Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Arrives May 17th: Struts Thin & Rugged Design (video)

Lenovo hasn’t officially announced the ThinkPad X1, but the company has now released a trailer for the upcoming ultrathin notebook that shows off the X1’s features and teases a May 17th arrival date.

While the ThinkPad X1 will be competing with the MacBook Air in terms of the thin-factor, the X1 will blow the MacBook Air out of the water in terms of durability and business rugged features. In the ThinkPad X1 promo video, which Lenovo is billing as a marriage of form and function, you can see the X1 subjected to abuse we wouldn’t want our MacBook Air anywhere near – including spilled water and a drop off the kitchen counter.

The ThinkPad X1 will be available on May 17th and we will be ready with a first look at the ThinkPad X1 very soon so that you know how the X1 stacks up to the MacBook Air in real life. The ThinkPad X1 has a 13.3″ Gorilla Glass display to prevent scratches and is military rated for ruggedness like drops and water spills.

The notebook has a backlit keyboard as well, which makes it the first ThinkPad with a backlit keyboard. Traditionally Lenovo has relied on a small light to cast a glow on the keys, but in practice it is not as good as backlit keys. We hope these keys will eventually make their way into the rest of the ThinkPad lineup.

Under the hood is expected to be a 2.5GHz Intel Core i5 Sandy Bridge processor, 8GB RAM and a 160GB SSD as well as an internal battery that is supposed to last 2.5 times as long as your typical ThinkPad and charge to 80% in a half hour.

The ThinkPad X1 is rumored to cost around $3,000 which is much higher than an entry level MacBook Air. We’ll see if the ThinkPad X1 can compare to the ultrathin Air in the coming weeks.
