HP Updates Pavilion dm4 With Beats Audio and 2nd Gen Intel CPUs

Today HP announced that they’re refreshing their thin and light notebook, the 14-inch Pavilion dm4, with some new hardware inside. Now with second generation Intel Core i processors and AMD Radeon HD graphics, this portable powerhouse just got even more delicious.

Josh Smith is right that specs are dead, so I won’t bore you with a litany of them. After all, the real attraction for the dm4 has always been the outside. There hasn’t been a major design overhaul, which is good because I like the look. Well, nothing major except an all-black Beats Edition…

Just like the Envy before it, the dm4 gained the benefit of Beats Audio for superior output via the headphone jack. You can get Beats with the “normal” version of this notebook, but don’t you want to enjoy them while gazing on a beautiful black metal version of the machine with sweet glowing red accents?

And while Beats Audio will enhance any listening experience, listening to your tunes with the included Beats Solo headphones will make that experience even better.

For both editions HP kept the same keyboard, which offers decent tactile feedback and return. The touchpad was one of the only drawbacks to this system before. But in my short hands-on time with the unit I didn’t notice the same issues as before.

The dm4 is just 1.3-inches thick, tapering down to under an inch at the front. Since it weighs 4.5 pounds it’s not as ultra portable as it’s cousin the ultrabook, but it’s also not a huge pain to carry around. It’ll make a good laptop for people looking for a lightweight multimedia machine and, of course, students.
