You’re not really getting a deal so much as a bargain bin product. And for laptops, this often leads to heartache and wasted cash.

Best Buy had some of the better notebook deals on Black Friday and the same is true today. Here is the cream of that crop.

Toshiba Satellite C655D — $249 | HP Pavilion 2000 — $299

These two laptops may surprise shoppers with their low prices considering that both have 15.6-inch screens and are thus not netbooks. Thing is, they both have AMD Fusion E series processors inside, which means they have similar power to affordable ultraportables like the HP Pavilion dm1, which are just a step above netbooks in terms of power. So even though these are the same size as “regular” notebooks, you’re not going to get stunning performance out of them. As long as you know that going in, go ahead and get one of these if you want. It’ll be fine for basic tasks like browsing the web, working on office documents, and streaming videos.

Gateway NV55C57U — $309 | Lenovo IdeaPad 1068AFU — $319

These 15.6-inch laptops are so inexpensive because they have Intel Pentium processors inside, which are several years old. Again, you’re not going to see very strong performance from these models, but they’re okay to buy if you’re going for something basic.

HP Pavilion dv6 — $429

This notebook has a pretty powerful processor for the price and should deliver great performance for most mainstream users. And if you love to play casual games or MMORPGs or even other less-intense PC games, this model offers enough oomph for that.

Samsung RC512 — $499

This laptop actually has some good highlights, including a DVD drive that can read Blu-ray discs and built-in Wireless Display technology from Intel. It has 2 USB 3.0 ports, a definite plus, and 4G/WiMAX mobile broadband built-in. The Core i3 processor means it won’t be a workhorse, but for most mainstream users this provides plenty of power.

Apple MacBook Pro 13 — $1,049 | Apple MacBook Pro 15 — $1,599

Best Buy is offering $150 – $200 off these MacBook Pros, which you generally don’t see discounted unless they’re refurbished.

Adobe Photoshop Lightroom is a professional photo organizer and editor. Photographers use this application to perform most tasks that they used to do in a dark room. While it’s a fantastic tool for performing most tasks, it is not a replacement for Adobe Photoshop, which features pixel-level control, multiple layers and other advanced features.

Adobe.com is running a promo on Lightroom 3 for Cyber Monday as well, but there’s only a $100 discount at the company’s site.

This 15.6″ HP is packed with a fast Intel Core i7 720QM 1.6GHz processor and 6GB of RAM. That is one of the fastest processors you will see in a notebook, which means power hungry activities like video & image editing, and every other basic task the user performs will not be slowed too much by the CPU. To add to the notebook’s speed there is a 500GB hard drive spinning at 7200rpm. Only a solid state drive is likely to show up in a consumer notebook that will be a lot faster than that. And for some gaming power the computer has an ATI  Mobility Radeon HD 5650 graphics chip. Those are good mobile graphics chips meaning gaming should not be a problem for this machine.

One disappointment in a system like this is the display resolution. It is a paltry 1366×768. However that does put it at this price point. That said, we’d like to see a little higher resolution to go along with the power of this system.

This year HP gave its Pavilion line of entertainment notebooks a makeover with an attractive brushed aluminum exterior that seems quite durable. They are not as finger-print attractive as the former plastic cases either.

Don’t expect great battery life from the 6-cell 55WHr Li-ion battery, and it is not the smallest computer at five and a half pounds.

Just because an online store says something’s a great price on Cyber Monday doesn’t mean its true. For example, TigerDirect is selling Call of Duty:Black Ops for $59.99 after a $10 discount through Cyber Monday. The big problem with this deal is that Call of Duty: Black Ops has an MSRP of $59.99 and other retailers, such as Amazon are offering modest discounts on the game.Gamestop isn’t bothering to discount Black op Since it’s a new release and one of the hottest games out there, the retailers aren’t in a rush to slash the price.

Another, and more sinister, rip off to be aware of is the outright bait and switch on high-end items, such as DSLR cameras. High end cameras, such as the Nikon D90 and D700, are rarely sold at deep discounts. If you see these cameras for half off at an online retailer you’ve never heard of run away. There are several scamsters that will advertise a $1,000 camera for $400. When you call to order the camera, they’ll tell you that the price was for a grey market camera (from overseas w/o a warranty), but it’s not available any more. They’ll then give you a song and dance about how the U.S. version is available for a little more. If you take them up on teh offer, they’ll then try and pile on hundreds of dollars worth of nearly worthless accessories (off-brand tripods, bags, memory cards, etc.). If you refuse all of the accessories and the extended warranty they’ll simply cancel your order or tell you that they just sold the last unit of the camera you want.

We’re not going to name an of the scamsters here in this article as we don’t want to drive any visitors their way, but if you see a camera that costs $999 at Wal-mart, B&H Photo, Ritz Camera and other reputable dealers advertised for $400-$500 elsewhere it’s probably a scam.

Another tactic retailers use to make you think you’re getting a better deal than you really are on Cyber Monday is to compare the deal price to what the price used to be. “Now $299, was $599!,” exclaim some Cyber Monday promos. While 50% off might sound like a fantastic deal, you should be aware of what this actually means. Many retailers are comparing their Cyber Monday prices to the manufacturer’s suggested retail price, not the retailer’s most recent price. Gadgets’ prices often plummet within weeks of being announced. That gadget with a $599 MSRP may sell for $499 or $399 on a regular basis as retailers compete for customers. The $299 price you see advertised is still a great deal, but it’s only  a savings of $100 to $200, not the $300 you may be lead to believe.
