A couple of notebook computer news outlets have been able to get their hands on the new Acer Aspire One D255, a netbook that is powered by the new 1.5GHz dual-core Atom N550 processor and dual-booting Windows 7 Starter and the Android 1.6 operating system.

Laptop Magazine said The Acer AOD255 is very ordinary looking netbook with a glossy black lid, a chiclet style keyboard, tiny touchpad that is barely distinguishable to the eye from the rest of the palm rest and a single mouse button. While there’s nothing new on outside; it’s what’s on the inside that sets the D255 apart in the crowded netbook marketplace.

The Aspire One D255 boots into Windows 7 Starter by default and there is an icon on the desktop that gives the user access to the configuration manager for Android. After booting into Android, Laptop Mag’s first impressions were not good; due in big part to the lack of apps and no access to the Android marketplace.

The folks at Netbooknews, offered a few more details on the D255′s specs. It comes with Intel GMA 3150 integrated graphics, 1GB of DDR3 Ram and a 250GB hard drive as well as Bluetooth. A 6-cell battery will power the D255 and while there is no official word on how long, Sascha Pallenberg of Netbooknews, estimates that the netbook should get about 5 hours (see video below).

Chippy of Carrypad also tweeted a few details of their tests of the D255 telling followers that according to his tests, the AOD255 is about middle of the pack when it comes to netbooks; adding that it will handle 720p video from Youtube.

Here is Sascha Pallenberg’s hands on video from Intel Developers Conference in San Francisco.

Most netbooks are seen as simple, ordinary and utilitarian. They get the job done while exciting few. Only their size gets attention, kind of like a Chevette gets noticed among the Corvettes. But Acer wants to change that with a pair of stylish new netbooks being released this month. They were already announced, but now we know their price and availability. The Acer Aspire One AOD260 and the Acer Aspire One AO533 have some very attractive prices and designs even if their specs are somewhat ordinary.

Both of Acer’s new netbooks feature a 10.1-inch backlit LED display with a 1024×600 resolution. In addition they will both have a built-in webcam, Wi-Fi and Ethernet, and a Multi-Gesture touchpad. Their keyboards are each 93% the size of a standard keyboard. They do have some things that will differentiate the two lines from each other besides price.

The Acer Aspire One AOD260

Acer Aspire One AOD260

The Acer Aspire One AOD260 is an update of the D250 released last year. Acer says it is designed for the user who … cares about style as much as performance … designed as a fashion accessory.” The cover has a patterned design that is smooth to the touch. Even the logo styled with looks in mind. Buyers will have an option of four unique colors black, charcoal, pink and purple. The sleekly designed chassis is only 2.43-2.76 lbs. depending on which battery you choose. It is only an inch thick.

But it is what’s on the inside that many users are concerned about. That is where both of these are pretty common.

The AOD260 will ship with an Intel Atom N450 processor and starting at a gigabyte of RAM and 250 GB of hard drive space to make it a useful netbook for most basic computing tasks. To satisfy your video needs the 260 has an Intel GMA 3150 graphics chip.

The original announcement said that Acer would offer an option that included a dual booting between Android and Windows 7. But the recent announcement doesn’t even mention it, so we will have to wait to see if they have scraped this choice.

Acer Aspire One AO533

The other netbook included in this announcement is the Acer Aspire One AO533. It has a faster Intel Atom N475 processor inside the 10.1-inch chassis. It’s distinguishing feature is the 6-cell Li-ion battery giving it up to 8 hours of life. It also has a gigabyte of DDR3 memory to go along with the 250GB.

The AO533 will also have some flair with it’s glossy red, black or white finish and chrome rim and logo. The long life battery won’t sick out, like may larger batteries do.

Below is a video of the 533 from Netbooked.

Pricing and Availability

The Acer Aspire One AOD260 will start at just $298. The AO533 is just a little more at $329.99. These fashionable head turners will be available for you to pick up and take a turn on the catwalk by the end of the month.

OfficeDepot is joining the Black Friday deal race and will be selling the Acer Aspire One D250-1165 for $199. This configuration of the Acer Aspire One comes with an energy saving 1.6GHz Intel Atom N270 processor, 1GB of RAM and a 160GB hard drive. The Aspire One D250-1165 netbook normally costs $299 at Offic Depot. The Acer Aspire One weighs less than three pounds, making it easy to bring it anywhere. It’s hard to beat this deal if you’re looking for an affordable netbook.

As with all netbooks, the Aspire One D250-1165 does have limitations buyers should be aware of. The system is relatively slow compared to mainstream notebook PCs. This means it should not be used for multimedia editing. It can have trouble playing back full-screen videos on popular sites such as Hulu. Also, if you need to use CDs or DVDs you’ll need to attach an external optical drive, which is not included with in the box.

Office depot will have limited quantities of the Acer Aspire One D250-1165 at each of its stores so plan on shopping early if you want one of these.

Acer introduced a new Aspire One today that features an 11.6″ display. It comes with a 160GB hard drive, Intel Atom processor and a six-cell battery that’s good for up to eight hours. The Acer Aspire One 11.6″ supports Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and 3G connections to keep you connected on the go.

An 11.6″ screen makes this Aspire One more appealing for users who need a netbook they can use for hours on end without straining their eyes. Of course, the larger screen means its not as portable as 9″ and 10″ netbooks.

The Aspire One 11.6″ will be available in red, black, blue and white.

Mark Spoonauer of Laptop Mag posted a video tour of the Acer Aspire One 11.6 at an Acer press event in New York.

Press release from Acer:

A New Way to Say Netbook

Acer to announce the new Aspire One 11,6”

Born as a niche phenomenon, the netbook has been dispersed throughout the world, and with Gartner reviews estimating an increase in sales for 2009 that will mean 21 million units distributed sold at a global level (with a more cautious prediction 8 millions made 6 months ago).

Netbooks represent a fully strategic category of products that complete Acer’s mobility products, which have always been the core of the business.

Acer has taken care of every detail, from winning design to personalized interface and diversification of connection options. All these combined elements have allowed the Aspire One to be the most sold netbook on the market.

Being always-connected anywhere represents a diffused trend in the habits of the end-user. Younger generations seek a tool that allows them to communicate with instant messaging or to always be connected to their social networks. Professionals want a device that unites connectivity with mobility, a second or third computer to always carry with them be able to enjoy multimedia contents, internet or e-mail in every instant.

Today, Acer is taking on different dimensions: A new extended family, custom made for all. Where a variety of people in different stages of their life can gain satisfaction in the way they choose to communicate. Acer’s strategy winning is to enrich it’s product proposition to multiply affinity between user and their product.

Design therefore becomes a fundamental element for transmitting this world of ideas and meanings that it is connected to.

Today, Acer extends this family with an all-new the new 11.6” format.

Besides offering full connectivity, the new line is characterized for its defined style. Available in four glossy colors – white, dark blue, red and black its design aspects do not go unobserved. Thin and aerodynamics, the new Acer netbooks evoke speed and mobility, underlining the ability to surpass the boundaries of space and time and to experience connectivity anywhere in full freedom.

The 11.6” Aspire One is equipped with an Intel® Atomâ„¢ processor and Mobile Intel® US15W Express Chipset. Notwithstanding the small size, the 11.6” Aspire One features a large 160 GB internal hard drive and a multi-in-one card reader.

Thickness reduced to one inch (only 2.5 cm), it’s made for portability. The integration of WiFi 802.11b/g and Acer Signal Up technology allows easy access to available wireless networks, while Bluetooth connectivity and 3G guarantees even greater freedom: connection at 360 degrees, full control of the online experience, without limits on time and space.

This way, there are no limits to social interaction online, if not for those of the imagination. Acer developed the Aspire One 11,6 inch following a very clear point: by observing the daily life and the formal procedures of end users, and to combine them into special experience.

Elegant details, like the hinges of the screen and the aerodynamic metal shape with a drop of color inside or the activation switch on immersed in color that contrast with the surface texture, capture attention.

In the 11.6 inch versions, the attention to detail is extreme: the keyboard is ‘soft-touch’, to increase typing conform and give a pleasant feeling while chatting on-line with the friends. Dolby Pro Logic® sound and high-definition WXGA screen WXGA back-lit LED screen simulate the most advanced multimedia entertainment station; the extreme slimness, reduced to 2.5 cm of thickness, weighing just a little more than one kilo and with an 8 hours based on 6 cell 5200 mAh battery make the Aspire One easy to take with you, always.

Furthermore, there is a digital microphone and Acer Crystal Eye a webcam built into the frame: a small window to the world, to maintain the contacts by means of real-time video streaming, video chat and conference calling.

To make these netbooks thinner and to improve portability, the VGA and LAN doors were placed in the back angles of casing for comfortable access to cable management. Portal icons were printed on the borders to identify them more easily and to make them visible even when the cover is closed. One last practical detail: the touchpad is ‘multi-gesture’, allowing you to leaf through pages in the same manner as of a newspaper and allowing you to zoom with just a touch.
