Xmarks can sync your bookmarks to the web, to other computers and even to a different browser on another computer.

This tutorial will show how to install Xmarks on your computer and sync the bookmarks to a different computer. Xmarks will also help you to keep your passwords synchronized and backed up across multiple browsers or computers. Backing up your usernames and passwords is optional.

How to install Xmarks on Firefox:

Step 1: Head over to Xmarks.

Step 2: Click the “Install Now” button.

Step 3: It will take you to page to install the add-on based on the browser which you are using. In my case it took me to Firefox add-on installation page as I am using Firefox for this tutorial.

Step 4: Click on Download Xmarks and follow the instruction to install it in your browser.

Step 5: Click the allow button to install the Xmarks add-on to Firefox.

Step 6: Click the “Install Now” button.

Step 7: The Xmarks add-on will install.

Step 8: Restart the Firefox to complete the installation of the Xmarks add-on.

Step 9: After restarting the Firefox you should see the add-on install confirmation shown below.

Step 10: Close the confirmation add-on window.

Step 11: After closing the confirmation window you should see the Xmarks log in window, shown below.

Step 12: If you don’t see log in window then click on Xmarks icon on bottom right corner of your Firefox; it will open the Xmarks setup wizard.

Step 13: Create an account on Xmarks. If you already have account with Xmarks then click on “Sign In” at the bottom of the window. See below screen shot.

Step 14: Fill in all required fields and click on create account.

Step 15: Xmarks will ask your confirmation if you also want to sync your passwords. If you want to synchronize your passwords then select yes and click “Next”. If you don’t want to sync your passwords just click “Next”

Step 16: Xmarks will ask if you want to sync open tabs across multiple browsers. Click on next tab.

Step 17: Click “Next” to start synchronizing your bookmarks.

Step 18: Xmarks will start the syncing process. As part of this process it will upload your Firefox bookmarks to the Xmarks server.

Step 19: Click “Finish” to complete the installation and setup of Xmarks.

Step 20: This will create your Xmarks account, now you just need to go to your email account and confirm your account with Xmarks. From now on, Xmarks will automatically keep the bookmarks synchronized for this browser.

How to manage bookmarks on the web:

Now that you have created an Xmarks account and synced your bookmarks to the Xmarks server you can see and manage your bookmarks from the web. Follow the steps below to see and manage your bookmarks.

Step A: log into my.xmarks.com with your Xmarks user id and password.

Step B: You should be able to see and manage all your bookmarks from any computer.

How to sync or merge your bookmarks with another browser or computer: After creating an account on Xmarks and storing your bookmarks on their server, you can synchronize your bookmarks across all browsers on the same computer or with different computers.  Please follow below guide to synchronized bookmarks.

Step A: Open any browser on a different computer and go to Xmarks.com.

Step B: Click the “Install Now” button and follow the instructions which will be similar to steps 2 to 7 from the first section. When it comes time to sign in or log in resume below.

Step C: Select ‘Yes: Log me in’ and click on next. See below screen shot.

Step D: Type your user name and password and click on next button.

Step E: Click the “Sync” button if you want to merge your bookmarks, starting with your server bookmarks.

Step F: If you don’t want to merge your bookmarks, but would rather copy your Xmarks bookmarks into the browser then click on “Change Sync Settings” and follow the on screen instructions.

Step G: Select how you want Xmarks to sync your bookmarks.

Step H: Xmarks will sync bookmarks to your new browser or computer.

Please note that we used Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome as an example, but the Xmarks add-on works on IE, Firefox, Chrome and Safari. You can use any of them to store your bookmarks on the Xmarks server or to sync them across two different browsers.

How to install and configure Tor on Windows:

Step 1:  Download Vidalia bundle for windows operating system from the Torproject site.

Step 2: Double click on the installation file and start installation.

Step 3: Select the installation language and click on OK.

Step 4: Vidalia bundle setup wizard window will popup, click the next button.

Step 5: Choose the component from Vidalia bundle which you want to install; If you don’t know what you want, then the default settings are fine. Click next.

Step 6: Select the install location.

Step 7: While installing Vidalia the Torbutton add-on will also install on Mozilla Firefox.

Step 8: Once Torbutton is successfully installed on Mozilla Firefox you will have to restart Firefox and the Torbutton add-on will appear on Mozilla Firefox bottom right corner.

Step 9: Click the Finish button once installation is complete.

Step 10: Once the Vidalia installation is successful. Vidalia GUI will automatically start.

Step 11: Vidalia GUI will show you whether you are connected to TOR network or not.

Step 12: You can stop Tor network by clicking on stop Tor.

Step 13: Make sure Tor is working. Below screen shot show when Tor is disabled on Firefox.

Step 14: Enabled the Tor by clicking on Torbutton on bottom right corner of Firefox.

Step 15: Now go to Google and you can see in below screen shot that your Google page was changed. You can see that Tor is working and now you have hidden your IP address successfully.

If you have financial files or other personal documents that you need to keep private then you should look at encrypting and password protecting a folder on your computer. This is especially important if you share your notebook with friends or family on occasion and don’t want your information or files to be out there for all to see. The problem could be even worse if your laptop is stolen or lost. It’s always better to prepared, than to be worried about your sensitive information later.

You can use TrueCrypt to create encrypted folder on your PC. With a TrueCrypt encrypted folder if your laptop is stolen, lost or you give someone to use it for a while you don’t need to get worry about your sensitive information being viewed. When you encrypt a folder the person using our PC won’t know what’s inside the folder and cracking TrueCrypt encryptions is a difficult and lengthy process that most laptop thieves or users won’t be familiar with.

TrueCrypt is open-source disk encryption software for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux. TrueCrypt works on Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7. TrueCrypt is very powerful encryption software and provides a lot of functionality.

After creating an encrypted folder, drive or partition you can lock it down with a strong password. You can also combine the password with a key such as a file or image to make the password more difficult to crack. If you want, TrueCrypt can also generate the key to use along with password. You can store the keyfile on a thumbdrive or somewhere safe and unless you have both the keyfile and the password, you cannot open the folder.

If you want to take it a step further, TrueCrypt will let you create a hidden folder, partition or whole operating system that no one will know is there.

Here are some of features of TrueCrypt encryption software.

• Creates a virtual encrypted disk within a file and mounts it as a real disk.
• Can encrypt an entire partition or storage device such as USB flash drive or hard drive.
• It has two features, parallelization and pipelining, that can allow data to be read and written as fast as if the drive was not encrypted.
• Can encrypt a partition or drive where windows is installed (pre-boot authentication).
• Can create a hidden volume and a hidden operating system.
• Uses the AES-256, Serpent and Twofish encryption algorithms.

Today in my tutorial I am going to cover how to install TrueCrypt, create an encrypted volume and mount the encrypted volume on your PC. Creating a hidden partition or hidden operating system requires more work and additional knowledge so I will cover these topics in a separate post.

Please note that this tutorial shows how to install TrueCrypt and use it on a Windows machine, but it will be similar in other operating systems.

How to install TrueCrypt on Windows machine:

Step 1: Head over to TrueCrypt page and download the TrueCrypt .

Step 2: Right click on the installation file and click on ‘Run as administrator’.

Step 3: Check the license terms.

Step 4: Click the Accept button.

Step 5: Select the install option and click the Next button.

Step 6: Install to the default location. This does not need to be the location you are going to encrypt.

Step 7: Make sure that the ‘create system restore point’ option is checked. This is makes it possible to restore Windows to a previous state if anything goes wrong.

Step 8:  TrueCrypt will start the installation.

Step 9: A window will popup telling you that TrueCrypt has been successfully installed on your machine.

Step 10: Click the Finish button to complete the installation.

How to encrypt a folder:

Step 1: Start the TrueCrypt application and click on create volume.

Step 2:  Select the first option ‘create an encrypted file container’.

Step3: Click the Next button.

Step 4: Select the volume type ‘standard TrueCrypt volume’ and click the Next button.

Step 5: Select the volume location by clicking on ‘select file’.

Step 6: Browse to the location where you want to create the encrypted folder and name the folder.

Step 7: Click the Next button.

Step 8: On next window ‘Encryption options’, select the encryption algorithm from the drop down menu. All of the encryption options in TrueCrypt are good and provide a challenge to an individual trying to access your files.

Step 9: After selecting the encryption option you can test it by clicking the Test button.

Step 10: Click the Next button.

Step 11: Specify the volume size for the encrypted folder and click on Next.

Step 12: Type the password of your choice in password field. This password will be used as decrypting the encrypted folder. Choose strong password which is difficult for others to guess, but one that you won’t forget.

Step 13: You can also combine the password with keyfiles. A keyfile could be an image, mp3 or other document that becomes part of the key to decrypt the folder. Make sure you backup your keyfiles since any change to the file will cause it to stop working with TrueCrypt to open your encrypted folder.

Step 14: Browse to the files which you want to be a keyfile and select them. Press the OK button.

Step 15: You can also create the keyfile from TrueCrypt by clicking on Generate random key button. This generated keyfile can be used as single keyfile or combination with other files.

Step 16: When you are done entering your password and selecting  keyfiles, click the Next button.

Step 17: TrueCrypt will format the volume before encrypting. Select the file system from drop down menu.

Step 18: Click the format button and TrueCrypt will format the encrypted folder.

Step 19: After the format completes, a window will pop up informing you that TrueCrypt volume has been successfully created.

Step 20: Click the Exit button unless you want to create another encrypted folder.

How to mount the encrypted folder:

Step 1: Start the TrueCrypt application and select an unused drive letter from the TrueCrypt drive letter option. Make sure the drive letter is not in use on your PC.

Step 2: Click on select file to select the encrypted file which you want to mount.

Step 3: Browse to the location where encrypted folder you just created is and select that folder.

Step 4: Click the mount button.

Step 5: Enter the password and click on keyfiles if you also used a keyfile to secure the folder.

Step 6: This step is optional and need to use only if you have a keyfile. Click on add files and add all keyfiles you used in encrypting the folder.

Step 7: Press the OK button.

Step 8: If password and key files are correct then TrueCrypt will mount the encrypted folder as a new drive on your computer.

Step 9: Now you can use this encrypted drive just like a normal drive and it will show up under My Computer.

Step 10: To unmount the drive select the drive in TrueCrypt window and click on ‘Dismount all’ and it will no longer show up in My Computer or be mounted as a hard drive.

When you are done using the encrypted folder, and wish to make it secure again, you should unmount it otherwise anyone with access to your computer will be able to view the contents.

Step 3:  Run the application and give the Gmail username which you want to backup SMS to.

Step 4: Configure your Gmail account under the Menu option.

Step 5: Choose login in the Menu to enable the SMS folders dropdown with all your SMS folders.

Step 6: Select the SMS folder which you want to take backup.

Step 7: Now go to Menu -> ‘Sync SMS folder’. It will start the message conversion to mail format and show the progress.

Step 8: After the text messages have been converted to mail format you will be asked if you want to sync.

Step 9: Syncing will send emails with subject IMAPSMS|<folder name>: sender, and the body will contain message and time.

Step 10: You may want to set up a filter in Gmail to label and store these messages so that your inbox is not cluttered with text messages.

Setting and Scheduling:

Step 1: Open the app.

Step 2: Menu->Login

Step 3: Select the Gmail account

Step 4: Select the folder you want to sync messages from

Step 5: Menu->Schedule->Set the time

Step 6: Click Set, if successful, SMSSyncUp will show the scheduled time, otherwise it will give you an error.

Step 7: If you want to de-schedule it click de-schedule.

Step 8: Schedule will run the app at that time. Please note that sync will be successful only if you are connected to internet.

Step 9: Default limit of one time sync is 50 if you want to change it, after login select Menu->Message Limit and enter the number of messages u want to upload per sync.
