Atom N455 processor , 1 GB RAM, a 160GB hard drive, 10.1″ screen (1024×600) and a 4-cell battery. This specific model is outfitted with a capacitive touchscreen that allows you to use your fingers, much like on the iPad or the Acer Aspire 5745PG

Who is this Notebook For?

The HP Mini 5103 netbook is great for use as a companion computer for business professionals and students who want a bit more durability than a consumer netbook can give. The Touchscreen model and optional handle provide additional incentive for education and institutional users to check this netbook out.

Build and Design:

The HP Mini 5103 is designed to meet the needs of a business user, which means an all metal chassis and special coating on the keys to provide a longer life during heavy use. The Mini 5103 comes with a magnesium alloy lid that does a good job at keeping fingerprints off and provides additional protection. The hinges and the entire notebook feel very sturdy, especially when compared to most consumer grade netbooks. Another business class feature is the inclusion of a spill-resistant keyboard which is great news for accident prone travelers and IT administrators deploying this device in schools.

Screen:

The HP Mini 5103 has numerous screen options. There are choices for an HD screen (1366 x 768) as well as the option for a touch screen. The review unit HP lent us is equippped with a 10.1″ 1024 x 600 touch screen display. While we normally would want a higher resolution sreen we found that combined with touch the lower resolution was in our favor; especially with a smaller screen. The screen has good viewing angles and was usable in the car and in an outdoor setting.

When it came to touch, Windows 7 hampered the usefulness thanks to troublesome navigation. We did find that my installing Mirabyte FrontFace, a program that provides a touch friendly interface, we used touch more often. Ultimatley the usefullness of this option will come down to the user’s habits. We wouldn’t add the touch option ourselves, but there are users who will want it.

Mouse and Keyboard:

In addition to coming with a durakey coating that extends the life of the key coating by 50% (according to HP) and being spill resistant the HP Mini 5103′s keyboard is pretty spectacular. It remains one of the only netbook keyboards which we could type a full review on without giving up much speed or accuracy — or getting a hand cramp. The keys are well spaced, offer good feedback and are not mushy.

The mousepad on the other hand leaves something to be desired. HP brings over the small mousepad from the HP Mini 5102, which is precise and gets teh job done; but it feels out of place on such a high quality netbook. We really hope that the next business class netbook from HP gets an upgrade to a wider mousepad with integrated buttons that supports two finger scrolling.

Processor and Performance:

The HP Mini 5103 looks pretty similar on the outside to the old Mini 5102 becasue many of the upgrades are internal. Our model comes with a enwer Intel Atom N455 processor that supports DDR3 RAM and you an configure the Mini 5103 with a new dual-core Atom N550 processor which HP claims will deliver a performance bump and enable HD video watching without the need for a broadcom accelerator.

As mentioned, our review unit had a single core processor, and no broadcom accelerator, which meant we had less power inside. Still, we were able to do everything you would expect on a netbook — surfing the web, watching YouTube videos, editing office documents and keeping in touch with business associates.

Storage:

It is worth noting that the HP Mini 5103 comes with a faster 7200RPM hard drive which is equipped with drop protection that will stop the hard drive from spinning if it senses that it is falling.

Heat and Noise:

During our use the HP Mini 5103 did not put off a lot f heat. The fan did run quite a bit even when we were only using Chrome with several tabs, but the heat was never an issue. As mentioned, the fan ran a lot and you could hear it which may bother some users. The noise is noticeable enough that it deserves a mention, but not so loud as to detract form the overall use of the Mini 5103.

Battery:

The HP Mini 5103 comes with two battery options, a 6-cell which HP rates at 10 hours, and a 4-cell battery which we have and is rated for 4.5 hours. During our testing the 4-cell battery only lasted 2.5 to 3 hours with the screen on full brightness and surfing the web over WiFi. If you dial down the brightness all the way you may be able to get closer to the 4.5 hour rating; assuming you stick to simple web work.

One extra touch we love is that the battery has a built in life indicator so you don’t need to boot up to see how much battery life you have left.

Connectivity:

The HP Mini 5103 has more ports than you’ll find on some netbooks with more than enough to meet most business users’ needs including a USB port that can charge your phone.

Left (left to right): Power, VGA, Vent, USB 2.0, USB 2.0

Right (left to right): SD card reader, Microphone, Headphone, USB sleep and charge, Ethernet, Kensington Lock

Front (left to right): HDD indicator light, Wireless switch

Software:

The HP Mini 5103 comes with some extra software you won’t find on most consumer netbooks. First up are the quickboot environments which you can load up as the computer boots for faster access to your information. HP QuickWeb gets you to the Internet faster than booting into Windows. HP QuickLook gets you to your email, calendar and Outlok information and what HP calls Daystarter that offers a fast glance at what’s on your schedule for the day. The catch is that for HP Daystarter to work you’ll need Outlook installed.

That’s a catch because HP is aiming this as a companion PC, a second or third device, that doesn’t need an expensive license for Microsoft Office because HP pre-loads Corel Office. Corel Office lets you edit and share Microsoft Office formatted documents on the go.

Further playing into the companion PC idea is HP QuickSync which allows you to sync folders between up to 3 computers. The idea is similar to Dropbox, but the HP QuickSync tool has no size limitation.

Value: The HP Mini 5103 offers enough extras to account for the higher price over consumer netbooks and is a good choice for students and business users who are looking for a device that will last longer than a traditional netbook.

The HP Mini 5103 is available in various configurations starting at $399 from numerous retailers, or direct from HP.

Conclusion:

HP didn’t change much on the 5103 which, other than the small mousepad, we are OK with. The business class netbook performs well and continues to have the best netbook keyboard we’ve seen. If you need a netbook that is designed to last longer and be more durable then you need to heck out the Mini 5103 — especially if you type alot.

Pros:

Durable design

highly viewable screen – even outdoors

Great keyboard

Extra software

Cons:

Small mousepad

The HP Mini 210 netbook computer isn’t a new model, but HP is offering some new options in both color on the outside and the processor inside. Buyers can now choose between the Intel Atom N455, N475 and now the dual core Intel Atom N550 processor.

The internal specs of the HP Mini 210 are pretty much the same including 1 GB of RAM (2 GB max), up to a 250 GB hard drive running at a fast 7200 rpm, Intel Graphics Media Accelerator or the optional Broadcom Crystal HD Enhanced Video Accelerator, and up to a 1366×768 HD display. HP adds to this Dolby Advanced Audio for added multimedia enjoyment when listening to the sound in movies or music.

The 6-cell battery is rated for 10.75 hours, which will shrink in real world use but will still likely equate to a day-long battery life. Users who want quick access to the web or their documents will enjoy the HP QuickWeb feature that allows you to boot into a browser in seconds to quickly check your email or online calendar.

On the outside the HP Mini 210 can be configured with one of five colors including charcoal, crimson red, lavender frost, luminous rose or ocean drive.

The HP Mini 210 with the Intel Atom N550 processor is available starting at $329.

Following up on the success of the metal alloy encased HP Mini 5102 HP has announced the HP Mini 5103, a refreshed business class netbook with a new dual Core Intel Atom N550 processor and a new espresso color. In addition to the new options, this durable netbook retains its spill resistant keyboard, long battery life, touch screen and handle options that have made it a hit in schools and for traveling executives.

The HP Mini 5103 comes with a 10.1″ screen that is available in a touch configuration that closes on a 95% full size, edge to edge, keyboard. The screen can be configured in a standard 1024 x 768 resolution or in 1366×768 and paired with a Broadcom HD Accelerator card for an HD display capable of handling 720P and 1080P video; locally and online.

One of the biggest selling points of this business class series is the built-in durability that doesn’t add bulk or a huge price increase. In addition to the anodized-aluminum case, the keyboard is spill resistant with an HP duracoat finish that helps the lettering last 50% longer than standard keys.

The durability, touch and handle options as well as the relatively low price tag have made the earlier versions of the HP Mini 5103 popular in educational settings where students are using them in the classroom and even taking them home. Some school shave even opted to include integrated Wireless for a high speed connection anywhere.

The HP Min 5103 offers an optional Mobile broadband solution powered by GOBI and an optional GPS.

For users who need to get a quick look at the day ahead or look up an item online but don’t want to wait for the netbook to boot into Windows the HP Mini 5103 is equipped with HP DayStarter and HP Quickweb which give you access to your email/calendar and the Internet respectively.

The HP Mini 5103 comes standard with a 6 cell battery rated for 4.5 hours and an optional 6 cell battery which can deliver over 10 hours of battery life.

The HP Mini 5103 with dual-core Intel Atom N550 processor will be available from HP on September 17th starting at $399.99.

According to the HP Italy website we may soon be seeing the HP Mini 5103 netbook, a refresh of the HP Mini 5102 business class netbook we reviewed last month.

The new model looks like it will come with an Intel Atom N455 or N475 processor running at either 1.66GHz or 1.86GHz respectively and will support faster DDR3 RAM; though it’s not clear that users will see a large performance bump due to these upgrades.

The HP Mini 5103 will keep many of the features that set it apart from consumer netbooks including a durable metal alloy body, faster hard drive and longer battery life. It will also likely keep the price premium that these features come with. The HP Mini 5102 had a base price of $458, compared to the starting price of $329 for the HP Mini 210 consumer netbook.

No official word on availability, though the HP Mini 5102 is no longer available for order on the HP website so we expect to see availability in the near future.

What separates a business class netbook like the HP Mini 5102 from its consumer oriented cousin the HP Mini 210? It might not be immediately apparent if you haven’t seen a business netbook in person, but after this post you’ll know what separates a business machine from a couch surfer’s gadget.

Figuring out which type of netbook, business or consumer, is best for you will ultimately come down to how you use the netbook and what your needs are. While it’s important to consider features only found in business netbooks, it doesn’t mean a business netbook is right for you.

For the comparison we tested the HP Mini 5102 business netbook and the popular HP Mini 210 netbook that’s designed for consumers. For more details on each of these netbooks read our HP Mini 5102 review and HP Mini 210 review.

Left HP Mini 210 Glossy Screen; Right HP Mini 5102 Matte Screen

Display: The display is one of the most important aspects of a netbook that will see a lot of use. While you will see various resolutions, 1024×600 up to 1366×768 on both types of netbooks; business netbooks often have a few more options to aid mobile workers. The most noticeable feature is the option for a matte screen. As you can see in the comparison above, the matte screen on the HP Mini 5102 doesn’t reflect the sun and your surroundings, making it much easier to work outdoors or under harsh lighting. Additionally, the 5102 can be outfitted with a touchscreen option that is useful in education settings and for certain business uses.

Keyboard: Most netbook keyboards have improved greatly over the past year, but business class netbooks generally have better keyboards. In the case of the Mini 5102 versus the Mini 210, the keyboard on the 5102 is clearly much better.

Left Mini 210; Right Mini 5102

Not only does the Mini 5102 have a slightly bigger keyboard area that extends to the edge of the device, but the keys also have more feedback and a slight indentation that makes it easier to type. The keys also have a durable finish that keeps the keyboard looking new and keeps the white letters from wearing off. The HP Mini 210 had a good typing experience, but in back and forth testing, the keyboard on the 5102 clearly offered a better option for extended typing sessions.

Durability: On top of the Duracoat keyboard finish found on the 5102, most business class netbooks will feature aluminum or magnesium components that are more durable than the plastic components used on most consumer netbooks. This metallic case and sturdier hinges help the business netbooks handle the stresses of life on the road, stand up to scratches and survive minor drops and bumps. Many consumer notebooks, like the HP Pavilion line, have gone to metal cases in the latest generation so it’s possible that someday we’ll see an aluminum or magnesium case as the standard on consumer netbooks as well.

Another reason that business netbooks are more durable is that IT departments expect these netbooks to match the quality of business notebooks like the HP ProBook notebooks. Additionally, businesses typically expect computers to last 3-5 years while consumers will often upgrade faster.

Service and Support: In most cases if you call for the manufacturer for support on a consumer netbook or notebook you will be routed to a call center in another country which may or may not be able to solve your problem. Business class devices receive a higher level of support that includes 24/7 phone support based in the States, a 1 year battery warranty as well as the option to purchase warranty upgrades that include on-site service.

Battery Life: When you’re on the go and possibly miles from the closest outlet battery life is incredibly important. With this in mind, the battery life on business class netbooks s generally longer than that on consumer devices. Recent advances to the consumer netbooks that are arriving on the market today are closing this gap, but in our comparison of the HP Mini 210 to the HP Mini 5102, the 5102 was able to achieve almost double the battery life of the Mini 210; up to 10 hours with the extended battery. The Mini 5102 also has a battery life indicator LED so that users can quickly see how much life is left without turning on the netbook.

Operating System: Pick a consumer netbook, any consumer netbook, and odds are the device is running Windows 7 Starter. If you order direct from HP you can choose Windows XP or Windows 7 Home premium, but in the store the sole option is Windows 7 Starter. Business netbooks like the 5102 on the other hand comes with many more choices to fit different corporate environments and needs. When configuring the 5102 users can select one of seven operating systems including versions of Windows 7, Windows XP Home, Windows XP Professional, SUSE Linux and FreeDOS.

Style and Size: One edge that consumer netbooks have over most business oriented devices is that they tend to be slimmer and offer more colorful options. These two features are much more important to consumers than they are to business buyers. That said business netbooks aren’t relegated to the corporate black anymore. The HP Mini 5102 comes in black, blue or red and still looks nice, but consumer netbooks are still generally a little bit slimmer and a little better suited to the average consumer’s taste.

Entertainment: If you’re looking for entertainment options on a netbook then your first stop should be a consumer model. For HD video and even light gaming you can look for a netbook with NVIDIA ION technology that will provide more entertainment options than business class netbooks. You may even find an HDMI port on some consumer models tucked in with an HD accelerator for better HD video playback. In many cases you can configure a business class netbook with an HD accelerator but you won’t find ION or other premium netbook entertainment features.

Configurations: Another difference is that consumer netbooks are usually available in many different models and configurations, but they don’t offer the same build-to-order options that business netbooks offer. If purchased directly from the manufacturer consumer netbooks do offer some options, but when compared to the number and type of options available to customize a business class netbook to a company’s needs the difference is apparent.

See in person: If seeing a netbook, and getting your own hands on in a store, is important to you then consumer netbooks have a clear advantage. You can walk into Best Buy, Staples and other retail locations to see how you like the look and feel of a consumer netbook, comparing it to several other models. But you won’t find a business netbook like the 5102 on the shelf of your local big box electronics shop.

Price: Consumer netbooks are cheaper than business class netbooks. In our comparison the Mini 5102 starts at $458 while the Mini 210 can be purchased for $329 from HP or as low as $269 on Amazon.com. Many of the reasons mentioned like durability, support options and more play into the higher price of the business netbooks. If you’re considering a purchase, keep in mind that, the old adage, “you get what you pay for” holds true.

These are some of the most noticeable differences between consumer and business class netbooks. While these statements won’t hold true for every single consumer or business netbook you should have a better understanding of what each class offers. After you think about how and where you will use a netbook this information will help you figure out which better fits your needs. Just because you’re a traveling businessperson doesn’t mean an HP Mini 210 won’t be the best fit, nor does it mean that college students or average home users wouldn’t benefit from some business class features.

If you have additional questions about either netbook or the differences let us know in the comments. Stay tuned, later this month we will take a look at two similar 14″ notebooks, one for business users and the other for consumers, and see if the differences are the same.

The Intel Atom N455 and N475 do not bring about major changes to the Atom lineup but notably it does provide support for DDR3 RAM in the Mini 210 series; though the system still only supports a total of 2GB. The new N455 and N475 have a higher TPD rating than the N450 and N470 processors they are replacing, 6.5 W versus 5.5 W, but we’ll have to wait for hands on to see if this translates into a power increase that is noticeable to the average consumer.

Netbooks like the HP Mini 210 equipped with one of the new Intel Atom N455 or N475 processors will still only be capable of basic netbook tasks and users seeking to play HD video should look at the $40 Mini 210 upgrade that includes the Intel Atom N475 processor and Broadcom Crystal HD Video accelerator.

The HP Mini 210 we reviewed had an Intel Atom N450 processor, 1 GB RAM, 160GB hard drive and a 10.1″ 1366 x 768 display.

Who is this Notebook for?

The HP Mini 210 is ideal for a college student, home user or on-the-go professional who doesn’t need the durability and long battery life of the HP Mini 5102 business class netbook.

HP Mini 210 Video Overview: HP Mini 210 video review

Display:

The display on the HP Mini 210 that we reviewed performed well. The 1366 x 768 resolution provided enough room to work on two documents side by side and the screen was able to go bright enough to satisfy my needs. Unfortunately the display is glossy, which means using it outdoors or in some bright lighting situations can be a pain. It’s not the glossiest display I’ve used and if you don’t plan to use the Mini 210 outdoors it may not be an issue for you.

The display does tilt back to a comfortable angle for a comfortable viewing angle on a table, couch or in your lab in the car.

Keyboard and mouse:

The keyboard on the HP Mini 210 is very easy to type on. The island style that HP went with offers good spacing and enough feedback to be usable even for extended typing sessions. Unfortunately the keys are not raised as much as those on the HP Mini 5102 netbook, nor do they have the slight curve on the top which is very finger friendly. All in all, still a wonderful keyboard and I am glad to see that they didn’t shortchange any of the important keys to fit the whole keyboard in this small package.

The mousepad on the HP Mini 210 is both a joy and at times a frustration. The mousepad is very large for a netbook and quite responsive which is always a plus, but to provide such a large mousing surface HP did away with dedicated buttons. The buttons are built into the mousing surface and the whole pad can be clicked. Ultimately, what this means is that you’ll end up zooming, or initiating another multi-gesture command when all you’re really trying to do is prepare to click the mouse button. You can get around this issue by re-training yourself or using an external mouse but it would be great if the mouse could tell when you were on a button and disregard multi-gesture commands.

Battery:

The 3-cell battery on the HP Mini 210 which we reviewed offered less than stellar battery life with 2 hours and 25 minutes with the screen at full brightness and Pandora playing. The optional 6-cell battery which other reviewers have used offers much more impressive battery life. With netbooks commonly approaching double-digit battery life it’s hard to overlook such low numbers. If you need a longer battery life make sure you pick up the 6-cell battery or both.

Video and Audio:

Even though the HP Mini 210 we had was not equipped with the Broadcom HD accelerator, and wasn’t prepared for HD flash playback, it did handle SD streaming video well. We tested out Netflix and Youtube on Full screen and had no issues with either.

Processing:

The HP Mini 210 is equipped with an Intel Atom N450 processor and 1GB RAM. This processor with just 1GB of RAM was much more usable for multitasking than the HP Mini 10000 that I own when equipped with 2GB of RAM. I was able to have 2 Chrome windows open, Windows Media Player going, Internet Explorer open, be tying n word and and alt-tab between programs with ease. I even had a Youtube clip playing in one of my many Chrome tabs. You won’t want to use this for editing a lot of photos or working on video but it performs well for most of the tasks home users need and would serve as a companion PC to a college student or professional very well.

Connectivity:

The HP Mini 210 has plenty of ports to keep you connected.

Left (left to right): Power, VGA, Vents, HDD Indicator, USB, Headphones

Right (left to right): Multi-card reader, Power switch, Vent, USB 2.0, USB 2.0, Ethernet, Kensington

Upgrades:

Another really nice feature of the HP Mini 210 is that you can swap out the RAM in 20 seconds as well as gain access to all of the internals at the same time. Here’s a video showing you how to take the HP Mini 210 apart.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uyUfs788cJk

Conclusion:

There’s a reason the HP Mini 210 is top selling netbook on Amazon. The beautiful display, easy to use keyboard and slim attractive design compensate for the less than stellar battery life and the interesting mousepad. Home users looking for a machine to check email and surf on the couch will love this machine. It is also a great choice for a back to school laptop when paired with another computer or an external keyboard, mouse and monitor. Given that you can find the Mini 210 from $259 it’s hard to pass this netbook up.

Pros:

Slim design

Good keyboard

Easy to upgrade

1366×768 resolution

Price

Cons:

Less than stellar battery life

Mousepad can be finicky

It’s easier than ever to upgrade the RAM in the HP Mini 210 or Mini 210 HD from 1GB to 2GB and you don’t even need any tools.

To swap the Ram on the HP Mini 210, just remove the battery, push in on the orange tabs and pull up on the back of the case. After a bit of resistance you’ll have access to the RAM and all of the HP Mini 210 internals, including the hard drive.

Here’s a video showing you how to upgrade the RAM in the HP Mini 210 in less than 20 seconds.
