HP Chromebook 11 Pulled from Stores Due to Overheating Chargers

The well received HP Chromebook 11 was pulled from stores and online shops due to a problem where the charger over heats. Google and HP made the request saying that “a small number of user reports that some chargers included with the device have been damaged due to overheating.”

The HP Chromebook 11 runs on a brand new Intel Haswell dual-core processor and offers longer battery life than earlier Chromebooks. Buyers report great results with the computer and the device sold well even though users can’t install their own software on the notebook because it only runs web apps. We gave a positive review to the larger HP Chromebook 14 recently.

Users of the HP Chromebook 11 like the micro-USB charging system that comes with the notebook. It’s easy to find micro-USB cables, which makes finding replacement chargers inexpensive and convenient.

When people began to report problems with the chargers, this detracted from one of the key features differentiating the HP from other Chromebooks, like the Acer Chromebook C720, also a popular Hasell-based Chromebook.

According to a report at The Verge Best Buy will start to pull the notebook from shelves this week. Google Play no longer lists the computer after listing it as “out of inventory” yesterday. Amazon doesn’t even show it as available.

Hopefully HP will fix the problem and make the Chromebook 11 available soon. Until they do, buyers should consider the HP Chromebook 14 unless the 11-inch size appeals to them. In that case look at the Acer C720, an equally impressive alternative.

Customers who already bought the HP Chromebook 11 should stop using the charger that came with the notebook and get a generic micro-USB charger that comes with an Underwriters Laboratory stamp of approval. Most chargers that come with phones or tablets should work. They might not charge the HP as quickly as the included charger did, so stay patient until HP finds a fix and replaces the charger for customers.
