This sleek, black computer with an attractive pattern on the lid has nice looks. At $499.99 it is about $130 less than Staples’ current price.

The Dell Inspiron M5030 comes with an AMD Athlon II Dual-core Mobile Processor P340 running at 2.2GHz. It also has 4GB of memory and a big 500GB hard drive. These specs don’t blow you away, but they are decent enough for everyday tasks and some light entertainment uses. The laptop has ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4250 graphics which is shared video memory. That means this is not a gaming system, but can handle light duty.

Included in the system are an 8X DVD burner, a built-in 1.3MP webcam, and a 3-in-1 card reader.

This is a heavy system, so it is primarily a desktop replacement system. The PC Magazine review listed at Staples said the computer did not handle their application tests well and had very poor battery life with sub 4 hour performance.

The display on these new versions of the Dell XPS line are powered by NVIDIA GeForce 400 series graphics with 1GB of graphics memory and Optimus technology, which will lower power consumption when not needed but boost it for those tasks that need the extra boost of graphics power.

Added to the new graphics capability is JBL sound. The speakers are JBL brand and will also have Waves MaxxAduio 3 processing technology for what they call the loudest, clearest and best laptop sound” the company offers. There is a 12-watt subwoofer on the 15 and 17-inch versions. The speakers are capable of 22W peak audio performance.

The internal power of the XPS line will come from Intel Core i processors.

Notebook manufacturer’s don’t often brag about their webcams; they are usually just throw in features. But Dell is boasting the first integrated webcams capable of HD video streaming.” They also are co-branding with Skype calling these the first computers to carry the Skype-certified” moniker.

Dell has set the starting price for the XPS laptops are at $899 for the XPS 14, $849 for the XPS 15 and $949 for the XPS 17. They are available now.

I sat down with Hari Ganti and Alan Sicher for a demo of the GPS-enabled Dell Mini 10. Dell has partnered with Skyhook so that users’ locations are accurate even when a GPS signal is not available.

The GPS navigation application is called CoPilot. It’s very simple to use and it’s much easier to enter destinations using a full keyboard than a touchscreen. Of course a netbook isn’t the best form-factor to mount on your dashboard.

Dell Wireless 700 will be a $69 upgrade on customizable Dell Mini 10′s. It will be available the second week of July, 2009.

The Dell Mini 12 will be available in November with a starting price of $600. The entry-level Mini 12 will include a 40GB hard drive, a 3-cell battery and a 1.3GHz Intel Atom Z520 processor. Dell claims this configuration will get about three-hours of battery life.

Other versions of the Dell Mini 12 will come with a 6-cell battery that will run for up to seven hour and a 1.6Ghz Intel Atom Z530 processor and either a 60GB or 80GB hard drive. Vista will be the only choice initially, but Dell plans on offering a Ubuntu version and Windows XP version in the near future.

I recommend waiting for the Ubuntu or Windows XP Mini 12. APC got to review the Mini 12 already and it really struggles to run Vista Home Basic :

Yet we’re not convinced that shoehorning Vista into a netbook is the path to true wisdom, especially when that netbook hits the memory ceiling at 1GB. That’s barely enough for the OS on its own, let alone once you run some security software in the background and a fire up any halfway decent application.

Using the Mini 12 proved our point: screens were slow to draw, the little spinning wheel was forever popping up to do its thing, and with more than a few windows open things get downright skittish.

The Mini 12 needed a full two minutes to get to a usable desktop although standby and resume took about five seconds each, and those are the most likely modes that a netbook user will rely on between sessions.

The Dell Mini 12 weighs in at about 2.75 pounds, which is about half the weight of Dell’s next biggest Inspiron- the Dell Inspiron 13. Of course the Inspiron 13 is a completely different animal.

“I was on Dell.com and noticed the Dell Inspiron 15 (1525). When I click on it I don’t see that computer, I get taken to a Dell Inspiron 1525 page. Is there a new model and is the Inspiron 15 any better than the Inspiron 1525?”

The simple answer is No. In The an effort to simplify naming conventions, Dell is trimming down their Inspiron notebook names to reflect the size of the display. The new Inspiron names make a lot more sense but during the transition the Inspiron 15/Inspiron 1525 name is being used interchangably.

Until now Dell Insprinon model numbers have been used four digits long, with the first two signifying the size of the screen, and the last two differntiating new models from each other. For example, last year you could buy a Dll Insprion 1520. The current Intel-powered Dell Inspiron 15-inch is the “1525: and the AMD powered model (available only from retailers) is the 1526.

All these model numbers can get confusing since they’re tough for the average notebook shopper to decipher and they change quite often.

From a marketing perspective I think it’s also better for Dell to have a consistent name for their products. Simpler and shorter laptop names is definitely an industry trend.

This year HP did something similar when it introduced the HP Pavilion dv4 (14-inch display), dv5(15-inch display) and dv7 (17-inch display). Previous models had unwieldy names like the “HP Pavilion dv6000.”
