HP introduced the Pavilion tx2500z last week in Berlin at its Connecting our World conference. Kevin Wentzel explains the improvements and explains why the tx2500z could be an ideal notebook for students.

The tx2500z has about twice the graphics performance compared to the tx2000z thanks to the addtion of an ATI HD3200 GPU. The tx2500z gets AMD’s Turion Ultra processors for a speed bump all around. This means most video games will be playable on the tx2500z.

The tx2500z is powerful enough to be a primary notebook and offers the flexibility of tablet computing at a reasonable price. The tx2500z’s touchscreen display swivels 180 degrees and lays flat into tablet mode.

If you find a 12.1-inch notebook to small to work on for long stretches you can invest in the new HP xb4 docking station, which connects to the tx2500z with a single cable. The xb4 is absolutely packed with features, including speakers and a slot for a hard drive.

Dell’s jumping into the Tablet PC market later this year. The convertible notebook will feature a touchscreen and be one of the thinest and lightest on the market, according to Jeff Clarke, a senior vice president at Dell.

The new Dell tablet will be part of the Latitude line of business notebooks and will be sold to the corporate, health care and educational markets.

ThinkPad X61 Notebook and Tablet Refresh

Lenovo’s getting ready to give the X60 notebook and X60 tablet some Santa Rosa love. According to some internal docs, the new X61 models will run on Intel Core 2 Duo processors, Intel GMA X3100 graphics and have draft 802.11n wireless connectivity.

The X61 Tablet will feature Intel Core 2 Duo 7500 LV processors while the notebook will use Intel Core 2 Duo 7300 processors. Hard drives spinning at 5400 RPM will be available with capacities up to 160GB, while 7200 RPM drives will range up to 100GB.

The X61 series will be officially announced at the end of May.

HP announced the Compaq 2710p notebook, a convertible tablet that can be configured with up to three batteries. The optional expansion base features a DVD-RW drive and various ports. A second battery can be sandwiched between the base of the tablet and the expansion base, for all-day computing.

ASUS R1F First MS Vista x86 Premium Certified Notebook

The ASUS R1F tablet PC is the world’s first notebook to receive Microsoft’s Vista x86 Premium logo that brings new computing and digital entertainment possibilities with the new Vista operating system.
“We are happy to congratulate ASUS for being the world’s first WHQL certified notebook maker,” said Thomas Li, the Sr. Director Microsoft’s OEM department in Taiwan. ”
The R1F Tablet PC’s widescreen rotates 180-degrees and features a built-in web cam that rotates 240-degrees. The business notebook also has several data privacy and security features, including a fingerprint scanner -one of the few things that doesn’t rotate on the RF1.

Fujitsu T4215 Convertible Goes Core 2 Duo

Fujitsu refreshed its 12.1-inch convertible with Core 2 Duo processors. The 4.3 pound LifeBook T4215 is the lightest convertible notebook with a modular bay. Three different 12.1-inch touch screens are available, including an indoor/outdoor screen with 16–degree viewing angle. You can order a dual-layer DVD writer or extra battery to pop in the bay for a few more dollars. The notebook can be ordered with up to 120GB of storage and 2GB RAM. The LifeBook T4215 starts at $1,799, with add-ons pushing the price just north of $3,000.Fujitsu is throwing in a Creative MP3 player with all notebook purchases.
