The Dell Adamo was a thin ultra-portable competitor to Apple’s MacBook Air that has been discounted several times over the past months and was recently phased out. It appears that Dell isn’t leaving the ultraportable laptop market, but instead planning a MacBook Air competitor.

CNet report that Dell is working on a new model that will be released sometime in the next six months. It will not be under the Adamo name, but will just be added to one of Dell’s already existing lineups, like the XPS.

There is little info yet on specs or pricing. But it will likely be in line with the MacBook Air, now the standard for light, ultra-portable notebooks. The lowest priced Macbook Air is $999 for an 11″ model with a 64GB SSD and 2GB of RAM and only an Intel Core 2 Duo processor. With the release of next generation processor and graphics chips from both AMD and Intel, we can bet the successor to the Adamo will likely have a little more oomph in the processor spec than the Air at a lower price.

Unfortunately for Dell, it appears Apple is going to be upgrading the Air already with the new Sandy Bridge platform from Intel.

Dell is putting an end to the Dell Adamo notebook, and the Adamo brand according to a report from CNet. The Dell Adamo made big waves when it was announced due to a slim and sexy look that we hadn’t seen in consumer laptops, aside from Apple, at the time.

While the Adamo caught attention for the slim form factor, 13.4″ high resolution screen, built in mobile broadband and light weight it has had trouble competing with the recent explosion of consumer ultraportable notebooks, including the new MacBook Air models which are lighter and have an even higher resolution display.

Dell has been clearing out the stock of Dell Adamo notebooks for the past few months, with discounts coming in stages, all the way down to $799 for the base model Adamo. Today, if you try to look for the Dell Adamo, or any Adamo product at Dell, you’ll get redirected to the main Dell page, as if the slick notebook never existed.

If you want the looks of the Dell Adamo, check out Dell Small Business which offers the Dell Vostro V13 ultrathin notebook which is much cheaper, and currently on sale for $399.

Dell has dropped the price on the 13″ Dell Adamo to $899, a move likely made to compete with the recently refreshed MacBook Air.

The Dell Adamo is powered by an Intel Core 2 Duo is a 2.13GHz processor and has 4GB of RAM. Comparatively, the the 13.3″ MacBook Air has an entry level price of $1,299 with a 1.86GHz processor and 2GB of RAM.

Just like the MacBook Air, there is a 128GB SSD in the Dell Adamo which runs Windows 7 64-bit edition. This is a bump in processor speed and memory. The new lower-priced Adamo still has a built-in 3G network and a 6-cell battery which promises up to 5 hours of battery life.

For Windows users these specs offer a decent alternative to the MacBook Air. Some Air users would be envious of the built-in wireless broadband and the slightly faster processor, not to mention the price break. A MacBook Air with a 2.13GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor plus 4GB of RAM will actually cost $1,799. However, it would have a 256GB SSD since the 128GB version of the MacBook Air is not available with the faster 2.13GHz processor.

This is actually the second time Dell dropped the price of the Dell Adamo this year and is worth looking into if you are a Windows user who wants an incredibly thin laptop at an affordable price.

If you’ve been lusting after the Dell Adamo; but can’t give up a few month’s rent for a super thin computer then perhaps you should look at the new Dell Vostro V13 a thin and light notebook from Dell’s Small Business line.

Gizmodo had some hands on time with the super thin V13 and despite its compromises, which err on the side of design instead of power, found it to be the notebook that Bruce Wayne would carry — that is assuming the Adamo is Batman’s laptop and Bruce sprung for the $600 version of the Vostro V13 that has Windows 7 and a ULV Core 2 Duo processor.

Even with its non removable 4 hour 42 minute battery and so-so starting specs the Dell Vostro V13 looks pretty and, for the price, will likely attract budget buyers who want a cheap portable notebook.

The Dell Vostro V13 is available in the Dell Small Business store. It starts at $450 with a Celeron processor and Ubuntu and can be upgraded to a ULV Core 2 Duo processor for better performance and Windows 7 for $650.

The Dell Adamo XPS is the world’s thinnest notebook. It’s 9.99mm thick, which means it’s even trimmer than an iPhone. It will be available this month for $1,799 from Dell.com and at select retailers. There’s definitely a steep price premium here, but If you want to turn heads and impress your friends this notebook will do the trick.

The Dell Adamo XPS doesn’t have a traditional clamshell design. Instead, the keyboard flips down from the display. It’s components include a 1.4GHz ULV Intel processor, 4GB of RAM and a 128GB SSD. It comes with a battery that’s rated to last two hours and 30 minutes, which won’t be nearly enough for many users. A thicker battery will be available that is rated to last up to five hours and 17 minutes.

Here’s a video that demonstrates how thin the Adamo XPS actually is compared to an iPhone and the Envy 13. Keep in mind that the Envy 13 is actually a very thin notebook itself.

One of our readers asked us to compare the Dell Adamo XPS to the size of a quarter. It’s much thinner than a quarter placed on edge and about as thick as six stacked quarters.

Our friends over at Gizmodo snagged a photo of the Dell Adamo XPS. As we mentioned in an earlier blog post, this thing is extremely thin.

As you can see in the photo, the Adamo XPS is much thinner than any other notebook on the market. It measures just 9.99 mm at its thickest point, which is just over half as thick as the MacBook Air.

Unfortunately, Dell didn’t open up the Adamo XPS for press photos, but this shot is a heck of a lot more than the company showed on this concept notebook’s micro site.

I first got a chance to see the Adamo XPS a couple of months ago, but wasn’t allowed to capture on camera. Unlike most notebooks, the top half has much more mass than the bottom half. The keyboard flips downwards, about 110-degrees. This means the back edge of the Adamo XPS display and the front edge of the keyboard become the resting points when placed on a desk.

The Adamo XPS looks like a notebook from the future and would be at the top of my shopping list if it had decent power and battery life. I’m not sure where the battery is placed, but it’s obviously small.

Keep in mind that the Adamo XPS is just a proof of concept. While the unit was fully functional, Dell may never bring it to market.

I got my hands on Dell’s Adamo, which is world’s thinnest notebook and the most stylish Dell I’ve ever seen. It is a beautiful piece of machinery and something I’d like to own.

Adamo is Dell’s new luxury label and while it’s made by Dell, it has nothing in common with other notebooks sold by the company.

Dell’s definitely scored some points in my book with this notebook. I’m not crazy about the AdamoByDell.com site or overall marketing image, but then again I’m not in this product’s target demographic.

It’s unfortunate that it’s being released in the midst of a global recession as computer buyers are flocking to cheaper notebooks and netbooks.

Here’s a quick video I shot today of myself unboxing the Adamo.

My initial thoughts after playing with the Adamo:

Pros

Beautiful Design- It will definitely turn heads and the attention to detail is stunning.

Thin- The lower half of the notebook is almost as thin as an iPhone.

Luxurious- It just feels good to use. Excellent finishes.

No Stickers- It’s minor, but it really improves the out-of-box experience

Backlit keyboard- Looks really good in the dark and feels comfortable to use.

AC Adapter- Nice, customized power adapter that’s thin and has built-in prongs. You can ditch the long cord behind.

Cons

Performance/Value Ratio- With the Adamo you’re paying for style and thinness, not performance.

Display- The test unit I played with had a lot of light leaking out of its edges and ripples when I touched the lid while it was powered on. Not sure if the unit I saw was pre-production or not though.

Price- Yes, some users will pay a steep premium for aesthetics, but the $1,999 starting point will keep most consumers away from experiencing the best of what Dell has to offer. If want all the extras you’ll have to pay about $3,000.

Ports-All of the ports are on the back of the Adamo, which will make plugging in the AC adapter and peripherals a pain.

The Dell Adamo is now available for pre-order at AdamoByDell.com. The Adamo is Dell’s most stylish notebook to date and it is sure to turn heads. The Dell Adamo is now the world’s thinnest notebook available, measuring .65 of an inch thick. The Adamo’s display measures 13.4-inches diagonally and has a 16:9 aspect ration. Its battery is rated to last for a maximum of 5 hours.

The $1,999 version of the Adamo comes with 2GB of RAM, a 128GB SSD and a 1.2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor. For $2,699 you’ll get an integrated AT&T 3G WWAN card, 4GB of RAM and a 1.4GHz processor.

The Adamo notebook will ship with Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit.

The Adamo comes with a lot more ports and adapters than other ultra-thin notebooks, such as the MacBook Air and Voodoo Envy. The new Dell has two USB ports, a DisplayPor and a combo eSATA/USB port. DisplayPort to HDMI, DVI, and VGA adapters are included so you’ll be able to connect to any external monitor you want.

Adamo buyers will get to choose between Onyx and Pearl finishes. Dell’s shipping the Adamo in a clear case so you can see your pretty purchase before you even open the box.

There’s no question that this is a sharp looking notebook, but the premium price tag is going to be a tough sell in this economy. The Adamo will appeal to the fashion-conscious, but other vendors have had challenges selling thin notebooks in this price range for full price. The Voodoo Envy 133, MacBook Air and the ThinkPad X300 have all had their prices slashed since their debut. I’m willing to bet that the entry-level Adamo will be available for about $1,700 within a few months.

* A stylish worldwide print campaign shot by acclaimed British-based photographer Nadav Kandar and featuring high-fashion models that reinforces the “fall in love” positioning. Kander, whose work is celebrated in galleries worldwide, also shot the moving portfolio, “Obama’s People,” which appeared in The New York Times Magazine earlier this year.

* AdamoByDell.com, the centerpiece of the campaign and a highly stylized site where viewers can learn about Adamo, register for updates and, beginning today, place orders.

Dell’s teasing us with a video of its upcoming Adamo notebook. The video and AdamoByDell.com are all about style and aesthetics, complete with mood music and a high-fashion model.

The video starts with the Adamo notebook components floating in a factory, then shows two robots laser-cutting the chassis and assembling the components.

This notebook looks amazing and some of its design features will trickle down to other Dell notebooks in the coming months.

Dell’s Alex Gruzen blogged:

Adamo is not only the pinnacle of design and craftsmanship, but it is also the laboratory and inspiration for design ideas that will flow through the rest of Dell’s consumer product portfolio in the future.
