Up until now, the HP Pavilion dv6t only had a 1366 x 768 resolution for the 15.6″ display and the Pavilion dv7t only had a 1600 x 900 resolution. Commonly these resolutions are referred to as 720P and 900P respectively. The new 1920 x 1080 resolution, known as 1080P, allows you to see more on the screen at the same time.

If you had a 15.6″ HP Pavilion dv6t with a 1920 x 1080 display next to the HP Pavilion dv7t with a 1600 x 900 resolution screen you would still be able to fit more on the smaller screen because of the higher resolution. Up until recently many consumers had not paid much attention to screen resolution, but as we begin to multitask more and more, it is becoming a bigger deal.

It is also something that movie buffs may appreciate, even though we’d be hard pressed to tell the difference between a movie played back in 720P and 1080P on such a small screen.

The 1080P High Definition display option is currently only available on the HP Pavilion dv6t Quad Edition and Pavilion dv7t Quad Edition notebooks and adds $150 to your system cost. In our opinion, if you work in multiple windows this upgrade is well worth it. If only HP offered a higher resolution display on the high end HP Envy 14.

Intel Wireless Display 2.0 was first announced at CES 2011 and is already in a number of notebooks like the soon to be available Toshiba Satellite E305 Blue Label notebook. These Intel WiDi 2.0 notebooks will get the upgrade to Intel Wireless Display 2.1 next month which will enable the new features.

Intel Wireless Display 2.1 New Features:

• 1080P support – Fulll HD 1080P support has been available since Wireless Display 2.0 arrived on the market, but it is a significant increase from the previous limit of 720P.
• Surround Sound – The new WiDi 2.1 service allows you to stream in 5.1 surround so that you don’t have to make a sacrifice in sound quality while streaming.
• Protected Content Playback – Perhaps one of the nicest upgrades is the ability to play content from DVDs and Blu-Ray discs so that you can enjoy more 1080P HD content.
• Full HD Content Rentals and Purchases – Intel is partnering with Best Buy and others to deliver 1080P rentals and purchases which you can stream right to the big screen.
• Reduced Lag – The new Intel WiDi streaming has less lag than WiDi 1.0. Intel says it has decreased from 600ms to 150-170ms for a nicer experience. Still not something you’ll likely want to game on, but a welcome improvement.

If you have a laptop with Intel Wireless Display 2.0, like the Toshiba Satellite E305, Sony VAIO Blue Label notebook, Dell 2nd Gen Core i powered Inspiron 14", 15" and 17" notebooks; you will be able to upgrade to Wireless Display 2.1.

In order to use Intel Wireless Display 2.0 and 2.1, you will need a Wireless Display 2.0 adapter which retails for around $100. The Blue Label notebooks which will be available at Best Buy soon will include an adapter for the price.

Overall this looks really cool and we are hoping to get one of the new adapters in soon to test with the Toshiba Satellite E305-S1990 which we have in for review.

Intel Wireless Display 2.1 Demo from Laptop Mag

Though many other Blu-Ray drives require a separate power brick, the Plextor PX-B120U is USB powered, making it perfect for on-the-go use. However, you will need a computer that is capable of handling 1080p HD video playback. This rules out most ultra-portable netbooks, as many use integrated graphics instead of discrete options from NVIDIA and ATI.

Don’t have a HDMI port? No problem. Aside from just being powered by USB, the audio and video is transmitted via USB as well. This cuts down the need to worry about bringing additional cables along with you. The PX-B120U also upscales your DVD collection, providing a picture that is near HD quality.

One major drawback is the fact that this Blu-Ray drive is read only. Those of you who were hoping for a portable Blu-Ray drive capable of burning Blu-Ray drives should look elsewhere.  Regardless, $99.99 is a pretty decent price for a portable Blu-Ray drive. The netbook on the left is running an Intel Atom processor with integrated Intel graphics. The LCD on the right is connected to the NVIDIA Ion computer, which also has an INtel Atom processor. Unlike current netbooks, the Ion design features a GeForce 9400M processor.

As you can see for yourself, the NVIDIA Ion platform makes Intel’s integrated graphics look kinda pathetic. Notice how smooth the Belagio water spouts are on the LCD compared to the netbook.

Not only can you watch movies on NVIDIA Ion netbooks, but you can output that video via HDMI, DVI, DisplayPort or VGA onto a display with a resolutoin up to 2560×1600.

Of course, graphics performance isn’t a priority for everyone, but if want to do more than email and web browsing on a netbook, you might want to wait for the release of Ion netbooks.

We expect to see the first NVIDIA Ion netbook in the second quarter of 2009.
